Dixon, Mo. — A little metal marker lacking a birthdate and naming the woman buried there as a Jane Doe is all that remains of an unidentified woman discovered May 25, 1981 near Dixon.
Laura Huffman of Waynesville wants to give the woman her name back. She has started a Facebook campaign in the hopes that her family or someone who knows something might recognize her.
Dawnmarie Secora and Huffman, local historians, heard the story in the course of their study of local history and felt prompted to try to do something to help.
The Facebook page created to attempt to identify Pulaski County's Jane Doe is called Remembering Pulaski County's Jane Doe and can be found at http://www.facebook.com/rememberingpulaskicountyjanedoe.
Huffman said she hopes to identify the woman and maybe, at some time in the future, get her a real grave marker with her actual name on it.
Huffman plans to talk to people in the area who were around when the case first happened, try to find who would be in charge of the case now and would like to get an artist's rendering of Jane Doe's face to use for identification rather than the post-mortem picture that is available now.
The Jane Doe buried at Waynesville Memorial Cemetery was found in the water at the Mill Creek crossing of highway MM northeast of Dixon.
According to Daily Guide archives, she was found by Wayne Brandt of Dixon while he was attempting to get a load of gravel from the creek.
She was described as dark complected, in her 30's, with a full upper denture plate, five foot, three inches tall and weighing 130 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.According to news coverage from Daily Guide archives, the Pulaski County Sheriff's Department had trouble pinpointing her ethnicity because she had been severely beaten and was strangled.
She was found wearing a dark blue, long-sleeved blouse with white pinstripes, jeans, and a bra with Jubel or Julie written inside the bra in magic marker. She was not wearing shoes, no shoes were found at the scene and she was found with a pair of pantyhose wrapped around her neck.County Coroner Jim Long ruled that the cause of death was strangulation, according to Daily Guide archives.
Pictures of the woman's face were sent to television stations in Springfield and Columbia at the time, but no one ever came forward to identify her.
The anniversary of her death is coming next week which has prompted Secora and Huffman to decide to hold a memorial service for Jane Doe at her graveside at 9 a.m. They plan to place fresh flowers on her grave and have a minister say a few words. The community is welcome to attend.
The generic marker showing the place where Pulaski County's Jane Doe is buried is showing it's 31 year-old age. Locals would like to see a real headstone there with the woman's real name on it.

Justice for Pulaski County's Jane Doe
It's been a mystery for 31 years as to who killed an unidentified woman and dumped her body in rural Pulaski County. Now the Waynesville, MO community is hoping a new look at the cold case will help solve the crime.

WAYNESVILLE, Mo. - The Pulaski County Sheriff says it's the only cold case in his county and after more than 30 years no progress has been made.

An unidentified middle aged woman was found strangled to death and all authorities have to go by is a picture of her body.

The body was found in rural Pulaski County in a creek bed off Highway MM near Dixon.

To this day little is known about this Jane Doe, but with some help from social media, one Waynesville woman wants to change that.

Walking through Waynesville Memorial Cemetery in Pulaski County it's easy to miss a marker for a Jane Doe.

No date of birth, only a date of death.

"First of all her life was taken away and her name, that's just too sad," says Waynesville resident Laura Huffman.

Huffman moved to Waynesville the year Jane Doe's body was found.

She says she remembers hearing about Jane Doe every once in awhile and after 31 years, it's time for this cold case to get solved.

"Hopefully someone out there will recognize her or it will strike a chord with somebody. We just want her to have her name back," Huffman says.

That's why she's using everything she can to get her picture back into the public's eye.

"We decided to start a Facebook page and share her image. So far it's been shared at least 12,000 friends of friends so it's getting out there," Huffman says.

But with little information to go on, it's hard to solve the case.

"We just have no clue, we have nothing," says Pulaski County Sheriff J.B. King. "The longer a case goes, the longer the memories dry up and evidence degrades and people involved die."

Sheriff King says Missouri State Highway Patrol conducted a lengthy investigation when the body was found.

Even so, the case file is small.

"To the best of my knowledge no leads have ever been found in this case," Sheriff King states.

King says the new publicity is a good idea for the case and even gives him hope that new information could come forward.

"All we need is one little brick to come loose from the brick wall and you can tear down the brick wall pretty easy. But you have to have the first brick removed before you get anywhere," King explains.

Huffman is planning a remembrance ceremony this Friday right by Jane Doe's grave at Waynesville Memorial Cemetery.

She hopes to continue this tradition until the cold case is solved.

If you have any information about this case, you're asked to call the Missouri State Highway Patrol at 573-368-2221.
