http://www.modbee.com/2012/02/26/2086147/s...pe-for-new.html Local - Around the valley Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012 Sacramento police hope for new lead in 32-year-old homicide By Kim Minugh Sacramento police know a lot about this mysterious man – his dental work, his previous struggle with obesity, his recent appendectomy – just not his name. Thirty-two years after Sacramento police found a man shot to death at a softball diamond in O'Neil Park, detectives are still trying to figure out who their victim is. They are hoping that the clues they have – his clothing, his medical history – might trigger someone's memory and re-energize the long-cold case. "It's always important we get justice for victims of any crime," said Officer Laura Peck, a police spokeswoman. "It doesn't matter if it's a day old or 32 years old. It's important we get justice for this man." At 9:15 p.m. on Jan. 17, 1980, Sacramento police received an anonymous tip reporting that a man was injured at 6th and X streets. They arrived to find a man fatally shot, still propped up in the bleachers next to a softball field in the park. A Bee report from the time said he had been shot in the head. The man carried no identification, and more than three decades later, his identity remains a mystery. He was in his 20s, 5 feet 9 inches tall and believed to be white or Hispanic. He weighed 147 pounds at the time of his death; however, stretch marks led police to believe he had lost a "significant" amount of weight. He had brown hair, brown eyes and a moustache and goatee. He wore a blue denim cap with a short bill; a "LeChevron Collection" jacket; a long-sleeved, navy blue "Sigallo" sweater with a gray collar; prescription eyeglasses; blue jeans; and royal blue Adidas tennis shoes with yellow stripes, size 9. Inside the shoes, the letters "HS" are scrawled in ink, though police are not sure whether those are the man's initials. An autopsy revealed his appendix had been removed. He had a partial denture plate on his front upper incisors, and his upper four front teeth were false. A pack of Salem cigarettes and a lighter found next to his body suggested he was a smoker. Also found next to him was a Burger King cup that detectives traced to a fast-food joint inside the old Greyhound bus station, then at 7th and L streets. Employees remembered selling the man the drink about 8 p.m. the night of his death. Detectives uploaded his DNA into databases, but received no hits. They scoured missing person lists, too, with no luck. Police believe he might have recently arrived by bus from the Los Angeles area, as one witness indicated, and police now are hoping someone from that region might remember him. "In a case like this, it's a long shot. It's 32 years old," Peck said. "But that's a lot of information." Anyone with information about this man's identity or his killing is asked to call the dispatch center at (916) 264-5471 or Crime Alert at (916) 443-HELP or text "SACTIP" and the information to 274637. Callers can remain anonymous and might be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
