WASHINGTON — U.S. Park Police are asking for the public's help in identifying skeletal remains found under the Roosevelt Bridge in 2003.

A forensic anthropologist determined that they are the remains of a black male, 30 to 39 years old, 5'7" to 5'8" tall. Authorities say the man had an unusual bony growth on the upper left side of his mouth that probably impaired his speech.

Authorities say the man was probably homeless and probably died about six months before his remains were found. A cause of death has not been determined.

Anyone with information should contact Park Police Detective Kevin Fornshill at (202) 610-8751.

U.S. Park Police are asking for help identifying a man whose remains were found under the Teddy Roosevelt Bridge in 2003.

Investigators believe the man, who was likely homeless, died in the summer of 2002. The medical examiner was unable to determine the cause of death.

A forensic anthropologist determined the remains are of a 30 to 39-year-old black male, who was between five feet seven inches and five feet eight inches tall. The anthropologist also noticed an an unusual bony growth on the upper left side of the man's mouth, which would have given him the appearance of a swollen cheek or face.

He also likely would have had difficulty speaking or eating.

Investigators released a sketch of what the man may have looked like. Anyone with information is asked to call U.S. Park Police Det. Kevin Fornshill at (202) 610-8751.

Retiring detective hopes for ID in cold case
Nov 12, 2010 12:21pm

WASHINGTON (AP) — A detective trying to identify the remains of a homeless man found under the Roosevelt Bridge in 2003 doesn't have much to go on. The man wore size nine running shoes, and when he died, he had a Chicago White Sox cap and $18.30 to his name. Most tellingly, he had a growth in his mouth that would have made it hard for him to talk or eat.

Still, no leads in the case have panned out. On Friday, the U.S. Park Police again asked for the public's help in trying to identify the man, who was black and in his 30s.

"This guy is a family of somebody, so it's one last effort to try and identify who he is," said Detective Kevin Fornshill, who has been working on the case since 2003.

Fornshill, a 23-year veteran of the department, is retiring in April and said he would like to close the case before he leaves. He has spent months trying to track down the man's identity, visiting homeless shelters and following up on leads of similar missing persons reported as far away as California and Canada. The man is also part of the National Center for Missing Adults database — Virginia's John Doe No. 0023. But Fornshill said the last time he got a lead in the case was 2007.

The most distinctive thing about the man is the growth in his mouth, which Fornshill described as being like a "spiky golf ball." It would have made his cheek or face look swollen.

Anyone with information is asked to call Fornshill at (202) 610-8751.
