Police hope items lead to clues in identifying body found near Lake Wylie
John Marks STEELE CREEK --

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has released photographs of a shirt and pocket knife found next to human skeletal remains found Feb. 22 the 1600 block of Strollaway Road near Lake Wylie.

The human skeletal remains were found at 4:18 p.m. At that time, detectives were unable to determine race, age or length of time the body was in the woods. Detectives began working with the CMPD Missing Persons Unit to identify the remains.

A pair of Wrangler jeans, a black woven belt, a pair of men’s sized Puritan brand underwear, a white Fruit of the Loom tank top and a No Boundaries black long-sleeved shirt were found at the scene. The shirt shows a lion’s head wearing a crown, and inside the jeans were a Seneca brand cigarette pack, a blue lighter and a “uniquely-colored pocket knife” of yellow, red and silver. The knife had a cross emblem in red along with a pictured motorcycle on both sides.

“Due to decomposition, race has not been determined, however, there were some distinct clothing items that appear to belong to a male,” according to a police news release.

Anyone with information in the case should call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or CMPD at 704-432-8477

olice ID body found by Buster Boyd Bridge

Posted: Wednesday, Mar. 03, 2010

Police have identified a man whose skeletal remains were found in the woods near the Buster Boyd Bridge last month.

Officers say the man was Keith Raymond Whitworth, 47, who was reported missing in Gastonia on Dec. 2, nearly three months before the remains were found.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say they've notified Whitworth's family of his death, and are investigating the case as a homicide. The department is working with the Gastonia Police Department on the investigation.

Investigators were called to the 1600 block of Strollaway Road, near York Road, shortly after 4 p.m. on Feb. 22, when someone stumbled across the remains.

Officers initially were unable to determine the age or race of the victim, and didn't know how long the body had been in the woods.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or Detective T. Brandon at 704-432-TIPS.
