The Tuskagee News Thursday, January 20, 1977 SKELETAL REMAINS UNIDENTIFIED The decomosed body of a man, found near I-85 on Wire Road in Macon County has not been identified by the State Toxicology Laboratory at Auburn University, according to Macon County officials. Chief Deputy Richard Coleman, Macon County Sheriff's Office, says the lab is checking dental markings as a last resort to find out the identity of the man. He said the man may have died 16 months ago. No positive identification had been made as of Monday. Coleman, the second officer on the scene after the body was found by an Auburn police officer about 8:40 a.m. Friday said that so far there was no evidence of foul play. The skeletal remains were positioned in such a way that we are led to believe the man was sitting under a tree about 103 feet from the roadway when he died. "There were no markings on the bones to indicate a blow to the body or a gunshot, nor was there any blood found on the clothes," Coleman said. He speculated that the man was possibly bitten by a snake or had a heart attack while sitting under the tree, maybe waiting for a ride, Coleman added "But we can't tell for sure." The deputy said he hoped the toxicology lab would have a positive identification by the beginning of the week. Coleman said the man was wearing a greyish pullover sweater with a round collar and three-fourth length sleeves, blue jean type pants with pockets in the front only, and brown shoes with blue socks. He said the shoes had white paint on them. None of the pockets of the man's clothing contained anything, a point Coleman said would lead to the conclusion of foul play, but again, no evidence gathered so far would confirm any such suspicions, the deputy said. Coleman said the Macon County Sheriff's Office had received two calls Saturday from relatives of missing persons. In one case, he said, the missing man showed up shortly after his brother's inquiry. The man had been missing for about a year. In the other case, the connection did not check out, he said. A possibility that the dead man was a Virginia reported missing last April was a "great possibility" according to Sheriff Lucius Amerson, Friday. The sheriff said the Virginia man was reported missing from a point about six miles from the place the remains were found. |
