Woman's Body Found At Mogul

Reno, NV
Vicky Nguyen

A gruesome discovery Friday evening when a woman's corpse found near the train tracks in Mogul.

Deputies say a man out hiking found the body off Highway 80 at the Mogul exit.

Sheriff's deputies say the body was so badly decomposed that it offered very little information - all they know at this point is that it was a woman's body that had been here for some time.

The call came in shortly after five o'clock Friday. The man didn't want to speak on camera but he says he was out looking for cans when he stumbled on the body.

He says it was wrapped in a shower curtain. He described the body as black from decay - and he says he could see an arm and what looked like a rib.

Deputies are treating this as a suspicious death.

"With the heat the way it is, there is some decomposition, it's hard to
tell it could be weeks or months - it's really tough to say," said Sgt. Dan Brown.

An autopsy was scheduled for 8 o'clock this morning. Investigators say they will look at dental records or DNA to try and identify this woman.

The area where the body was found is a public-access trail mostly used by mountain bikers and hikers and it gets a fair amount of traffic.

But deputies say the body was partially hidden in the brush so it could have been easily missed by people going by.

Some new developments tonight in the case of the body discovered Friday in the Mogul area west of Reno.

The body of a woman was found Friday afternoon near I-80 by a man who says he was out looking for cans.

Washoe County Sheriff's Deputies investigating the scene say the badly-decomposed body was wrapped in a shower curtain.

An autopsy was conducted Saturday and, while the woman's identity and how she died are still a mystery, investigators say the body is that of an adult black woman, about five feet two inches tall with a medium build and short black hair.

Deputies are treating this as a suspicious death.

Investigators are asking for your help with this case. If you have any information, call the Washoe County Sheriff's Office at 328-3001, or Secret Witness at 322-4900.

Deputies ask for help identifying body

Staff Report
RENO GAZETTE-JOURNAL
7/29/2003 10:05 pm

Washoe County sheriff’s deputies need help identifying a body found in the Mogul area last week.

The body appears to be that of a black female with short hair, about 5-feet-5, with long and disfigured toenails, the sheriff’s office said.

A ring described as a white metal, possibly silver, was on her right ring finger. The ring had a scroll design that appears to have been cut at one time and then partially soldered back together.

The body was found Friday between Interstate 80 and the railroad tracks, west of the Mogul exit.

Sheriff’s officials ask anyone who may have seen suspicious people or vehicles there in recent weeks to contact detectives at 328-3320 or Secret Witness at 322-4900.

Detectives seek help with unsolved homicides

RENO GAZETTE-JOURNAL
Posted: 1/12/2004 10:54 pm

Washoe County Sheriff’s detectives are asking the public for help solving two unrelated homicides from last year.
The decomposed remains of an unidentified woman were found in July in a small dump between Interstate 80 and the railroad tracks, west of the Mogul exit.
The second person killed was 36-year-old Tammy Jean Brown, whose body was found Sept. 23 in Thomas Creek Canyon. The Reno woman had been strangled.
“We have just gotten to a point where the leads have gotten fewer, and we want to get more,” Sgt. Clyde Terrell said. “The Jane Doe case is the most perplexing because not to knowing who she is makes it tough to investigate.”
Investigators found on the unidentified woman’s finger a silver ring with a scroll design.
Terrell said they all they know about her is that she was black, between 40 and 80 and had bad teeth. He said she was left outside in the heat for at least three weeks.
Next month, detectives are expecting a California forensic anthropologist to help identify her and conclude how she died. Because of where she was dumped, Terrell said, it’s possible she is not from the area and was transported there by her killer.
This is the county’s seventh unidentified homicide victim since 1979. Terrell said that a cold case detective is still working those cases.
All identifying information has been entered into a national database to compare with reported missing people.
Secret Witness is offering a $2,500 reward each for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the women’s killers.

Sheriff’s detectives ask anyone with information to call them at 328-3320 or Secret Witness at 322-4900.

Deputies seek public’s help to ID slain woman

Washoe County deputies need the public’s help identifying the body of a woman found two years ago on the dirt extension of Mogul Road, south of Interstate 80.

With the help of a forensic artist, detectives created a facial reconstruction, authorities said Wednesday.

Detectives said her death was being investigated as a homicide, and her body had been in the heat at least three weeks when it was found. Someone walking in the area found the victim’s body on July 25, 2003.

“We’ve been actively pursuing this case for two years,” said Deputy Darren Rice, a sheriff’s office spokesman.

“We have this picture of her,” Rice said. “We’re hoping someone will identify her and tell us who she is. Knowing who she is would help immensely in solving this case.”

A year ago, a forensic pathologist examined the woman’s remains and determined that she was black, 28 to 36 years old and 5 feet 5 inches tall, deputies said.

She was missing 16 teeth and had a healed fracture to the right side of her nose that would have made her face appear uneven.

Investigators said she wore a silver ring with a raised scroll detail. The ring had been cut at one time.

Her toenails were elongated, thickened and misshapen.

Anyone with information is asked to call detectives at 328-3320 or Secret Witness at 322-4900.
