A series of skeletal remains found in the past seven years in Kankakee and southern Will counties don't appear connected to the latest set of remains discovered in April in Sun River Terrace, a detective said Thursday.

Kankakee County Sheriff's Detective Brady Bertrand said investigators do not believe that the remains found April 1 near Sunset Lane in Sun River Terrace by a man walking his dog are linked to those of three other people, found since late October 2002.

Police believe the Sun River Terrace bones belonged to a Hispanic man, likely 35 to 55 years old at the time of his death. The skeletal remains partially were obscured by brush along Sunset Lane, Detective Brady Bertrand said Thursday afternoon. Police believe he may have gone missing in late summer or early fall of 2008, he said.

Police are investigating his death as a homicide.

The other cases also remain, largely, mysteries. The following people have not yet been identified:

* On May 20 of this year, partial remains were discovered in the Des Plaines River near Channahon, just west of Interstate 55. The remains, which lacked a head and arms, were found by a crew working in the area.

About a week later, they were identified as belonging to a man. Found with him were shreds of jeans and a small amount of cash.

* Dismembered human remains were found May 23, 2008, near St. Anne. At about 1 p.m. that day, a resident reported to police that a dog carried a pair of arms into the front yard of a house near 355 S. Route 1.

After searching farm fields and a nearby stream, detectives found about 90 percent of this body, Kankakee County Coroner Bob Gessner told The Daily Journal at the time.

* The skeletal remains of a black woman were found around Halloween 2002 near Illinois Route 45, close to the Kankakee/Will County line, according to the sheriff's office. The woman was about 5 feet, 3 inches tall and approximately 30 to 40 years old at the time of her death.

Investigators think she died in 2001.

It's taken 27 months but Kankakee
sheriff's police now know who's body was found in Sun River Terrace and that he died as the result of a homicide.

Ray J. Acklin, who lived in Chicago, would have been 43 April 1, 2009, the day his body was found in a weedy patch near Sunset Lane, according to Kankakee County Coroner Bob Gessner. Acklin had been missing for more than three years.
