Unsolved Homicides![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reconstructed Image of Victim Unidentified Female Located on February 15, 1991 in Big Coppitt Key, Florida. Cause of death was homicide; the victim had been strangled. Estimated age: 16 - 25 years old Approximate Height and Weight: 5'4"; 145 lbs. Distinguishing Characteristics: She had dark brown straight hair cut just above the collar and brown eyes. She was a non-smoker. The victim's ears were pierced four times each. The victim may have carried a baby to full-term. She was suffering from ovarian and fallopian tube cysts, which may have been causing her abdominal pain. Dentals: She had excellent dental care and records are available. Tattoos: She had two tattoos; one, was the word "Love" encircled by a heart. The other tattoo was a cross with sun rays emitting from the center. It was located between the thumb and forefinger of her left hand. Clothing: The victim's clothes were found near her body. It was a blue and red-striped Forenza sweater; Big Yank blue denim shorts; and black Clicks' moccasin-style booties with red stitching, Click brand, size 6 1/2B. Sold by Baker Shoes in 1989. Jewellry: She wore a Times watch with silver band on the right arm and had Four cheap costume jewelry earrings in each ear. Case History Florida Jane Doe's body and clothing was found in a dense wooded area. Her nude body was found February 15 near a frequently used illegal campground on West Summerland Key, just south of the Bahia Honda Channel Bridge. For over a decade, police in the Florida Keys have been trying to solve a mystery -- a mystery involving a young girl. Sadly, this girl is only known as Florida Jane Doe. After all these years, detectives are still unable to find out who she is and what happened to her. The case began on February 15, 1991. Windsurfers camping in the area near Bahia Honda State Recreation area, located near mile marker 35 on US 1 in the Florida Keys, made the gruesome discovery of a young dead girl. Her body was laying on a dirt trail in a heavily wooded area. Police say the victim was a white female girl about 15 to 20 years old, who was beaten and strangled to death with her bikini top. Her face was bruised by a beating, apparently when she was killed. Investigators believe the victim was raped, but that has not been proved. An autopsy determined Florida Jane Doe had been killed the day before on Valentine's Day. Monroe County Sheriff's Office opened up a homicide investigation. First, they needed to identify the body. They had few clues to go on but they hoped one item would jog someone's memory. The girl was wearing a knitted, long-sleeved sweater with wide red, black and purple horizontal stripes; long knee length denim shorts; and black ankle-high Indian-moccasin booties with red stitching. Florida Jane Doe also has two tattoos including a large heart with the word "Love" in the middle of it on her upper left arm. The other tattoo is a cross with radiating lines of line behind it in the web of her left hand. The girl weighed about 145 pounds, had brown eyes and straight, collar-length dark brown hair. An autopsy indicated she had taken good care of her teeth and around age ten she had a molar extracted. She was seen by another eyewitness at mile marker 15 and around 6:30 that night at mile marker 17. That was the last sighting of the mystery girl. Detectives got tips early on and learned that Florida Jane Doe had been seen by motorists hitchhiking along US 1 in the Keys. Because of her clothing especially a sweater and moccasins, she stood out. Based on the information, police determined on Valentine's Day the girl was in Key West and walked northbound on US 1 on Big Coppitt Key, about ten miles north of Key West. She was seen by another eyewitness at mile marker 15 and around 6:30 that night at mile marker 17. That was the last sighting of the mystery girl. In 1993, police attempted to put a face to this unknown girl by creating a computerized photo of what Florida Jane Doe may look like. To this day, police have no information indicating where this girl is from or who she is, therefore, detectives are unable to solve this horrific murder. Detectives are asking again for people all over the country to take a look at the computerized photo, the clothes and the tattoos. One small tip could give them the answers they need to solve this case. If you have any information concerning the identity of this woman or the circumstances surrounding her homicide, please contact: Monroe County Sheriff's Department 305-289-2410 http://www.fdle.state.fl.us/Content/Office...ne-Doe-(2).aspx |

Police again seek public's help in murder from 16 years ago The mystery surrounding a Monroe County homicide, including the young victim's identity, lingers 16 years later. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Monroe County Sheriff's Office this week again asked for the public's help. They victim likely was between 16 and 25 years old, about 5-feet-4 and 145 pounds. She had brown eyes and collar-length straight, dark brown hair and four piercings in each ear. With "Love" tattooed on her left arm and a cross tattoo on her left hand, she was found dead Feb. 15, 1991, in a wooded area a day or two after her killer strangled her with her bikini top. Anyone with information can call FDLE Special Agent Dennis Haley at 305-292-6705 or Sheriff's Detective Terry Smith at 305-289-2410. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/bro...la-news-broward |

http://www1.wsvn.com/features/articles/justice/MI45879 Two Jane Does Two women found dead, years apart, within yards of each other. To this date, police don't know who they are or who killed them. Seven's Patrick Fraser spoke with Monroe County sheriff's deputies who are Out for Justice. Reported by: Patrick Fraser Contact pfraser@wsvn.com View all archived Out for Justice reports WSVN -- Detective Terry Smith, Monroe County Sheriff's Department: "She was found right at the end of the road." When you are a cold case detective, you usually search for the killer; seldom do you have to search for the victims as well. Detective Terry Smith: "We know very little about her. We don't know where she's from. We don't have a name." Today, Terry Smith and Mark Coleman are trying to solve two separate cases in the Florida Keys -- not to find two killers, but to identify two victims found near Big Pine Key, found yards from each other years apart. Detective Terry Smith: "We called her 'Valentine.'" Since she was probably murdered on Valentine's Day in 1991, she is now know as Jane Doe Valentine -- left naked, brutally beaten and strangled with her own bikini top. Detective Terry Smith: "The only thing that we know is that she was in her late teens to early twenties. Possibility that she carried a child a full term." And Jane Doe Valentine was probably not from the Keys. Detective Terry Smith: "Her clothing was not typical of someone who was from South Florida, and she did not have any tan lines at all." Another indication she was visiting: She didn't wear tennis shoes or sandals. Detective Terry Smith: "She was wearing black moccasins that had some bead work on them, some turquoise-style bead work." Detectives could not find anyone who knew the woman, but they did find one person who remembered seeing her. Detective Terry Smith: "The detectives back in '91 were able to find a witness that recognized her as being someone he had seen hitchhiking." Few clues but now new hope as technology has allowed artists to create a more accurate likeness of her. "She looks a little harder in this picture, a little more street-wise -- and, with her being a hitchhiker, it probably is a little more representative of what she actually did look like in life." And just like Jane Doe Valentine, this Jane Doe died in the same area, 13 years earlier. Detective Mark Coleman, Monroe County Sheriff's Department: "To this date, she's been unidentified. We don't have any idea who she is or where she came from." The year was 1979, and, that day, the tide brought in more than seaweed. Detective Mark Coleman: "She was found washed up on a rocky shore line, south end of Bahia Honda Bridge." A young healthy female, dead, face down in a tidal pool. Detective Mark Coleman: "She had been in the water for several hours, and there was no real trauma." It's possible she just drowned while out swimming, but not likely. She was wearing jeans, and no one ever reported her missing. Detective Mark Coleman: "She could have been somebody that was visiting with someone else. Something happened. Something went bad, and this is the end result." Another young woman with no identity and no clues to her killer. Detective Mark Coleman: "Someone out there knows something." And that pushes the cold case detectives, who are reminded of the two women dying so close together each time they drive by this spot on U.S. 1. Detective Mark Coleman: "We'd like to see some closure. At least, that way, we know that there's some family out there somewhere who's wondering what happened to their loved-one." Somewhere a mother, a father, a brother or sister is wondering whatever happened to a young woman. Detective Mark Coleman: "It will be good to contact them and let them know: 'Hey, this is what happened, and this is where they were.'" And now that the years have passed, detectives are hoping that someone who knew something then will say something now. Detective Mark Coleman: "Their attitude may be different nowadays, and they may come forward and tell us something. I think it would be the right thing to do, especially for the family/loved-ones of the victim." A long time has passed since the two women died -- two women who need to be identified and two killers who need to be caught. If you think you know anything that might help police call Crime Stoppers.
