Winds halt missing boater search on Susquehanna Rescuers scoured the Susquehanna River again Thursday for wounded veteran Christopher Johnson. By ANGIE MASON Daily Record/Sunday News Article Launched: 05/23/2008 12:59:34 AM EDT The search for a missing Lancaster County boater was called off Thursday afternoon for the second day in a row because of bad weather. Rescuers resumed a search of the Susquehanna River for Christopher Dean Johnson, 24, of Manor Township on Thursday morning. His boat, still running and holding his yellow Labrador retriever, was found along the York County shoreline Wednesday morning. About 3:30 p.m. Thursday, it was too windy to keep searching, said Brian Morrin, spokesman for York County emergency management. Gusts of up to 30 miles per hour made it too dangerous to be on the water, he said. Those searching for Johnson had to rescue a group of his friends who went out searching on their own, Morrin said. Their boat, carrying five people, began taking on water near the Lancaster County side of the river, he said. "We did get everyone out of the water safely," he said. The search will resume when the wind dies down, Morrin said. Earlier in the day, Johnson's family and friends expressed hope he will be found alive. "If anyone could survive on this water, it would be him," said Jennifer Wilson, Johnson's cousin. Johnson is a Marine who was shot in the right arm while serving in Iraq in 2004, she said. He spent one year at Walter Reed Army Medical Center after he was injured. Wilson said her cousin, who was to be married this summer, had his own boat and often went duck hunting and fishing. Because he has only one arm, there was some question about whether he lost control of the boat, she said. Earlier in the day, four rescue boats and two divers were in the water, Morrin said. The islands and shoreline were being searched as well, he said. Johnson launched his boat from the Lancaster County side of the river about 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to Lower Windsor Township Police Chief David Sterner. The boat was discovered about 10 a.m. on the York County shoreline by a high school biology class out kayaking. Drew Wilson, a friend of Johnson's through a Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Lancaster County, and others waited along the river as the search went on. "It's not over because he's gone through so much," Wilson said. "It's possible he's still alive." amason@ydr.com; 771-2048 http://www.inyork.com/local/ci_9353834 |

Search continues for man The Iraq war veteran has been missing since his boat was found Wednesday on the Susquehanna. By MICHELE CANTY Daily Record/Sunday News Article Launched: 05/24/2008 12:23:22 AM EDT Four dogs and groups of volunteers joined the search for a missing Lancaster County man Friday, officials said. It was the third day rescuers looked for an Iraq veteran believed to have fallen from his boat into the Susquehanna River earlier this week. Christopher Dean Johnson, 24, of Manor Township, had not been found as of late Friday night, officials said. The dogs will help searchers narrow down an area to look for the avid boater and fisherman, said Brian Morrin, York County public information Officer. Johnson's boat, still running and holding his yellow Labrador retriever, was found Wednesday morning on the York County shoreline. Several dozen volunteers, including a group of U.S. Marines, came out to help look for the missing man Friday, Morrin said. The Marines searched the shoreline and woods on foot, walking in areas where Johnson might have come out of the water. The search area is a 5-mile swath north of the Safe Harbor Dam. Emergency responders from York and Lancaster counties, as well as squads from other areas in the state, have been scouring the area for days. Johnson's family members expressed hope Thursday that he would be found alive. They could not be reached for comment Friday. Johnson is a Marine who served a few months in Iraq before he was shot in the right arm in 2004. He spent one year at Walter Reed Army Medical Center after he was injured, family members said. A biology class from Northeastern Senior High School was kayaking when they found the boat still running along the shoreline amid some logs and trees, officials said. 771-2028; mcanty@ydr.com. http://www.inyork.com/ci_9365165?source=most_viewed |
