PASSAIC — A DNA match and an estranged wife’s recognition of a tattoo have helped police identify a homicide victim whose body was found on a Passaic River bank in 2008, police said.

Police released the man’s identity, Mieczyslaw Zajac, on Friday. He was 48 when employees of Atlantic Coast Fibers, a recycling business at 107 Seventh St., found his body on the river bank behind the building about 5 p.m. on July 21, 2008.

Zajac’s estranged wife came into police headquarters after seeing a photo of the tattoo in a news story, just about the same time a state police forensic lab database got a DNA match. Investigators matched DNA from the man’s teeth to a sample taken during an earlier conviction, said Detective Andrew White.

The woman recognized the tattoo, which read Zynia, her estranged husband’s nickname for her, from a photo release by police in November asking for help identifying the man’s remains. Now police again are asking for the public’s help in finding out what led to Zajac’s death, which has been ruled a homicide, White said.

Zajac’s body was badly decomposed and had multiple traumatic injuries. Authorities believe the body lay on the banks of the river for about a week before it was discovered. The medical examiner declared his death a homicide in 2008, and police had been trying to determine his identity since then.

Zajac and his wife had separated and he became homeless and living on the river bank, where many homeless people congregate, some of whom are of Polish descent like Zajac. His estranged wife, with whom he had a daughter, had not seen him in three years and reported him missing last year after she had not heard from him or seen him around town, White said.

Police ask anyone who knew Zajac, saw him or knows what happened to him to call Detective Marvin Eugene at 973-365-3922.
