LATEST NEWS: Prosecutor seeks public's help identifying body found in Hamilton Township woods
By REGINA SCHAFFER Staff Writer, 609-272-7211
Published: Wednesday, December 17, 2008

MAYS LANDING - It was a deer hunter who discovered the body of a man found off the Black Horse Pike in Hamilton Township last week, wrapped in a large beige carpet and left in the woods, Atlantic County Prosecutor Ted Housel said Wednesday.

Revealing new details since the Dec. 9 discovery of the partially decomposed man, Housel, in a press conference, solicited the public's help in identifying the victim and his killer or killers. A police sketch of the man and photos of the carpet the man was found in were displayed for the media.

Housel said the victim is a white male believed to be between 30 and 40 years old, approximately 6 feet tall and between 200 and 250 pounds. In a press release Tuesday, Housel said the man was "killed execution style."

"I'm not going to tell you what evidence caused us to conclude that," he said Wednesday.
Housel did say, "We can pretty effectively rule out that there was a struggle."

The man's body was found on Taminnen Road, a secluded access road in a wooded area off the Black Horse Pike and near Atlantic Blueberry Farm, Housel said. The body was in the beginning stages of decomposition when it was found, Housel said.

Housel said the hunter arrived in the area at 9 a.m. and saw nothing suspicious at that time. Coming out of the woods briefly at 2 p.m., the hunter noticed a large beige carpet that was not there before, Housel said. The man returned to hunting and came back out of the woods at 5 p.m., Housel said. It was then the man decided to alert authorities to what he saw.

An autopsy performed by Atlantic County Medical Examiner Hydow Park revealed the cause of death to be homicide.

Housel said authorities determined the victim had been "missing for some period of time."

"We're thinking (he was missing) about a week," Housel said.

The victim has not been identified through dental records because he has never had any kind of dental work, Housel said.

Housel urged the public to come forward if they recognize the man in the police sketch.

"If someone says, 'Boy, that looks like somebody,' call us, tell us," Housel said. "We'll find out if that somebody is missing."

Anyone with any information about the case can call the Prosecutor's Office at 609-909-7800, or go to the Prosecutor's Office Web site at

ID of small-eared man found in rug remains a mystery
By JASON NARK
Philadelphia Daily News

A large black-and-white photograph of a dead man's left ear hung yesterday in a conference room in the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office.

The ear, authorities said, was still on the head of the man, who had been executed and whose fingerprints have yet to hit a match - at least in this country.

"This was a very large man with very small, round, distinctive ears," said Atlantic County Prosector Ted Housel during an afternoon news conference in Mays Landing.

Housel offered up these bizarre details yesterday because investigators have a genuine mystery on their hands: They have yet to identify the man found wrapped in a rug on Dec. 8 in the woods of Hamilton Township, let alone capture whoever apparently executed him.

"Somewhere, someone is missing this person," Housel said.

Investigators are keeping to themselves some major details, such as the cause of death or why they believe he was executed. But they are saying that no struggle preceded the murder and that the man with small ears may have known the person or people who snuffed him out.

"It was done deliberately for the purpose of causing death," Housel said.

The man's decomposing body, wrapped in a rug, was found by a deer-hunter a mile-and-a-half down a dirt trail in a heavily wooded tract between the Black Horse Pike and the Atlantic City Expressway.

The hunter, like thousands of others in New Jersey that day, was in the woods for the opening of shotgun season for white-tailed deer. The hunter had moved in and out of his spot several times that day and at one point noticed a large, beige rug that hadn't been there in the morning.

The victim, described as a white male between 30 and 40, had been dead at least a week, Housel said, before he was dumped in the woods.

"He could have been killed in Philadelphia, New York or Washington, D.C.," Housel said.

Housel said investigators believe that the indoor/outdoor rug, which had no visible bloodstains, was not the first choice for disposing the body, but he declined to elaborate. Investigators also believe that the rug, almost 12 feet by 9 feet, had been bought just before the body was dumped.

When asked if more than one person had been involved in dumping the body, Housel said that the victim was 6 feet tall and weighed between 200 and 250 pounds.

The killer or killers may have waited specifically for the opening day of shotgun season to dump the body, Housel said, knowing that a truck or van in the woods wouldn't seem out of the norm that day.

"This wasn't done with a Volkswagen Beetle," he added.

Housel said dental records weren't possible because the man with small ears had no fillings or repair work on his teeth.

All four of his wisdom teeth were impacted.

Anyone with information about this incident can call the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office at 609-909-7800, or go to www.acpo.org/tips.html to fill out the form anonymously on the Submit a Tip page. Rewards also are offered through Crime Stoppers at 609-652-1234 or 1-800-658-8477 (TIPS).

Atlantic County authorities seek public help to ID man found murdered in woods execution-style
by South Jersey News Online
Wednesday December 17, 2008, 6:24 PM

MAYS LANDING -- Authorities holding a press conference Wednesday afternoon sought the public's assistance in identifying a male body discovered by a hunter on Dec. 8 who appeared to be murdered execution-style, wrapped in a 12' long rug and dumped in the woods off of Route 322 in Hamilton Township.

"I can tell you forensic evidence makes it pretty clear this homicide was execution style," Prosecutor Ted Housel stated.

The victim, who it is believed was dropped in the woods between the hours of approximately 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Dec. 8, is described as being between 30 to 40-year-old, approximately 6' 0" in height and weighing between 200 to 250 pounds. A defining characteristic of the man is that, for a person of his size and stature, he appeared to have very small, round ears comparatively.
"Somewhere, somebody is missing this person," Prosecutor Housel stated during the news conference. "It's the holiday season. You would think someone is concerned."

Authorities believe the victim could be from New Jersey or any number of surrounding areas, including New York or Washington D.C. The victim was dead for at least a week before being left in the woods, and identifying the victim through traditional methods has so far proved to be fruitless, as the man seems to have never had any dental work done, and no match has come back on fingerprints.

Authorities are now asking anyone who believes they may have come across a man resembling the composite sketch, which was released at the press conference, to please call the Prosecutor's Office or investigators, as even the smallest bit of unknown information may provide useful in determining the origin of this man and from where he might be missing.

The area of the woods the man was discovered in is easily accessible, sandwiched between route 30 and route 322, and the beginning of deer season on Dec. 8 would mean vehicles traveling through the wooded, secluded area would not have been unusual. However, anyone who saw a vehicle traveling in the area of the discovery between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. should contact the Office.

In addition, anyone who may have an idea on where the rug used to wrap the body up could be purchased is also urged to contact authorities. The rug is described as beige, and could have come home improvement or remnants store, but they do feel the rug was purchased specifically for the purpose of transporting the body.

Those with information are urged to contact the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office at 609-909-7800, Crime Stoppers at 609-652-1234 or 1-800-658-8477 (TIPS) or by filling out an anonymous survey at the Prosecutor's Web Site at http://www.acpo.org/tips.html.

Arrests Made After Discovery Of Decomposed Body

HAMILTON Twp. (CBS 3) ¯ A Pennsylvania woman has been arrested after allegedly putting a hit out on her father and disposing his body in the New Jersey Pinelands.

Authorities began their investigation after a hunter found the decomposed body of 46-year-old Marc Rubin wrapped in a carpet in the woods of Hamilton Township on December 8.

Investigators later learned the victim's daughter, Christina Rubin, allegedly paid her boyfriend, Jeffrey Leinheiser, $1,000 to kill her father.

Leinheiser allegedly shot Rubin once in the head while he was sleeping in the family apartment in Abington Township on November 28.

The couple was allegedly joined by a third suspect in multiple attempts to dispose of the body. Prosecutors said the suspects dragged the body down nine flights of steps and took it nearly 90 miles away to Atlantic County.

After trying to dismember the body with a chainsaw, the suspects apparently attempted to dump it in the Atlantic Ocean before deciding to wrap it in a carpet and leave it in a wooded area off the Black Horse Pike.

Christina Rubin graduated from Penn State in 2008 and was said to be a candidate for a Masters in behavioral psychology.

"No matter how intelligent someone is, no matter how much background they have in psychology, no matter how much education they have, most people out there are not experienced killers," said Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Ferman. "Everything they touched was botched.

Investigators believe an argument over the phone prompted the brutal crime.
