** WARNING: POST-MORTEM PHOTO AT SITE BELOW ** ** WARNING: POST-MORTEM ** http://www.suburbanchicagonews.com/heraldn...-100427.article ** WARNING: POST-MORTEM ** Who is this man? April 27, 2010 By BRIAN STANLEY JOLIET -- It's been more than 25 years, but the Will County coroner's Cold Case Squad hopes someone recognizes "The Man From the Woods." His body was found Dec. 2, 1984, in a wooded area near Gougar Road and Route 6 in New Lenox Township. The black man was around 75 years old, 5-foot-9 and weighed less than 100 pounds. "The Man From the Woods" was found Dec. 2, 1984. Authorities say he is approximately 75 years old, stood about 5 feet 9 inches, and weighed less than 100 pounds. Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the Will County coroner's office at 815-727-8455. The man died of natural causes, but investigation by the Will County police and coroner's office found the body may have been moved into the bushes. He was wearing a green, white and gold cardigan over a long-sleeved yellow shirt, Black Jack blue jeans, underwear and white socks with a red band on the top. A gray knee-length topcoat and pair of canvas shoes were found near his body. The man's fingernails were neatly clipped, but most of his teeth had been lost before he died. Police weren't able to identify the body or find a missing-person report that matched The Man From the Woods. He was buried in Mount Vernon Cemetery in Lemont. Coroner's investigators Last year, retired sheriff's Deputy Jim Cardin and retired Romeoville Officer Gene Sullivan were hired as part-time investigators by Coroner Patrick K. O'Neil. Their assignment has been working to identify the 10 "John and Jane Does" who remain unknown. With cases that date back to as far as 1968 to as recently as last year, Cardin and Sullivan have tried to find out as much as they can. Some of the unknowns were complete bodies discovered long before modern forensics. Others are only fragments of bones and clothing. "'The Man From the Woods' happened before the DNA revolution, so we just had a little bit of hair to work with," Sullivan said. The hair was sent to the University of North Texas for DNA extraction. "But those results routinely take about a year because of the backlog and these are not high-priority cases," Sullivan said. "They may call and say they'd need more material, and we'd have to have the body exhumed." The cold casers have also reviewed old missing persons reports. "We had a few comeback as hits on a guy who disappeared from Kankakee County," Cardin said. "That report had a picture from a birthday with a set of Care Bears in the background. I spent more time looking into the manufacturing dates of Care Bears than I ever expected to." But the man missing from Kankakee isn't "The Man From the Woods." More research found the missing man was issued identification after the unidentified body was found in New Lenox. Searching for answers Even if the DNA can be profiled and is put into national databases, it's unlikely there will be a match. "So we're putting the case out to the public to see if someone might recognize who this is," Cardin said. "Even though a long time has passed, we have to try." Anyone who can provide information is asked to call the coroner's office at 815-727-8455. Information can be submitted anonymously. |
