SKELETON FOUND IN SHENANDOAH PARK
Washington Post - Wednesday, January 29, 1997
Author: From News Services and Staff Reports

A human skeleton was found Sunday afternoon by a hiker in Shenandoah National Park, officials said yesterday, but they said they do not know how or when the person died.

National Park Service spokeswoman Lyn Rothgeb said there is no evidence linking the remains to the slayings of two female campers whose bodies were found near the Appalachian Trail on June 1.

The throats of those campers, Julianne Williams, 24, and Lollie Winans, 26, had been slashed. Their killer has not been found.

Rothgeb said the body found Sunday had been there "at least several months. We are not ruling out any cause of death, including suicide."

Rothgeb said the remains, together with shoes, pants and a shirt, were found away from the main trails , about 10 miles south of Front Royal and a mile west of Skyline Drive.

The remains were taken to the Virginia medical examiner's office in Fairfax, Rothgeb said.

There were no active reports of missing hikers at the time of the discovery, she said.

REMAINS FOUND IN PARK THOSE OF A YOUNG MAN
Richmond Times-Dispatch - Saturday, February 1, 1997
The skeleton found in the Shenandoah National Park early this week belongs to a young man who was wearing hiking boots, a short-sleeve shirt and long pants. Other than that, authorities are stumped.

Park officials yesterday said that an autopsy determined only that the remains belonged to a 30- to 35-year-old man. He was white and about 5 feet, 6 inches tall.

The cause and approximate date of his death remain a puzzle, and the park has no active reports of missing persons or unattended vehicles. Investigators are matching the new information with missing-person reports from across the country.

A day hiker found the body Sunday while bushwhacking about a mile west of Skyline Drive, near Milepost 13, and about 150 yards off the Appalachian Trail .

The skeleton was clothed and mostly intact, with some signs that animals had been playing with it. He had nothing with him other than his clothes.

Human Remains Found
Daily News-Record (Harrisonburg, VA) - Monday, February 3, 1997
In Shenandoah NP;

Officials Seek Answers

By DEREK BARR News-Record Staff Writer Skeletal human remains were discovered Sunday in Shenandoah National Park, but a park official said Tuesday the cause of death and the identity of the person won't be known until an autopsy is performed.

A hiker found the clothed remains late Sunday afternoon and reported the find early Monday to the park's Communications Center, SNP spokeswoman Lyn Rothgeb said Tuesday.

The remains were discovered in the northern section of the park, about 10 miles south of Front Royal and one mile off the west side of Skyline Drive, Rothgeb said.

The remains -- clothed in a shirt, pants and shoes -- had been at the site for several months, Rothgeb said. She said the remains were not near any campsite and there was no camping gear or other possessions nearby.

The remains will be sent to a state medical examiner's office in Roanoke for an autopsy, park officials said.

Rothgeb said the park has no open investigations of missing people or abandoned vehicles that may shed light on the identity of the body.

Park officials, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Virginia State Police are working jointly on the investigation. Rothgeb said authorities haven't ruled out any cause of death, including suicide.

Virginia State Police spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell said that state police special agents helped process the site where the remains were found, but that park officials were controlling the investigation.

Rothgeb said there was nothing to indicate that the remains are in any way connected to the homicides of two female hikers killed in the park last May.

In those slayings, the bodies of Julie Williams, 24, St. Cloud, Minn., and Lollie Winans, 26, Unity, Maine, were found June 1 in the park at their campsite off a trail near Skyland Lodge, near the Appalachian Trial. Their throats had been slashed, and their hands were bound. One body was found inside a tent, the other outside.

The slayings have never been solved, and Rothgeb said Tuesday that the killings were still under investigation and that no new information was available.

The case was featured on Fox TV's "America's Most Wanted" last July. Bill Falls, FBI supervisory special agent, said in September that investigators had checked out thousands of leads and interviewed hundreds of people.
