The Jasper County Sheriff's Department says there's still no sign of an elderly South Carolina woman who has been missing for nearly a week. Bertha Wheeler hasn't been seen since she disappeared from her home in Point South, Jasper County on Tuesday. Since then, deputies have been searching a five mile area around her home by helicopter. They've also covered the ground with ATVs and bloodhounds. Wheeler is 82 years old and has Alzheimer's Disease.

If you have any information about where she is, call the Jasper County Sheriff's Department at (843) 726-7519.

Family members are camped out on Kress Road in Point South, South Carolina waiting for news about 82-year-old Bertha Wheeler. The Alzheimer's patient has been missing since Tuesday morning when she disappeared from her home.

But Bertha's family and friends are not giving up. As the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division helicopter makes another pass overhead, teams of police officers and sheriff's deputies drive up to search on foot with dogs and ATV's.

Emma Riley tries to comfort her friend's family while Bertha's daughter Margie is glued to her phone. All are eager for any news and grateful for the help they're getting. "It's just overwhelming, I just can't explain it right now because they're really really doing their job," said Riley.

For two days now, searchers have been doing that job, battling heat, humidity and very thick brush. "The wooded areas are very thick and this time of year, very overgrown and you have to do it foot by foot because the helicopter can't see into the densely thick areas of woods" explained Jasper County chief deputy Roy Hughes.

Police don't believe Bertha went very far from this area, but they just don't know. They're also not ruling out the possibility that she may have left with someone else.

"It's not as much frustrating as concerned about her well being and he health of course," said Hughes. That's our primary focus right now, trying to make sure we can locate her and that's she safe and sound."

Which is all the people who love her most can ask for as they watch, wait and pray. "I just pray god will give us the strength to continue to hold on," Riley told us.

Police have been searching a five mile area today and depending on what they do or do not find, they may expand their search area and reassess what can be done to try and find her.

If you have any information about Bertha's disappearance or whereabouts, please contact the Jasper County Sheriff's Office at 843.726.7519

JASPER COUNTY, SC--Human remains found in the Low Country today may put an end to a seven-month-old missing persons case in Jasper County. The remains were found in a wooded area off of Kress Road in the Pocataligo community. See Body Found in Woods May Be That of Missing Alzheimer's Patient.

The disappearance of 82-year-old Bertha Wheeler has haunted this community for months. "There are so many people from here to there that always ask have you found her yet, have you found her yet," said family member Bertie Riley.

While Ms. Wheeler's friends and family always hoped to find her alive, they say their prayers were answered today when a surveyor working in the woods found the remains of what authorities believe are those of Bertha Wheeler.

"All I could do is say thank you Lord because this is what I was praying for, for the longest that they'd find her," said Wheeler's caretaker and cousin Emma Riley.

"When I walk this road, I'm looking for her all the time, at least three or four times a week," said Bertie. "You know so it is a relief it's putting some closure to it."

Authorities found the remains and Ms. Wheeler's purse about two miles back in a wooded area, just a few miles from Ms. Wheeler's home. "I had no idea she was this close," said Emma.

Ms. Wheeler disappeared back in May after Bertie dropped her off at her home for a few hours during the day. "She started to develop dementia, early stages of dementia and I think she probably got disoriented and walked out of the house," said Bertie.

But even after a long and in-depth search of the area, there was no sign of her until today.

Authorities will be sending the remains to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston to make a positive identification.
