BEAUFORT COUNTY, SC--A construction worker in the Low Country is missing and rescue crews are searching for him in the Combahee River on the Beaufort-Colleton county line. While construction crews continue to finish the Combahee Bridge project, rescue crews from numerous departments have been working down below, searching the river for a missing construction worker. He went missing last night after working on the bridge. "We've been patrolling the river in boats, we've had several officers, two DNR Boats up and down the river , so has the Colleton Sheriff's Department," said 1st Sgt. Ben Graham with South Carolina DNR . "Also the construction crew even had the first boat out looking as we were on the way." Although they've been working around the clock, they haven't found any sign of the missing man. According to authorities, he was last seen on a barge around 10:15pm. Then, 15 minutes later when they conducted a head count, he was nowhere to be found. "All we have is is last eye witness accounts, which could have been 15-30 minutes before he went missing," said Graham. While no one knows what really happened, authorities do know the man no longer has his safety equipment. "He had put his safety equipment on the barge and that was his last known action," said Graham. The DNR dive team tried to search the river down below, but the strong current today made those efforts impossible. Crews say they plan to do all they can to continue this search and rescue effort. The current did ease up and divers were able to search the river not too long ago, but DNR officials say they haven't found any signs of the missing worker. Man discovers missing construction worker's body Published Sun, Dec 2, 2007 ADVERTISEMENT By BEN PILLOW bpillow@beaufortgazette.com 843-986-5537 0 Comments Add Comment The body of a construction worker missing since Nov. 20 from a barge at the U.S. 17 bridge over the Combahee River was found Saturday afternoon, according to South Carolina's Department of Natural Resources. A fisherman spotted the body of Eddie Tyrone Hearns, 48, of Largo, Fla., about one mile inland from the bridge and called 911, according to Lt. Robert McCullough of DNR. Hearns' body was recovered about 1 p.m. Hearns was working for a Clearwater, Fla.-based company on one of five barges last month when he went missing. His jacket had been found downstream from the bridge near the Beaufort County-Colleton County border shortly after he disappeared. McCullough said authorities found information confirming Hearns' identity in the missing man's pants pocket Saturday. The body was taken to the Beaufort County Coroner's Office for an autopsy and Hearns' family was notified, according to McCullough. "At this time there's no suspicion of foul play, unless the coroner finds something," he said. Coroner Curt Copeland said the autopsy would probably be performed Monday http://www.beaufortgazette.com/local_news/...p-6018978c.html |
