DESOTO COUNTY — Preliminary results from the State Crime Lab in Jackson show skeletal remains found last weekend in the Coldwater River bottoms are those of a black female.

DeSoto County Coroner Jeff Pounders said the results, which he received Friday afternoon, also estimated the woman’s age at between 30 and 50 and that her remains had been at the location for at least one year.

Scrap metal scavengers found the remains - that included a skull with some teeth, bones from the torso and several arm and leg bones - in a wooded area along Byhalia Road east of Hwy. 305 last Saturday morning.

However, the woman’s cause of death and identity has yet to be determined.

Sheriff’s Cmdr. Mark Blackson said a search of local missing persons reports and a cross-reference with information on the National Crime Information Center database have turned up no clues to her identity.

Blackson, who said investigators are looking into case as a homicide, encouraged anyone with information about the remains to call DeSoto County Crimestoppers at 429-TIPS.
