Authorities are now investigating the human remains found in a Newton County field as a homicide. Autopsy results in Springfield Tuesday night reveal a bullet in the skull. The remains were found Monday night by a man mowing his field along Raven Road near Highway 86. The Newton County sheriff believes the remains are of a man who has been dead for at least three weeks. Police have yet to piece together an identity and cause of death. Sheriff Ken Copeland says there are no known missing persons in the area but they will send out the information to surrounding counties and states to help identify the victim. Anyone who has information should contact the Newton County Sheriff's Office: (417) 451-8300 The sheriff's office says the remains were found with some clothing, which included: a black coat blue jeans grey pullover shirt Dock Martin shoes Picture below is a picture of a necklace that was also found near the remains. If you recognize this item, or have other information please contact the sheriffs office. Sheriff Copeland says the remains were found in an area near the road, and in another part of the field. He says it is likely animals had disturbed the remains. One woman we spoke with says she drives up and down the road every day, and says she did see something lying near the road. "It does it worries you, you're afraid of mischief, you're mind always goes to that area," says Becky Gregor. "But at the same time you have the thought of somebody, what if somebody needed help, and nobody was around to help them?" http://www.koamtv.com/Global/story.asp?S=8278491 |

Neosho, Mo. - Authorities are hopeful someone has information about the owner of a gold necklace, recovered from skeletal remains discovered Monday evening in a field near Granby. The Newton County Sheriff’s Department is seeking information as to who may have owned the necklace, shown at right. The item features a heavy, gold-toned chain and a large semi-precious stone. On Monday, deputies with the sheriff’s department received a telephone call from a Granby farmer who said he had discovered human remains while bush hogging a field. The badly decomposed remains were found in a field near Raven Road in eastern Newton County, and had been partially scattered by animals, according to Newton County Sheriff Ken Copeland. The remains are being sent to Springfield for analysis as to gender, height, weight, and a possible cause of death. If anyone has any information about the necklace, or its owner, please call the Newton County Sheriff’s Department at 451-8300. http://www.neoshodailynews.com/news/x19055...nfo-on-necklace |

Springfield anthropologist: Skeleton that of Asian male By Jeff Lehr jlehr@joplinglobe.com An anthropologist from Missouri State University determined Friday that a skeleton discovered this week in Newton County is that of a male. “Her opinion is that the skeletal remains are those of an Asian male, possibly around 40 (years old),” Newton County Sheriff Ken Copeland said. The anthropologist needs to do more testing to firm up her opinion and to try to pinpoint an approximate date of death for the unidentified homicide victim, he said. A bullet was found in the decomposed brain tissue inside the skull of the remains, supporting the Newton County Sheriff’s Department officials’ belief they have a homicide investigation in progress. The sheriff said the university anthropologist in Springfield took numerous measurements of the remains Friday morning as well as tissue and bone samples for study. More may be known about the victim as early as next week, he said. The remains were found in a field along Raven Road just north of Highway 86, south of Granby. They were discovered about 20 feet off the roadway, along with various items of clothing believed to have belonged to the victim and a gold necklace with an oval pendant around the neck. The set-stone pendant has an inscription on the back in what appeared to investigators to be a foreign language. The inscription has been shown to language instructors at Missouri Southern State University in an effort to identify the language and the meaning of the inscription. Copeland declined to say if those instructors had identified the language as any particular Asian tongue. Items of clothing recovered from the area include a pair of Levi’s jeans, a pullover-type shirt thought to have been gray in color, a black jacket or coat bearing the Claiborne brand label, and one Doc Marten brand shoe. The sheriff has said that the body appeared to him to have been decomposing for about four to six months. But investigators are hoping to get a more expert estimation of the date of death from the anthropologist or a forensic pathologist in Springfield after tests are completed. http://www.joplinglobe.com/local/local_story_130215006.html |

Body believed to be Asian male -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- By John Ford Neosho Daily News Sun May 11, 2008, 02:05 AM CDT -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Story Tools: Email This | Print This Neosho, Mo. - A Springfield anthropologist has tentatively identified remains found in an eastern Newton County field last Monday as those of an Asian male in his 40s. However, the anthropologist told authorities she would conduct more tests on the remains this week. “She’s pretty certain he was an Asian male about 40 or so,” said Newton County Sheriff Ken Copeland. “She took a lot of samples and measurements, and will run a lot of tests. Hopefully next week she’ll have something more for us.” On Monday, a farmer bush hogging a field near Raven Road discovered human remains about 20 feet off of the roadway. The Newton County Sheriff’s Department posted a guard over the remains overnight, then deputies began searching the field early the next morning, discovering more human remains as well as clothing items and jewelry. Authorities believe animals dragged the remains about 60 feet from where it originally lay. Late last week, medical examiners performing an autopsy on the remains in Springfield discovered during an X-ray that a bullet was in the skull. Authorities then upgraded the investigation to a homicide. A gold toned pendant with a large oval stone was found with the remains, Copeland said. The pendant contained an inscription in what is believed to be an Asian language, the sheriff said. On Friday, investigators took the pendant to Missouri Southern State University in Joplin to see if a language professor could determine which language it was and, possibly, what the inscription says. “We’re in the process of getting that identified,” Copeland said. Clothing recovered at the scene included men’s underwear, Levi’s blue jeans, a gray pullover shirt, a black jacket or coat and one Doc Marten brand shoe. In a recent interview, Copeland said he thought the remains had been out in the field four to six months, basing this guess on bodies he has seen in the past. He has said the anthropologist may be able to give further information on an approximate date of death after her tests were complete this week. http://www.neoshodailynews.com/news/x19439...o-be-Asian-male |

http://www.news-leader.com/apps/pbcs.dll/a...KING01/80513024 Newton County authorities have identified skeletal remains found May 6 as the body of a 40-year-old Asian man missing since January. The remains, discovered on Raven Road north of Missouri 86, were identified through dental records, according to a news release from the Newton County Sheriff’s Department. Ger Lee, 40, was reported missing from Cassville Feb. 21. He had last been seen Jan. 10 when he left Cassville to return to St. Paul, Minn., the release said.
