Video Property Owner Discovers Bones The property's owner, John Wardlaw, who is preparing to build a home on the site a few miles southeast of Spencer, found a skull there early this week or late last week, Indiana State Police Trooper Jackie Taylor said. The discovery was reported to police Tuesday. "I didn't realize what it was. I mean, I just didn't register the significance of it for a few seconds," Wardlaw said. "I turned around and staked it with a ribbon, and said, 'I'd better tell the police.' " A forensic anthropology team from the University of Indianapolis examined the scene and found several other bones near the skull, Taylor said. The bones were determined to be human. The remains were taken to the university for further examination Thursday afternoon. Taylor said the bones appeared to have been in the field "for some time," but a more precise time estimate wasn't available Thursday afternoon. The sex and age of the person to whom the bones belonged may be known next week, Taylor said. "I know a lot of people that have missing children, missing brothers and sisters, whatever, will be concerned or think it might be a possibility it might be theirs. But until then, we wont know a thing," Taylor said. Taylor said she believed the bones had not been buried and termed the case a death investigation. The Owen County Sheriff's Department and a detective for the Owen County prosecutor also were investigating, Taylor said. Spencer is about 40 miles southwest of Indianapolis. Police still are trying to determine who the woman was. The bones were found by a man who was preparing to build a home on the site. Police said the bones, which were examined by forensic anthropologists at the University of Indianapolis, may have been on the property for between 18 months and three years. The woman appears to have been about 5 feet 5 inches tall. She had a broken nose that healed crooked, police said. Spencer is about 40 miles southwest of Indianapolis. Anyone with information about the bones can call the Indiana State Police at (800) 432-1286. Dr. Stephen Nawrocki of the University of Indianapolis also concluded in his preliminary findings that the woman stood about 5-foot-5 and was between the age of 30 and 45. The skeletal remains were found Oct. 14 in a wooded area of Owen County south of Spencer in southwestern Indiana by the property's owner. Nawrocki, who examined the remains for Indiana State Police, believes the remains had been in that spot between 18 months and three years. His study gave police an additional clue that could prove significant: The woman had previously suffered a broken nose that had healed crooked. State police detectives continue to investigate the case, said Master Trooper Jackie Taylor. http://www.theindychannel.com/news/2608267/detail.html Police Wonder Whether Remains Are Richmond Woman's Female Missing Since 2001; Tests Could Take Months POSTED: 9:45 pm EST November 3, 2003 RICHMOND, Ind. -- Police say they're determining whether skeletal remains found last month in western Indiana are those of a missing Richmond woman. Video Tests Could Take Months Police said features of the remains -- including an apparent broken nose that had healed -- may fit the description of Niqui McCown (pictured, left), who disappeared in 2001. "It's all speculation. We don't really know anything for sure," Richmond police Capt. Danny McClure told RTV6's Sy Jenkins Monday. The bones were found in a wooded area near Spencer -- about 90 miles southwest of Richmond -- by a man who was preparing to build a home on the site, according to state police. Police said the bones, which were examined by a forensic anthropologist at the University of Indianapolis, may have been on the property for between 18 months and three years. McCown disappeared after going to a Richmond laundromat in July 2001. Police found her truck -- with laundry inside -- abandoned several months later in Dayton, Ohio. At the time of her disappearance, she had a 9-year-old daughter and was about to get married. Police said months could pass before tests show whether the bones are those of McCown. McCown's mother, Barbara McCown, told Jenkins she didn't think her daughter had broken her nose. Other members of the family, however, said Niqui McCown may have broken her nose in a fight several years ago. Anyone with information about the Spencer-area bones can call the Indiana State Police at (800) 432-1286. Copyright 2004 by TheIndyChannel.com All rights reserved.
