Officials seek public's help in solving 20-year old John Doe case

By Deanna Boyd
Star-Telegram Staff Writer

FORT WORTH -- Authorities are asking for the public's help in identifying a homicide victim whose partial skeletal remains were found in Parker County 20 years ago.

The scattered remains were found on Oct. 27, 1985 by a man and his son walking about three miles south of Springtown on Texas 51. They are believed to be those of a white man, 15 to 20 years of age, who had short, brown hair and dental fillings.

Authorities believe the man likely died or disappeared in 1984 or early 1985. They declined to release the man's cause of death.

"His young age makes it a bit unusual that it's gone this long and been unidentified," said Dr. Dana Austin, a forensic anthropologist with the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's office.

During a Tuesday morning news conference, Austin and officials with the Parker County Sheriff's Office displayed a facial reconstruction of the victim created by forensic artist Suzanne Baldon.

"The facial reconstruction is not designed to be a portrait," Austin said. "It's designed to be a likeness and show the proportions of the individual's face. The teeth, however, are the one part that actually do belong to that person."

Austin said a DNA profile extracted from the remains has been entered into the Texas Missing Persons DNA Database, but so far no link has been made. The database, housed at the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth, compares DNA from unidentified remains with DNA samples from relatives or personal articles belonging to missing people.

Parker County Sheriff Larry Fowler said the victim may be from outside Parker County. He said detectives and Texas Rangers who originally investigated the 1985 case could find no match between the remains and men reported missing from the county.

"They chased down numerous, numerous leads on missing persons, far and wide, and were never able to make any connection," Fowler said.

Authorities found three jackets nearby -- a white fleece Union Bay jacket, a gray cotton Raphael jacket (size small) and a dark gray cotton-blend Gimmick jacket (size small.) Also found were a pair of Guess jeans, blue with leather trim (size 29-32) and Jockey underwear (size 32-34).

Officials say they believe someone in the public, after seeing the facial reconstruction, can give the unidentified remains a name.

"We were very pleasantly surprised earlier this year when we were able to resolve a 41-year-old case," Austin said. "The public played a key role in that case and I believe they can play a key role in this case as well."

Anyone with information about the man's identity is asked to call Sgt. Mark Arnett with the Parker County Sheriff's Office at (817) 594-8845 or Dr. Dana Austin or Dr. Roger Metcalf with the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's office at (817) 920-5700, extension 161 or 160.
