By Michelle Mondo - Express-News A man riding his all-terrain vehicle along river front property in Kendall County on Saturday found a human skull and bones underneath the Guadalupe River Bridge.

The Kendall County Sheriff's Office was called around 5 p.m. to the 52000 block of Interstate 10 East after the bones were spotted approximately 75 feet from the bank of the river and 50 feet off of the dirt road that runs underneath the bridge, according to a news release from the Sheriff's Office.

The bones were partially buried. There were no personal items, clothing or identification with the body and the gender and age are not known.

The Sheriff's Office requested the help of the Texas Rangers with the investigation, the release said

Human remains were discovered by a father and daughter along the Guadalupe River near Comfort on Saturday evening.

David Cheney and his daughter were riding in their ATV underneath the I-10 bridge when they spotted something white lying in a grassy area near the river. Upon taking a close look, they realized it was a human skull with two vertebrae.

Kendall County Sheriff’s Office was notified and found almost a complete skeleton after digging in the area where the skull was found.

Chief Deputy Matt King says based on the vegetation and soil in the area, it appears the remains have been there at least a few years. Deputies did recover dental remains and possible DNA evidence which could ultimately lead to an identification.

King does not believe the remains are connected to the 1987 flood when a school bus full of children was swept into the river and some were never recovered.

“The initial indication is this is probably not a child, but an older individual.

Evidence indicates remains are from older person
Published: Thursday, March 11, 2010 2:24 PM CST

Skeletal remains recovered from the banks of the Guadalupe River Sunday will not bring closure to a decades-old tragedy as some had hoped.

“Evidence from the scene indicates the skeletal remains are that of an older person who may have had some type of chest surgery,” Kendall County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Matt King said. “The body was probably there for only a couple of years.”

In the days since the discovery, many have speculated the remains might be those of a teen still missing after a church bus carrying 43 passengers was swamped in a flood July 17, 1987, on the Hermann and Sons crossing near Comfort. The church group from Dallas had been attending the Pot of Gold Baptist Camp near Comfort and the bus was headed home early due to the heavy rains swelling the Guadalupe. Survivors were pulled from the water and rescued from trees. John Bankston, 17, of Dallas, was credited with saving a friend before he disappeared in the water. Recovery efforts spanned weeks. Nine bodies were recovered but no sign of Bankston was found.

King said after an exam by the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office, the remains recovered Sunday will probably be sent to Fort Worth for a forensics anthropology exam at the University of North Texas Health Science Center for Human Identification.

Texas Rangers were called to assist in the initial investigation and recovery efforts after an ATV rider reported finding the remains Sunday. The bones were found approximately 75 feet from the bank of the river and 50 feet off the dirt road that runs underneath the bridge, according to King. The bones were partially buried within a washed out sunken area surrounded in high grass and weeds. The area had a large amount of debris from prior flood activity.

No personal items, clothing or identification were found with the body and investigators don’t know the gender or age the person might have been.

The investigation continues under the direction of Lt. Shad Prichard, King said.

Authorities seek help identifying body
By Zeke MacCormack
Published: 10:41 a.m., Thursday, February 10, 2011

Kendall County authorities are trying to identify the woman whose remains were found there nearly a year ago beneath an Interstate 10 bridge over the Guadalupe River.

Kendall County Sheriff Roger Duncan said that forensic investigators determined that the deceased was likely Caucasian or Hispanic, in her mid-20s and was between 5 feet 1 inch and 5 feet 5 inches tall.

She may have used crutches or a wheelchair due to ankle problems, he said, and also had chest surgery long before she died.

“It is possible that this victim may appear to have slight asymmetry to her facial features, most notably, one eye slightly higher than the other, as well as possibly the eyebrow,” Duncan said in a press release issued Thursday.

The woman's nearly complete skeleton was discovered March 6 by a man riding an ATV beside the river in the 52000 block of I-10 East. Anyone with information about her should call 830-816-2324.

Sketch released to help solve mystery death
by Nadia Ramdass / KENS 5

SAN ANTONIO -- They may not know who she is, but Kendall County Sheriff’s deputies do know a lot about her. They are hoping a new sketch, based on her remains, may lead to her being identified.

Investigators are not revealing how this woman died. However, they have shared quite a bit of information about her.

Kendall County Sheriff’s investigators said a series of forensic artist renderings may be the missing piece of a puzzle.

"If I were to go missing tomorrow my DNA and my identifiers are on file in a database. Unfortunately, Jane Doe is not in any database that we have access to right now, so this sketch is very important because this may be the only thing that we have right now for someone to say I know who that is," Lt. Shad Prichard of the Kendall County Sheriff's Office said.

A father and daughter made a startling discovery of a woman’s skull in March 2010 under IH-10 East near Comfort along the Guadalupe River.

An autopsy revealed the remains had been in that location for an estimated 2 to 10 years.

“Once we got it uncovered, there was about an 80-percent skeleton there and the way it was laid… that tells you it has been there for a while,” Lt. Shad Prichard said.

Through the use of modern science, forensic researchers determined the woman’s age along with some additional information. They estimated the woman’s age is between 24 and 27.

"We know she's a Hispanic mix female, she would have been medium built. She has some issues with her ankles so she may of have a limp possibly crutches and on the extreme level she could have been in a wheel chair," Lt. Shad Prichard said.

According to investigators, the woman also appeared to have undergone open heart surgery at an early age. She also had a distinctive overbite and one eye is slightly higher than the other, as well as her eyebrows.

If the sketch of this woman looks familiar to you, please call the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office at (830) 249-9721.

Unidentified Skeletal Remains

Published: Thursday, February 10, 2011 02:30 pm | Updated: 02/10/2011 02:30 pm

On Saturday March 6, 2010 Kendall County Deputies were dispatched to the 52000 block of IH-10 East, underneath the Guadalupe River Bridge, where a witness reported that he located human skeletal remains while riding his ATV through the high grass along the river.

Kendall County Sheriff’s Investigators recovered the remains, which were embedded in the soil, and discovered a nearly complete skeleton believed to be that of a Caucasian or Hispanic female. The remains were sent to the Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy, after which the remains were submitted to the University of North Texas Center for Human Identification to undergo a forensic anthropological analysis.

Information resulting from these medical and scientific examinations were returned to the Sheriff’s Office and are as follows. The victim estimated age at the time of her death was likely between 24 and 27 years old, but possibilities of missing persons slightly outside of that age range should also be considered. She was between 5 feet 1inch to 5 feet 5 inches in height. She would have had an obvious overbite, along with dental discolorations and abnormalities. There were also surgical sutures on her sternum which would indicate a type of open heart surgery at an early age. It is very likely that this victim was using crutches or confined to a wheel chair due to some medical issues with her ankles.

A two dimensional facial reconstruction was developed by a Forensic Artist with the Texas Rangers' Evidential Art & Facial Identification Unit. It is possible that this victim may appear to have slight asymmetry to her facial features, most notably, one eye slightly higher than the other, as well as possibly the eyebrow.

The actual hair length and style are unknown. Due to the condition of the recovered facial bones the forensic drawing should only be viewed as a broad interpretation of the victim’s appearance. Although derived from the victim's actual skull, and deeply rooted in science, facial reconstructions should not be viewed as an exact likeness.

If you have any information which may lead to the identity of this woman please contact Lieutenant Shad Prichard at the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office (830) 249-9721 or Dispatch Center (830)249-8647.
