The skeletal remains of a white female in her late teens to mid-twenties was found on April 18, 1985 next to some farmland near Cooley Lake in Southeast Clay County. All detectives ever found was a skull, dug up by a dog, with a bullet hole through it. Investigators never identified the victim and say that's their number one priority now. Rob Low, Fox 4 News rlow@wdaftv4.com http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/n...al/14004380.htm Posted on Fri, Mar. 03, 2006 Cold case squad seeks ID in 20-year-old case By GLENN E. RICE The Kansas City Star Composite of victim Clay County authorities hope a composite drawing released Thursday will lead to identification of a woman whose skeletal remains were found more than 20 years ago. Clay County Sheriff’s Maj. Roger Yates said investigators with the department’s cold case squad recently received the composite from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. They hope it generates new leads. “The passage of time creates some barriers,” he said. “However, it also provides some new technologies.” In April 1985, officers found a woman’s skull as well as bones from a pelvis, lower jaw, legs and feet by a dirt mound near Edwards Road and Missouri 210 in the southeast part of the county. There was also a woman’s comb and some hair. Yates said the woman, believed to be between 18 and 22 years old, was probably a victim of foul play. He said she may have been dead for six months to two years before the discovery. Anyone with information should call the TIPS Hotline at (816) 474-TIPS (474-8477) or the Clay County Sheriff’s Department at (816) 407-3715. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To reach Glenn E. CLAY COUNTY, Mo. – Bones, which were discovered by a dog and his owner, once again have the attention of local law enforcement. It is believed they are the remains of a woman from a 1985 homicide cold case. The bones were discovered by the dog, which dragged them into the backyard on his owner’s home. The owner called police after seeing the bones. “He had a Pit Bull and a Doberman. They dug up a part of the jaw bone from what I remember,” Rich Edwards said about his neighbor’s dogs. He’s lived there his entire life and was only 11-years-old when the bones were discovered. Edwards can still recall the frenzy surrounding that day. “They covered that scene and had it quarantined off, dang near left an officer around there for a while before they had it all cleared up,” he said. Even though the bones are long gone, the memory still haunts the community. “Keep my doors locked I guess. We don’t keep them unlocked anymore as we used to probably,” he said. About three weeks ago, the bones were sent to a forensics program and the University of North Texas. Composite sketch of what the female homicide victim may have looked like.
