Found remains bring family hope for closure By: THERESE APEL, DAILY LEADER Staff Writer November 25, 2008 Email to a friend Voice your opinion One Brookhaven resident believes human remains found in Pike County to be those of his grandmother, who has been missing since July 22, 2007. Ruby Lee Wells, 72, 1109 Moore's Ave., McComb, was last seen at her residence last summer, officials said. An Alzheimer's patient, Wells had a history of wandering off. Advertisement Top Tips for Purchasing Life Insurance Top Three Ways to Increase Your Credit Score How to Avoid Bankruptcy "I kind of feel like it's her because of the area it was found in, the Higgins area. That's where she lived," said Wells' grandson Bobby Thomas. Officials said a dog that lived in the area had brought home a human skull, a long bone and a shoe. The discovery kicked off a weekend hunt in the woods near Higgins Middle School football field and the north side of Higgins Drive just outside McComb city limits by McComb and Pike County rescue workers, including a cadaver dog. "They said it was missing its teeth and she didn't have any teeth," Thomas said of his grandmother. Thomas said his family has been told that the remains will be sent to a lab to be DNA tested since there is no way to check dental records. He said it might be weeks before his family knows the outcome of the analysis, but that they have waited this long, and can be patient a few more weeks. "We're just praying for closure, and to have a memorial and to go on with our lives, have an answer," he said. "This would give us some kind of closure." It has been the family's faith in God and the loving support of his church, First Baptist Church, that has kept Thomas afloat in the hard times his family has faced since his father was killed in an auto accident just before his grandmother went missing. He said that the community's interest and support has also been a blessing. "We just wanted to let the community know she's still missing, because everyone's asking have we heard anything, and we still don't know anything," he said. "We just hope we've got something here and that we'll be able to lay her to rest." If the remains turn out not to belong to Wells, other Lincoln County residents are holding their breaths to see if it could possibly be Virginia Ratliff, 83, who disappeared Feb. 28, 2008. Pike County authorities say there is also a chance it belongs to Deborah Ann Brock of Jayess, whose abandoned car was found Feb. 5, 2004. "We're just going to keep praying," said Thomas. http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=...id=172922&rfi=6 |

Body remains identified as missing McComb woman The Associated Press Text Size: tool nameclose tool goes here MCCOMB, Miss. -- Pike County sheriff's deputies say the skeletal remains that were found Nov. 23 in a wooded area have been identified as those of Ruby Lee Wells, who had been missing for more than a year. Chief Deputy Steve Rushing said Saturday that a report from Scales Biological Laboratory in Brandon indicated that DNA extracted from the bones it received from the sheriff's department was a 99.62 percent match when compared with DNA from a relative of Wells. Rushing said the remains have been sent to the Mississippi State Crime Lab in Jackson for further analysis by a pathologist. An initial examination of the bones did not indicate any foul play.
