OMSTOCK TOWNSHIP — Police are continuing to try to identify the skeletal remains of a woman found more than a month ago east of Kalamazoo, authorities said Thursday.

What they do know now, however, is that the remains are not those of Tammie Briley, Mary Lands or Venus Stewart, three local women who are missing and have yet to be found, Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Pali Matyas said.

Matyas said forensic pathologists were able to rule out the three women during an examination of the remains. He said authorities still believe that the remains are that of a white female between the ages of 35 and 55.
He said a cause and manner of death has yet to be determined.

“(The pathologists) continue to work on it when they can,” the undersheriff said. “They hope to have more information soon.”

Mary Lands

The remains were found April 28 in the 8400 block of East ML Avenue in Comstock Township when a caretaker stumbled upon bones on the property, which is in an area where there are patches of neighborhoods mixed in with farms and rural areas.

Briley, of Mattawan, was 37 when she was reported missing in September 2000. Her boyfriend told police Briley got out of his truck on I-94 near Battle Creek following an argument and left behind her purse.

Lands, of Marshall, was 39 when she disappeared in March 2004. She was declared dead in April by a Calhoun County Probate judge.

Stewart was 32 when she disappeared in April 2010 outside her parents' Colon Township home in St. Joseph County. Her estranged husband, Doug Stewart, 30, was convicted of her murder earlier this years and is serving a life sentence in a Michigan prison

COMSTOCK TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - The case of skeletal remains found in Kalamazoo County earlier this year is now a homicide investigation.

The bones were located on April 28 in a vacant lot in the 8400 block of E. ML Avenue in Comstock Township.

The victim's identity is not known, but police have ruled out Venus Stewart of Colon, Mary Lands of Marshall and Tammy Briley of Mattawan. These women are still missing.

Police said the victim is a white female, 35-55 years old and 5 feet 4 inches to 5 feet 8 inches tall. Biographical data of the remains is being placed in the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System, the National Crime Information Center and FBI Information System.

"The skeletal remains recovered by the Kalamazoo Forensic Laboratory were turned over to the Michigan State University Forensic Anthropology Laboratory for further study. Their analysis clearly indicated that the death was caused by blunt force trauma. Our investigation is now a homicide investigation," Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller said in a news release.

The sheriff's department is not releasing information about evidence in the case.

If you know more about this investigation, you are asked to call police at 269.383.8822 or Silent Observer at 269.343.2100.
