Human skull found in ’79 to be DNA tested By Eric Miller Robertson County Times A skull found in Robertson County in 1979 will receive DNA testing. “We are in the process of going back through our cases and re-analyzing our cold cases because we have new methods of identifying remains,” said Lee Meadows Jantz, coordinator of the Forensic Anthropology Center at the University of Tennessee. The skull’s discovery was reported in the March 22, 1979 edition of the Robertson County Times. According to the story, two boys discovered the skull near Interstate 65. “They brought it home in a paper sack,” Robertson County Investigator Ben Bailey said in 1979. “We have no way of knowing whether it washed out of an old grave, was thrown on the highway by someone or arrived there by a dozen other ways.” The Robertson County Sheriff’s office sent the skull via U.S. Mail to William Bass of the University of Tennessee Department of Anthropology. Bass, who has assisted in identifying remains for local and federal authorities and is renown for his research in the field, examined the skull. The findings of the examination were that the skull belonged to a white male between the ages of 30 and 50. Also, it was estimated that the length of time since death was between six to nine months prior to discovery, according to a sheriff’s office report. UT Knoxville is a key center of study in the field of forensic anthropology and is the home of the first “body farm,” an outdoor research area used to study decomposition founded by Bass. “Most counties in that state know that if they find skeletal remains, that they can contact us. We will assist in the recovery of the remains and the identification of the remains,” Jantz said, adding that technological advances may provide more information about the remains. “We are submitting DNA samples to the University of North Texas health science lab to have them do the DNA extraction,” Jantz said. “They have a database that matches the FBI database. Our cases will go into the database to check against missing people. We are trying to get our unknowns into this database.” The sheriff’s office was contacted so that the skull could receive an NCIC number. Once the skull is tested, there is no guarantee that it will be identified. “Each of these old cases, I think are long shots,” Jantz said. “The missing persons files are not on computer files anymore or probably never were.” http://www.rctimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/artic.../304170007/1304 |
