Investigation Continues into Human Remains Found Near Hot Springs

Forensic teams with the FBI are wrapping up their investigation
after human remains were discovered in Hot Springs Sunday morning.
FBI agents were back on the scene Tuesday morning, but have yet to
say for sure if the remains are those of a male or female.

The remains were found near Mountain Top Trail on West Mountain,
which is part of the national park. A purse, some clothing and a
tennis shoe were visible--just a few simple clues to help
investigators piece together what may have happened.

A local jogger made the gruesome discovery, and called authorities.

(Louis Witherspoon, Found Remains) "As I made a couple of laps
around the mountain, I saw a cat coming through here so I followed
the cat, wondering where it was going. It lead me right here. As I
got over there, I looked down and saw some bones."

An FBI spokesperson says forensic teams are trying to determine if,
in fact, a crime has been committed.

New Tools Could Help Identify Garland County Remains

It's been one week since human remains were found in Hot Springs
National Park, and authorities have still not been able to identify
the person.

Investigation Continues into Human Remains Found Near Hot Springs
And that's not the only case of unidentified remains in Arkansas.

In January of 2000, hunters found a skull floating in a swamp in
northern Pulaski County. Eight years later, authorities still have
not made a positive identification in the case.

It's one of two cold cases involving unidentified remains the
Pulaski County Sheriff's Office has open.

(Capt. Kirk Lane, Pulaski County Sheriff's Office) "I think the
biggest problem is there are a lot of agencies not only in Arkansas
but around the United States that don't report unidentified
information and use the databases that are available."

Right now there are about 20 unidentified skeletal remains at the
state crime lab, and according to a Department of Justice report
released last month, there were around 36 cases in Arkansas reported
to the Centers for Disease Control between 1980 and 2004.

(Lt. Terry Hastings, LRPD) "A lot of times it's hard to tell how
they died. They may have been murdered but because of just being
bones you can't tell how they died. Unless we can prove it's a
homicide then it just becomes an undetermined death, so someone may
get away with murder and that's the sad thing about it."

The state medical examiner says there is now a push to use new DNA
technologies, and put that information into a central database.

(Dr. Charles Kokes, State Medical Examiner) "With the technology out
there today, if the bones are in pretty good condition you stand a
reasonable chance of recovering DNA information."

The National Death Index is a central computerized database of all
death records in the U.S. that investigators can use, but it is not
accessible to the general public.
