http://www.wishtv.com/dpp/news/crime/Human...tified_20091015 Johnson Co. remains identified from DNA Authorities still have many questions in this case Updated: Thursday, 15 Oct 2009, 6:57 PM EDT Published : Thursday, 15 Oct 2009, 10:18 AM EDT Mike Corbin Edited by Hyacinth Williams JOHNSON COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) - Johnson County authorities now know the identity of human remains found a year and a half ago, but the case remains riddled with questions. Forensic experts used DNA evidence to positively identify the remains as 35-year-old Sahbaz Jasarevic of Bosnia. In April 2008, a mushroom hunter found a shallow grave with human remains. “It would be speculation but I would assume this probably has the ability to be something larger than local crime,” said Sheriff Terry McLaughlin of the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department. That’s because authorities say along with the remains and some clothing, they found a fake ID that contains Jasarevic’s photo, but the ID carries the name Hugo Garcia Nungaray of Guadalajara, Mexico. Jasarevic had a temporary visa visiting relatives in California. Investigators said his niece saw his photo on a Web site and knew the Mexican identification was wrong. They have no idea how he wound up in Indiana. He has not ties to the state or in Mexico. “Who he lived with and who he stayed with we don’t know at that time and that’s why we’re reaching out today," said Det. Bryan Bartlett. Investigators are not revealing how they think Jasarevic died. However, they’re not calling the case a homicide. They say they checked with relatives back in Bosnia, immigration officials and others and so far, nothing. “Initially when we believed it was Hugo Garcia Nungaray, we asked for their assistance too with immigration to see if they had any idea who he was, where he was from, we also contacted the Mexican consulate and then as we got the information on who he actually was, we did make contact again and received no further information from any federal authorities," said Det. Andy Barnhart. Authorities believe Jasarevic’s remains were in the ground for about three months. They also said they checked with members of Central Indiana’s Bosnian community, but nobody knows him. He also reportedly had no ties to Camp Atterbury. |
