http://www.azcentral.com/community/chandle...ingman0106.html Man still missing in Coconino National Forest by Erin Norris - Jan. 7, 2009 02:45 PM The Arizona Republic The Coconino County Sheriff's Office was continuing the search Tuesday for a man who went missing Friday while riding an ATV near Forest Lakes, officials said. Mark Russell Irby, 51, was last seen around 10 a.m. when he went out to ride a red Bombardier ATV in the Coconino National Forest, sheriff's spokesman Gerry Blair said. "We're discouraged that we haven't found him yet," Blair said. Irby is described as a White male, 5 feet 10, 175 pounds, with brown hair, brown eyes and prescription glasses. He was last seen wearing a denim shirt, blue jeans and socks with Crocs-style shoes. The ATV he was riding had Arizona plates 36B-175. Irby takes medication for high blood pressure and he was not prepared for extreme weather or an extended trip. He had been known to travel west of Forest Lakes and on the trails between the subdivision and Forest Service Road 237. The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office and the Gila County Sheriff's Office have been assisting with the search, Blair said. Forest Lakes is about 35 miles northeast of Payson. http://www.azcentral.com/community/chandle...ingman0108.html Search still on for missing Chandler businessman by Megan Boehnke and Edythe Jensen - Jan. 7, 2009 03:47 PM The Arizona Republic Authorities are still searching for a prominent Chandler businessman and community leader six days after he went missing from his family's vacation home in Forest Lakes, east of Payson. While as many as 37 people from seven agencies have been on snowmobiles and ATVs looking for 51-year-old Mark Irby, the Coconino Sheriff's Office has also opened an independent criminal investigation, said Gerry Blair, spokesman for the sheriff's office. "We certainly hope we find him alive and can reunite him with his family," Blair said. But, he added, officials have to keep open all potential explanations, including foul play and the possibility that Irby left the area on his own. Irby, who has served on Chandler's planning and zoning commission since 2002, had a lien placed against his Ocotillo home in early December by his homeowner's association, which claims Irby and his wife, Lynn, owe $483.00 in HOA fees. Irby's family told deputies that they were preparing to return to their Chandler home Friday morning when Irby said he was taking the ATV out for a quick ride along residential streets at about 9 a.m. It's a circuit he often rode and called "the loop." He was dressed in a denim shirt, jeans and Croc-style shoes, unprepared for potentially overnight trek in the woods, where temperatures drop to about 19 degrees, Blair said. Search and rescue teams exhausted the search of around the roads in the neighborhood and connecting forest service roads. A the three to four-foot snow pack has made it difficult to access wooded areas, and an additional 10-inch snowfall Sunday may have covered up any undiscovered evidence, Blair said. Blair said Irby, an architect with a firm in Tempe, expressed interest to his family about the ability of area roofs to hold heavy amounts of snow. This is led search teams to use probes around nearby structures to see if perhaps snow had fallen on Irby while he was looking at the roofs, burying him. They are still searching those areas. Emails have been circulating among city workers and volunteers this week, expressing concern for their missing friend and colleague. Hank Pluster, retired Chandler long-range planning director, worked with Irby through the Planning and Zoning Commission for several years. "He is an honest man and has a lot of passion for his profession and his work on the Planning Commission. I am very concerned for his well-being," Pluster said. In 1998, Irby was featured in The Republic for refurbishing a 115-year old house on Ash Avenue in Tempe for his architecture firm, Irby Studios Architects and Planners. Irby is originally from Michigan and, according to his 2002 commission application, is a registered architect in California, Nevada and Arizona and served on the Downtown Tempe Community Board of Directors for six years. |

http://www.eastvalleytribune.com/story/134720 Still no sign of missing Chandler commissioner Comments 8| Recommend 2 Ari Cohn, Tribune January 28, 2009 - 6:10PM Digg| Save| License| Print| E-mail| Mark Irby SUBMITTED PHOTOThe city of Chandler has no immediate plans to fill a Planning and Zoning Commission seat left vacant by Mark Irby, who went missing nearly a month ago in northern Arizona. Searchers have found no sign of the 51-year-old Irby, who was last seen Jan. 2, when he left his cabin in Forest Lakes for a ride on his red Bombardier ATV (license plate number DV-4X). Coconino County Sheriff's Office spokesman Gerry Blair said search efforts recently have been scaled back. "We just don't know. It's just baffling. You'd think we could find the ATV, but we just haven't," he said. Sheriff's deputies and U.S. Forest Service officials in the area will continue to chase down all leads, but overflights have been curtailed and large-scale efforts have concluded, Blair said. "We certainly don't have the 50 or 60 people in the field that we did before," he said. "We felt like we've hit it really hard." Irby was appointed to the Planning and Zoning Commission in May 2002. "His term would be up at the end of April," said Jane Poston, a Chandler spokeswoman. City officials could wait until then to appoint a replacement if Irby is not found, she said. City guidelines provide that a commissioner can be removed after he or she has accrued three unexcused absences from commission meetings. Irby has missed two meetings, Poston said. She said that so far, his absence has not impacted the board's ability to make decisions. "At this point, we haven't seen they've had any locked votes," Poston said. City officials have not had any discussions on what to do with Irby's seat, she said. Irby is described as being 5 feet 10 inches tall and 175 pounds, with brown hair, brown eyes, and wearing prescription eyeglasses. He was wearing a denim shirt, Levi jeans, and Croc shoes when he went missing, and he was not prepared for an overnight excursion, Coconino Sheriff's Office officials have said. Irby did not have his blood pressure medication with him, either. Forest Lakes is in a mountainous, pine forest area at about 7,000 feet elevation east of Payson. In recent weeks the area has seen about 3 to 4 feet of snowpack, with temperatures dipping below 20 degrees overnight. A $5,000 reward has been established for information leading to the recovery of both Irby and his ATV. Additionally, donations to the search effort can be made to the Jim Irby Search Fund at Wells Fargo, which has been created by Mark's brother, Jim Irby. |

http://www.eastvalleytribune.com/story/133805 No signs of missing Chandler man in Payson area January 8, 2009 - 11:17AM Anxiety about Mark Irby, a Chandler Planning and Zoning Commission member who went missing in the northern Arizona mountains a week ago, continues to mount as searchers have yet to find any sign of him. "As this drags on and we're not getting anything at all, they're getting a little frustrated," Coconino County Sheriff's Office spokesman Gerry Blair said. The last time anyone saw Irby, 51, was around 9 a.m. Friday, when he left his cabin in Forest Lakes to ride his red Bombardier ATV (license plate number DV-4X), Blair said. Irby was wearing a denim shirt, Levi jeans, and "Croc" shoes. Blair said Forest Lakes - a mountainous, pine forest area at about 7,000 feet elevation east of Payson - has about 3 to 4 feet of snowpack, with temperatures dipping below 20 degrees overnight. Irby was not prepared for an overnight trip, he said. Irby did not have his blood pressure medication with him, either, Blair said. "The family was preparing to shut the cabin up and go back to their primary residence in Chandler," he said. "We're quite concerned." Nearly 40 people from seven agencies, including Coconino, Gila and Maricopa counties, representatives of the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the U.S. Forest Service and the Forest Lakes Fire Department, continue to search for Irby. Search parties have employed helicopters, airplanes, snowmobiles and snowshoes. However, their efforts have been frustrated by snowstorms like the one that dumped about 10 inches on the area Sunday and Monday. The additional snow may have obscured evidence of what happened, Blair said. Forest Lakes is a community comprised mainly of vacation cabins, he said. It's known that Irby, an architect, was interested in the load-bearing properties of those cabins, so crews have been searching snowdrifts around them, as well. "We have not found anything to indicate foul play or that he left the area voluntarily," Blair said. |

http://www.abc15.com/content/news/phoenixm...0cLj5jhd_A.cspx Man goes missing in N. Arizona, is foul play to blame? Last Update: 1/08 9:15 am A criminal investigation has been opened into the disappearance of a Phoenix-area architect who vanished nearly a week ago from his northern Arizona mountain vacation home. Coconino County sheriff's spokesman Gerry Blair says the investigation is independent of the continuing search in snow-covered wooded areas for 51-year-old Mark Irby. The Arizona Republic says a lien was placed against Irby's Chandler home in early December by his homeowner's association, which claims Irby and his wife, Lynn, owe $483 in HOA fees. Family members said they were preparing to return to Chandler Friday when Irby said he was taking his ATV out for a quick ride in Forest Lakes, east of Payson. He never returned. http://www.paysonroundup.com/news/2009/jan...r_forest_lakes/ Man still missing near Forest Lakes By Alexis Bechman January 9, 2009 Searchers are still looking for a 51-year-old Chandler architect who has been missing for a week. Mark Russell Irby was last seen Jan. 2 around 10 a.m. by family members before he headed out for a short ride on his red ATV. Irby said he would be riding the loop around the Forest Lakes subdivision near his home. The family had planned to return to their main home in Chandler once Irby returned. Searchers have found no trace of Irby or his ATV. Gerry Blair, of the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, said two single-engine aircrafts, , one from New Mexico and one from California, with special cameras to take photos of anything on the ground that is red along with the GPS coordinates were brought in Thursday. Once a plane lands, rescuers analyze the photos and send crews out to any areas of interest. Even with the high tech tools, Blair said the search is challenging for rescuers who are facing freezing temperatures and several feet of snow. “We are still out looking because our job is to find him alive and get him back to his family,” Blair said. Crews also used probing devices to search around homes in the subdivision. Searches along Forest Road 99 and the Rim have turned up no clues. Irby is 5 feet 10 inches tall, 175 pounds, has brown hair and brown eyes and wears glasses. He was last seen wearing a denim shirt, blue jeans, “Croc” style plastic shoes and riding a red Bombardier ATV with Arizona license plate DV4X. Irby was not dressed or prepared for weather. Anyone with information about Irby can call (928) 774-4523 or (800) 338-7888. |

http://www.kpho.com/news/18945280/detail.html PHOENIX -- The red Bombardier all-terrain vehicle that missing person Mark Russell Irby was last seen riding has been located, said the Coconino County Sheriff. Reports say two men from Snowflake who were hunting and fishing in the area late Saturday found the abandoned ATV just off Forest Service Road, about 12 miles from Irby's home in Forest Lakes. On Sunday, 11 deputies, officers and volunteers from Coconino County searched the area. Intensive search efforts will continue this week. Reports say Irby had planned for a short ride the morning he disappeared on January 2, 2009. He was last seen wearing a denim shirt, blue jeans and "Croc" style plastic shoes and was not prepared to hike or stay overnight in the area. Prior to the location of his ATV, several agencies have searched for Irby for over 1,800 hours by land, eight hours by helicopter, and 20 hours by plane. A criminal probe has been opened in relation to his disappearance. |

http://zoniereport.com/2009/03/found-atv-m...-still-missing/ Found ATV, Mark Irby still missing · March 22, 2009 Forest Lakes, Az By Barbara Walker Although missing person Mark Russell Irby’s all terrain vehicle was found authorities are no closer to finding out what happened to the Chandler Planning Commissioner. Irby went missing Friday, Jan. 2, 2009 from his northern Arizona vacation home during the dead of winter, said Gerry Blair, spokesman for Coconino Sheriff’s Department. Reports from the sheriff’s department stated that Irby left for a short ride and was wearing “Croc” like rubber shoes even though the ground was covered in snow when he disappeared. It doesn’t seem the 51 year-old Chandler man was planning on a long ride, Blair said. He added that Irby didn’t have any mental conditions or was on any medication that might explain his disappearance. Blair said unfortunately at this time the red ATV hadn’t lead to any new clues as to what’s happened to Irby. Even the one air-scent canine wasn’t able to lead authorities to any new information. “With the ATV being in the snow and missing for so long, I doubt any of the canine units will find anything,” Blair said. They used seven total canine units, including the one canine able to pick up clues in the air. At the time of talking to Blair, he wasn’t sure if the ATV had been buried in the snow, or what its condition was for the last 10 weeks. According to a story in the Arizona Republic, Irby transferred his business property, rental property and home to a limited-liability corporation a few weeks before he disappeared. The paper goes on to quote Irby’s brother, Jim Irby, as saying he suspected foul play. You can read the story here. Irby’s ATV was found off of Forest Service Road 170 about one mile south-east of the Chevelon Canyon Lake on Sunday, Mar. 14 by two men from Snowflake, Az., on a hunting and fishing trip near the lake, Blair said. The ATV was about 12 miles from Irby’s home. |

http://www.azcentral.com/community/chandle...r-Irby0609.html Body of missing Chandler official found near Payson by Megan Boehnke - Jun. 8, 2009 04:24 PM The Arizona Republic The remains of a Chandler planning and zoning commissioner who disappeared from his family's vacation cabin in January were found Saturday by four Phoenix-area tourists on the shore of Chevlon Canyon Lake east of Payson. The medical examiner has not determined the cause and manner of his death, but the identification was made by a Flagstaff dentist through Irby's dental records. Mark Irby, 51, a prominent businessman who owned an architecture firm in Tempe, told his family on Jan. 2 that he was going to for a short ATV ride near his Forest Lakes home. When he didn't return, hundreds of volunteers spent nearly a month searching for him and holding out hope that he was alive. His red ATV was spotted by hunters on a hillside more than 10 miles from his home on March 14, prompting a new search for his body. The visitors found the body about 2 p.m. Saturday while fishing along the shore, according to the sheriff's office. Sheriff's deputies and officials with the Coconino County Medical Examiner's Office and U.S. Forest Services returned Sunday to recover the body. The autopsy was performed Monday. The body was about 12 miles northwest of his subdivision and about 2.2 miles from the ATV, sheriff's officials said. |
