http://www.foxreno.com/news/20150819/detail.html Community Bids Farewell To Abandoned Baby Posted: 10:43 pm PDT July 22, 2009 Updated: 1:50 am PDT July 23, 2009 HAYWARD, Calif. -- Hundreds of people gathered at Hayward's Chapel of the Chimes on Wednesday to say goodbye to someone who they didn't even know. They were there for the funeral of an unidentified newborn whose body was found in a dumpster a few months ago. The baby girl was born on May 18th. A man rummaging for cans in a dumpster at a Union City apartment house found the baby's lifeless body stuffed in a trash bag. Police said the medical examiner still has not determined whether Baby Jane Doe, with her umbilical cord still attached, was stillborn or died after birth. "In our own minds we struggle to understand why any parent, why any person would choose to discard such a precious human life," said Union City Police Chaplain Albert Valencia in a eulogy at the baby's service. The men and women of the Union City Police Department were so moved by what happened in their city that they adopted the infant and named her Matea Esperanza, meaning "gift of God" and "hope." Police said they're still treating the case as a homicide. A camera scanned the crowd for the still unknown mother. The newborn could have been dropped off at a police or fire station without consequences, and both were close to the dumpster where the baby was left. Baby Matea Esperanza is now buried in Babyland at the Hayward cemetery. The men and women of the community said the unwanted child is unwanted no more. |
