CHEBOYGAN - DNA lab results indicate unidentified body remains found on the Lake Huron shoreline last year are not those of two men missing in separate incidents - a 2005 boating mishap and 2007 plane crash. A Wednesday news release from the Cheboygan Michigan State Police (MSP) post said the Cheboygan and Alpena MSP have two open missing persons investigations. DNA testing of a human torso found in Cheboygan County’s Benton Township in May, 2008 and a human foot recovered in Ocqueoc Township, Presque Isle County in July 2008, failed to match family DNA profiles from either of the missing men. A DNA profile conducted by a University of North Texas lab indicated the remains did belong to the same individual. One of the men, 34-year-old Charles Rutherford Jr. from Grosse Pointe, was involved in an Aug. 11, 2005 incident where he and a second boater came up missing while traveling between Rogers City and Mackinac Island. Their empty boat was found floating near Marquette Island the following day. The body of Rutherford’s companion, Lana Stempien, 35, from Grosse Pointe, was found washed up on the Lake Huron shoreline a couple weeks later, about three miles from where the torso was recovered. Rutherford’s body has never been found. - Advertisement - The body of Henry Stauffer, 56, from Washington D.C. was never recovered following an Aug. 24, 2007 airplane crash in the Straits of Mackinac area. Stauffer was a passenger in an airplane piloted by Karen Dodds, whose body was recovered near the Mackinac Bridge in October, 2007. According to the news release DNA profiles of the recovered body parts were compared with a national data base of the relatives of missing persons and no matches were reportedly made. A biological profile compiled by Michigan State University forensic anthropologist Dr. Norman Sauer indicated it is his belief the recovered remains belonged to a 30-60-year-old male who was 5’6” to 5’9” in height. The news release said the recovered foot was found inside a sock and size 10 Reebok sandal. Investigators continue to submit additional DNA samples from family members of missing persons from the northern Lake Huron and Lake Michigan areas. According to the Cheboygan MSP there are a number of missing persons who have never been found dating back to incidents in the Straits area from the past four years. Anyone who believes they may have an investigative lead as to the identity of the remains should contact the Cheboygan post at 231-627-9973 or the Alpena post at 989-354-4101. |

Cheboygan, Mich. - Almost 17 months after human remains were discovered on the south shore of Lake Huron, the identity of the body is still a mystery, troopers from the Michigan State Police Cheboygan post announced today. On May 26, 2008, a human torso was found in Benton Township in Cheboygan County, just east of Cheboygan. On July 28, 2008, a human foot was found in Ocqueoc Township in Presque Isle County, approximately 15 miles northwest of Rogers City. Analysis from the University of North Texas determined the torso and foot belonged to the same person. Michigan State University forensic anthropologist Norman Sauer believes the remains belong to a male between the ages of 30 and 60 and between 5-foot-6 and 5-9. Local authorities were hoping the remains would help them solve two outstanding cases. Charles Rutherford Jr., 34, of Grosse Pointe, was involved in a fatal boating accident on August 11, 2005. The empty boat was found adrift the next day and the body of one of the occupants, Lana Stempien, 35, of Grosse Pointe was found washed up on Lake Huron three miles from where the torso was discovered. Rutherford’s body has never been recovered. On August 24, 2007, Henry Stauffer, 56, of Washington was a passenger in a plane that crashed in the Straits Area. The body of the pilot, Karen Dodds, was discovered near the Mackinac Bridge on Oct. 8, 2007, but Stauffer’s body has never been recovered. The DNA recovered from the body parts were compared to Rutherford and Stauffer with no match. The DNA was also compared to a national database of relatives of missing persons with no match. Officials says there are a number of missing persons that have never been recovered from various incidents in the Straits Area in the past few years. (Identified! The remains were MUCH older than previously thought. Rest in peace, Dillon.) http://www.cheboygannews.com/news/x1129163...officially-IDed Remains officially IDed By Mike Fornes Cheboygan Daily Tribune Posted Sep 17, 2010 @ 01:59 AM Frand Rapids, Mich — Results of DNA testing have now identified a human foot found in July 2008 on a Lake Huron beach near Hammond Bay and a torso also found nearby in May 2008, police say. A Texas laboratory that handles DNA identification cases from around the world has positively identified the remains found two years ago as those of Dillon Kent Herzer, a missing sailor who disappeared in July 1999 on his way back to St. Clair, Mich., from the 1999 Port Huron-to-Mackinac Yacht Race. |
