Officers were called to a wooded area behind the Ollie's Discount Store in the 8100 block of Ritchie Highway in Pasadena at 2:47 p.m. Monday. A person told police he was walking into the wood line when he discovered what appeared to be a human skull. Delivery man Alan Watson described the scene after the discovery was made. "There were about half a dozen, maybe eight police law enforcement vehicles along the side of the road on the right, and one was a CSI unit, and a bunch of unmarked cop cars," Watson said. Members of the Anne Arundel County Police Department’s homicide unit and criminal investigation division, along with volunteers using cadaver dogs from the Chesapeake Search Dogs and the Mason Dixon Search and Rescue Dogs Inc., formed a search team to find additional human remains. After an extensive search, a body was recovered from a wooded area, police said. Authorities said they are now tasked with identifying the person and finding out whether they were killed. "We're going to be working close with the Medical Examiner's Office to determine race and gender. Right now, it's just an unidentified person and ultimately, they will determine the final cause and manner of death, and that may take some time," Anne Arundel County police spokesman Justin Mulcahy said. Police said they are also looking into a number of missing person's cases to assist with the identification process. "(We will) look through previous cases of missing persons in the database for any information, work with other law enforcement agencies that may have missing persons cases and pursue every avenue," Mulcahy said. http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/crime/...1849_story.html Skeletal remains found in Anne Arundel County belonged to young woman, police say Text Size PrintE-mailReprintsBy Peter Hermann, Published: August 9The Washington Post The head and skeletal remains found behind an Anne Arundel County bargain store on Monday are those of a young woman who was killed with blows to the upper body, according to police. Authorities have ruled the death a homicide. Few other details, including the woman’s identity, are known, and police said they are using dental records and DNA to try to learn who she was. Police said that the remains had been behind the store for at least several months. 4 Comments Weigh InCorrections?Recommend Tweet Personal Post More crime and safety news Body pulled from Potomac River Matt Zapotosky 11:11 AM ET A boater spotted the body in the river near Edwards Ferry. Justin Mulcahy, a spokesman for the Anne Arundel County Police Department, said the remains “do not appear to be matching up with any of our missing persons.” The department lists six open missing-persons cases in the county, one dating to 1976. The most recent is Jessica Lynn Lee, a 20-year-old last seen May 8 at a Shoppers Food store in the 5700 block of Ritchie Highway in Brooklyn Park, in northern Anne Arundel near the Baltimore City line. She is described as a white woman with blond hair standing 5-foot-8 and weighing about 127 pounds. Mulcahy said that on Thursday, police officers were back at the scene where the remains were found, in the 8100 block of Ritchie Highway in Pasadena. “Now we’re trying to look for additional witnesses or evidence,” he said. “Certainly it’s difficult when dealing with remains. We’re not ruling anything out yet.” A man walking near Ollie’s Bargain Outlet found the skull shortly before 3 p.m. Monday. Police searched the area with cadaver dogs from Chesapeake Search Dogs and Mason-Dixon Rescue Dogs and found more remains in the woods “a good distance away,” Mulcahy said. Authorities would not say how much of the skeleton, or whether any other evidence, was found. Maryland’s chief medical examiner, David R. Fowler, would not comment specifically on the case but said his office uses anthropologists with PhDs to examine human remains. Approximate age, sex and height can be determined by measuring the leg and pelvis, which differ in men and women. Joints age and wear differently in the sexes, for example. Fowler also said that dental records, which police routinely collect after a person is reported missing, can be checked in at least two national databases. Police and other authorities said that discoveries of human remains are unusual. But it’s the second such find in two days in Maryland. On Wednesday afternoon, the Frederick County Sheriff’s Department said a tree trimmer found skeletal remains 10 to 15 yards off the 4100 block of New Design Road in rural Western Maryland. |

Officials are working to identify the woman, who they say was approximately 18 to 20 years old, but preliminarily have ruled her death a homicide. They say she died from trauma to the upper body. The woman is believed to have been dead for “at least a few months,” county police spokesman Justin Mulcahy said. A person walking in a wooded area behind Ollie’s Bargain Outlet, in the 8100 block of Ritchie Highway, discovered a human skull Monday and reported it to police. Investigators conducted a search of the area using cadaver dogs and located remaining body parts a short distance away, Mr. Mulcahy said. Maryland’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, which conducted the autopsy, described the woman as white, 5-feet-6-inches tall, with brown hair. The woman’s description does not match any missing persons reports filed in Anne Arundel County so the police department is reaching out to other surrounding jurisdictions in hopes of identifying the woman, Mr. Mulcahy said. |

http://www.wbal.com/article/92858/2/templa...n-Remains-Case- More Clues Revealed In Human Remains Case Thursday, August 09, 2012 Steve Fermier Police in Anne Arundel County know a little more about the human remains found behind an Ollie's Outlet in Pasadena earlier this week. Investigators say the remains were from a white woman, between 18 and 20 years old, five feet six inches tall, and with brown hair. But other clues were less obvious. She apparently died as a result of severe injury to the upper body, and the case is being labeled a homicide. A man walking through a partly wooded area near the shopping center on Ritchie Highway on Monday afternoon found a human skull. Investigators later found other parts of the body not far away. Police are urging anyone with possible leads to contact them at Anne Arundel County Police Department. |

Anne Arundel homicide victim identified as woman, 20, missing since May Body of Jessica Lynn Lee, found in woods in Pasadena The body of Jessica Lee Lynn, 20, of Brooklyn Park was found in… (Photo provided by Anne Arundel…)August 17, 2012|By Tricia Bishop, The Baltimore Sun A few days before Mother’s Day, 20-year-old Jessica Lynn Lee got into an argument with her mother about caring for Lee’s baby and took off. It was a familiar, if infrequent, scene between them. They would fight over small stuff — using the computer, following house rules — and Lee would leave. She always came home to Brooklyn Park a few days later, though, sometimes spending the night in the woods near her house or with whomever she met along the way, while her mother cared for infant Maygan. But this time was different. Lee never came home. On Friday, Anne Arundel County police identified the decapitated remains found behind a Pasadena shopping center earlier this month as those of Jessica Lee. The news stunned her mother, Ann Burke. “I was keeping hope; now my hope’s gone,” she said, her voice breaking. “We don’t know what happened. It’s a homicide investigation now.” A man who had been walking into the woods behind Ollie’s Bargain Outlet on the 8100 block of Ritchie Highway called police Aug. 6 after discovering a human skull. Authorities organized a search team and brought in cadaver dogs to look for the rest of the body, recovered in the woods after an “extensive search,” police said in a statement. The office of the chief medical examiner preliminarily ruled the death a homicide due to “trauma to the upper body,” police said. Crime lab workers identified the remains as Lee’s through a DNA comparison and informed her family Friday morning. Burke and her parents, who share a house, were still processing the information when news media began calling that afternoon. Burke had reported her daughter missing more than three months ago, after Lee failed to call following the May 8 argument. “She always calls me; no matter where my daughter goes, she calls me,” Burke said. Sometimes, she’d borrow a stranger’s cellphone to do it, said her grandmother, Barbara Burke, sitting at the family dining table Friday. Lee was constantly using up her minutes as soon as she got them, and would have to go without each month until a new supplemental security income check came. Lee was diagnosed with a developmental disability in school, her mother said, and operated at a 14-year-old’s level. The women described Lee as friendly to a fault. “Jessica was a kind, loving person — she trusted everybody,” her grandmother said. She talked to everyone, she said, and brought home strays — both pets and people. “She was very lovable, she just wanted to be accepted,” Ann Burke said. When Lee went missing, her family launched a search on their own while police investigated, combing through the woods and going to Lee’s favorite places — Marley Station Mall, the library and even the Glen Burnie Carnival, which opened for a week in late July. “Any carnival that came to town, she always went,” said Burke, who brought a North County High School photo of her blond-haired, blue-eyed daughter to the fair, hoping someone would recognize the young woman. But she got few leads, and police haven’t told her much, she said. She doesn’t yet know when Lee died or how the investigation is proceeding. A police spokesman said Friday that he had no further information. Ann Burke is now caring for Maygan, 16 months, full time. “They took my daughter from me and her mom from her,” she said, urging anyone with information to contact police. “I’m just trying to find out who did this and bring him to justice,” Ann Burke said. “She don’t do nothing to anybody. She’s a happy-go-lucky kid. I don’t understand why they would hurt her.” http://articles.baltimoresun.com/2012-08-1...ion-jessica-lee |
