Mother of missing Kingston man offers $5,000 reward
By Paul Kirby, Freeman staff
04/16/2008

KINGSTON - This coming Monday will be the fifth anniversary of David Michael Reilly's disappearance.

On Tuesday, his mother offered a $5,000 reward for any information leading to the whereabouts of her 30-year-old son.

Diane Reilly remains optimistic.

"I will always hold out hope but if he is (not alive), we need to find him," Mrs. Reilly said Tuesday.

Her son s been missing since Nov. 21, 2007. There has been no trace of him beyond some personal belongings found on a path near the Rondout Creek, authorities have said.

Those personal items, including his blue Izod hat, were found Nov. 25 by his father, Mike, along a path on the Connelly side of the Rondout Creek.

Detective Lt. Timothy Matthews said police have no new leads in the case but added that if the reward generates any, police "will follow them up."

Reilly, who lived on Boulder Avenue, was last seen at 4:30 a.m. Nov. 21, wearing the blue Izod hat, blue jeans and a blue zip-up jacket. Police described him as standing 5-feet, 10-inches tall, weighing 180 pounds, with blond hair and blue eyes.

Reilly was last seen by his girlfriend when the couple left a bar near Abeel Street and Broadway, Matthews said. They had just had a fight, and Reilly walked away from her in an intoxicated state. She left and returned with her car to pick him up but could not find him, police said.

Mrs. Reilly, a lifelong Kingston resident, said a banner is expected to be hung at the Downtown Café reminding visitors of her son's disappearance.

7:15 p.m. UPDATE: Body found near river believed to be missing man
By Kyle Wind, Freeman staff
07/23/2008

EAST KINGSTON - A body found on the Hudson River shore in this town of Ulster hamlet appears to be that of David Michael Reilly, a Kingston resident who disappeared last fall, town police said on Wednesday.

Police responded to the shore near Terry Lane in East Kingston about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday after receiving a report that a body had been seen there by a boater. Town of Ulster police and the Ulster County Sheriff's Office recovered the body, and an autopsy conducted on Wednesday tentatively identified the deceased man as Reilly, according to town Police Chief Paul Watzka.

The cause of death appears to be drowning, Watzka said.

"There is no evidence of foul play, but we're still going to double check," said Detective Lt. Timothy Matthews of the Kingston Police Department.

Watzka, in a prepared statement, said forensic tests still were being conducted to confirm the man's identity and the exact cause of death.

Reilly, 30, of Boulder Avenue in Kingston, was last seen near the Rondout Creek in Kingston on Nov. 21, 2007. Police said at the time that Reilly and his girlfriend had left a bar near Abeel Street and Broadway about 4:30 that morning and had a fight before Reilly walked away in an intoxicated state.

The girlfriend then left and returned with her car to pick Reilly up but could not find him, authorities said.

Items belonging to Reilly, including a blue Izod hat, were found on the Connelly side of the creek, across from Downtown Kingston, on Nov. 25, but a lengthy search for the missing man came up empty.

Police and volunteers searched for Reilly extensively in late November, and, "even though the physical search ended in early December, we never really stopped searching," Matthews said on Wednesday.

"A lot of man hours went into that," Matthews said, noting that help was provided by several other agencies, including the Ulster County Sheriff's Office, the state police and the New York City Department of Environmental Protection police.

Asked about the body being found upstream from the junction of the Rondout Creek and Hudson River, Matthews said the Coast Guard told him it's not unusual for the river's strong tidal currents to pull objects northward.

Reilly's father, Mike, described his son as an outgoing person with many friends.

"He was one of the nicest guy's you'll ever meet," the elder Reilly said on Wednesday. "He could really light up a room."

Mike Reilly, who lived with David, said the volunteers who searched for his son included about 60 friends and relatives of the missing man.

Reilly said his son was athletic and that his hobbies included golf, softball, hiking and spending time with his family.

The father described family members' state of mind on Wednesday as "not good" and said they may eventually find peace in knowing what happened to his son, but "not yet."
