http://www.doenetwork.us/cases/174ufma.html Unidentified White Female Located on October 30, 1996 in New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts. Cause of death was homicide. The victim had been hit in the face and head and shot a dozen times. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Vital Statistics Estimated age: 30 - 45 years old Approximate Height and Weight: 5'2"; 127 lbs. Distinguishing Characteristics: Shoulder-length hair, dyed strawberry blonde within a month of her killing. Her natural color was light brown. Brown/hazel eyes. Though her ears were pierced, she wore no earrings. Her toenails were painted but her fingernails were not. Her hands were not callused. She didn't shave her legs or her armpits. She was well groomed. She was petite and looked european. Dentals: Available. She'd had some dental work done, fillings and root canals, most judged by a forensics expert to be too poor in quality to have been done in the United States. But one root canal, less than five years old, was done in US. Clothing: A mustard-color long-sleeve turtleneck, size medium, made by Licorice, under a white pullover sweater. The sweater had multi-colored rectangular designs. It was a size medium, brand name Oakbrook, probably bought mail-order a decade ago. Blue Levi's 521 jeans and black ankle High Lites high tie boots with chunky-style heels. Pantyhose, underwear and cotton socks. Jewelry: A gold ring with an emerald colored stone, with no inscription on her left ring finger. Experts say it comes from Belarus, part of the old Soviet Union. Fingerprints: Available AKA: "Popes Island Jane Doe" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Case History The victim was found floating off of Popes Island Marina in New Bedford, MA. Her body was found wrapped in two green garbage bags and a white and teal wool blanket, the kind common to fishing boats.. She was found by a maintenance worker at the Popes Island Marina. She was found at the marina within 24 hours of being dumped in the water and within 48 hours of being killed. Investigators believe the body might have been dumped in the water elsewhere, and that the current eventually pushed it to the dock. Copies of the woman's fingerprints was sent to the FBI and Interpol. She probably never had children. And there is no evidence of drug use. There was no sign of sexual assault. Investigators think things like the Russian ring, the unshaved legs, the poor dental work point to an immigrant from eastern Europe. The fact that checks of visas and immigration records of fingerprints and photos have turned up empty could mean an illegal immigrant. Ring worn by victim -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Investigators If you have any information concerning this case, please contact: New Bedford Police 508-991-6320 Agency Case Number: 96-20704 NCIC Number: N/A Please refer to this number when contacting any agency with information regarding this case. http://www.southcoasttoday.com/daily/10-96...96/a01lo002.htm Woman's body found in harbor Police seek identity of victim in trash bags By Maureen Boyle , and Natalie White Standard-Times staff writers NEW BEDFORD -- Investigators scrambled yesterday to identify the body of a woman found wrapped in trash bags and floating near the Popes Island Marina dock, hoping it would offer a clue to the killer. "That is one of the first steps," State Police Lt. Patrick Fitzgerald said. The slain woman -- discovered shortly before 8 a.m. yesterday -- was photographed and fingerprinted yesterday after her body was taken to Pocasset for a preliminary examination by the state's medical examiner. Police also showed the woman's photograph around the waterfront yesterday hoping someone would recognize her. Although investigators believe the woman suffered at least two separate types of potentially fatal injuries, the official cause of death has not been determined. The type of injuries were not released. An autopsy is to be completed today at the chief medical examiner's office in Boston. New Bedford Police Lt. Paul Desrosiers said, based on the preliminary examination, authorities believe the woman was in the water one or two days. Detectives searched missing persons reports yesterday to see if anyone matching the woman's description had been filed. Lt. Desrosiers said the dead woman was white, about 5 feet 1 inch tall, weighed 125 to 140 pounds and had medium-length strawberry-blonde hair. She was wearing blue jeans and a tan pullover multi-colored sweater. The woman -- described as being 45 to 50 years old -- was found near one of the slips at the marina yesterday by a maintenance worker. Jack Santos, the worker, said he was doing his routine morning check of the Popes Island Marina docks when he noticed what appeared to be a trash bag beneath Dock B, Bay 63 and leaned over to investigate. "I thought to myself, that looks like a body. I started screaming and yelling, 'Come here, come here,'" Mr. Santos said yesterday. Martin S. Manley, director of New Bedford's Harbor Development Commission which runs the marina, saw Mr. Santos waving his hands and running toward the main marina building. After learning of the discovery, Mr. Manley rushed back to the office and called 911 to alert police. Lt. Desrosiers said the dead woman was wrapped in two large, green garbage bags secured with what appeared to be either tape or wide streams of plastic. The body was also wrapped in a green and white blanket. The bulk of the woman's body -- including her head -- was covered when found., Lt. Desrosiers said. Although investigators believed from the onset that the body was that of a woman, it wasn't until she was unwrapped by the medical examiner that her gender was confirmed. Investigators said the body could have been dumped in the water elsewhere, with strong currents pushing it to the marina. The marina is gated and locked with only patrons provided keys. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Staff photo by Jack Iddon Sea water drips from a body bag as investigators remove the body of a woman found floating near the Popes Island marina yesterday. Police have not yet identified the woman, who police say is the victim of a homicide. |

http://www.southcoasttoday.com/daily/11-96...96/c01lo024.htm Murder victim's photo released Investigators find no leads in search for ID By Maureen Boyle, Standard-Times staff writer NEW BEDFORD -- With no clue to her identity, investigators struggling to learn who killed the woman found floating near a Popes Island dock hit a major roadblock yesterday and released a doctored coroner's photograph, hoping someone will recognize the victim. "You can't check up on where someone's been or who they were with until you know who they are," Detective Lt. Steven Forand said. "Someone, somewhere must be wondering where she is. Someone must be missing her." Investigators combed missing-persons reports, state fingerprint records in Massachusetts and Rhode Island and alerted the Federal Bureau of Investigation to find someone who matched the dead woman's description but, so far, have had no success. Copies of the woman's fingerprints have been sent to the FBI to see if they match anyone on file in the country. Teletype messages have been sent to other departments with the woman's description. "Our first step is finding who she is," State Police Sgt. Kevin Butler said. Investigators worked closely with a local camera store to doctor a photograph of the beaten woman's face -- eliminating some of the bruises and blood -- and released the picture. "We are losing ground when we are losing time," Lt. Forand said. "We want to identify her as soon as we can." Swift identification of the woman is needed to allow authorities to retrace the victim's steps, learn who she had been with and find what could be crucial evidence to convict the killer. Investigators also slightly altered the description of the victim, noting she might be far younger than the initial estimate of 40, and provided additional details about her clothing and jewelry. The woman might be 30 to 45 years old, 5 foot 2, and about 125 pounds. She had strawberry blonde, shoulder-length hair and hazel or brown eyes. She was wearing black, ankle-high tie shoes with chunky-style heels, blue jeans, and a brown jersey under a white pullover sweater. The sweater had multi-colored rectangular designs. Her toenails were painted. Sgt. Butler said the woman also wore a gold ring with an emerald-colored stone on her left ring finger. The woman's body was found wrapped in two green garbage bags and a blanket Wednesday morning by a maintenance worker at the Popes Island Marina. Authorities believe she had been dead just a few days. Investigators believe the body might have been dumped in the water elsewhere, and that the current eventually pushed it to the dock. The body -- still wrapped -- was initially taken to Pocassett for a preliminary examination, where authorities removed the bag and learned the victim was a woman. Lt. Forand said the body was later thoroughly examined at the state medical examiner's office in Boston Wednesday and yesterday for a variety of clues, including fibers. "They did a full forensic examination for evidence, nail scrapings, everything. You name it, they did it," Lt. Forand said. An autopsy was being done in Pocassett, where the body was returned, late yesterday by Dr. William Zane, the medical examiner. |

http://www.s-t.com/daily/11-96/11-02-96/a06lo036.htm (warning post-mortem on page) Dead woman's ID sought Police hope new pictures can trigger memories By Maureen Boyle, Standard-Times staff writer NEW BEDFORD -- Eyes closed in death, photographs of the strawberry blonde woman line the detective's desk. She is a face without a name, the unclaimed victim in Case No. 96-20704. "She has to have a family, she has to have friends, she has to have somebody out there," said New Bedford Capt. Antone Botelho Jr., head of the detective division. But three days after her beaten and bruised body -- wrapped in garbage bags and a blanket -- was found near a slip at Pope's Island Marina, state and local police know many things about the woman except the most important: who she is. "Without an identity, there is only so much you can do," said State Trooper Keith Blaney, one of the investigators. What authorities are doing in an unusual effort is to release photographs of the dead woman, hoping someone, somewhere, recognizes her. The first photograph, retouched on a computer to eliminate some of the facial bruising and swelling, failed to lead to her identity. "We got some calls but not as many as we would like," New Bedford Detective Sgt. Richard Ferreira said. But now, with the help of a mortician, authorities are hoping new photographs of the dead woman will shed some light on her identity. The color photographs of the woman -- less graphic than those released earlier -- as well as pictures of a ring she was wearing may help someone recognize the woman, authorities said. "We are doing everything possible to identify her," State Police Lt. Patrick Fitzgerald said. "We're hoping somebody will recognize her." What authorities know about the woman can fill a single page. She was found Wednesday morning in the water by dock B, bay 63 at Pope's Island Marina by a maintenance worker shortly before 8 a.m. She was covered with two green garbage bags and a blanket. She was killed by blunt force trauma and gunshots. She was 5-foot-2, weighed about 125 pounds. She had strawberry blonde, shoulder-length hair and hazel or brown eyes. She was wearing black, ankle-high tie shoes with chunky style heels, brand name "High Lights," size 6½. She had pierced ears. She wore Levi blue jeans and a brown jersey under a white pullover sweater. The sweater had multi-colored rectangular designs. She was wearing a ring with an emerald-colored stone on her left ring finger. Her toenails were painted. But what authorities know about the woman has not led to a name. State and New Bedford investigators checked fingerprint records in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, but failed to find a match. Fingerprints have been sent to New York, the FBI and a nationwide message has been sent out amid hopes that someone matching the woman's description has been reported missing. Detectives have fanned out throughout the area, showing photographs of the dead woman to a wide range of people -- from those in the soup kitchens to those in businesses. Some told police the woman looks vaguely familiar. No one knows her name. "We have done everything possible to identify her and haven't come up with anything yet," Police Lt. Fitzgerald said. And the search for the woman's identity -- and her killer -- continues. "She has to have family who want to provide a proper burial," Capt. Botelho said. http://www.southcoasttoday.com/daily/12-96...96/m01lo180.htm Perhaps the most eerie New Bedford area slaying occurred in October, when the body of an unidentified woman wrapped in trash bags was found floating near Popes Island Marina dock. About 30 years old, the white woman was 5 feet 2 inches tall and weighed about 125 pounds, police said. She suffered at least two separate types of potentially fatal injuries before her body turned up on Oct. 30. New Bedford police on Friday said the body still hasn't been identified and no suspects have been named. |
