http://archives.seattletimes.nwsource.com/...bones+newcastle Local News: Friday, January 17, 2003 E-mail article Print view Ravine scoured for clues after body parts found By Sara Jean Green Seattle Times Eastside bureau Investigators combed a shallow ravine for evidence yesterday after a state game agent stumbled across skeletal remains in a park on Newcastle's northern edge Wednesday. The remains are human, but as of last night, King County Sheriff officials didn't know the age or sex of the body; it probably had been in the woods less than two years, sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Kevin Fagerstrom said. Items that investigators uncovered yesterday were transferred to the King County Medical Examiner's Office in Seattle. Sheriff's officials will meet today with medical investigators in the hope that "they can give us their read on age and gender," Fagerstrom said. He declined to say whether there was evidence of a homicide. Amid a maze of police tape, about 30 sheriff detectives and officials from King County Search and Rescue scoured the wooded area on hands and knees, sifting through wet leaves and dirt for clues. Colored flags used to mark evidence dotted the ravine floor, and in some spots, cardboard boxes were placed upside down to protect items the investigators found. Cadaver dogs helped in the search, which covered roughly a quarter-acre along an isolated stretch of road that skirts Coal Creek Park. But the search area could expand because "experience tells us animals do like to spread body parts over a fairly wide area," Fagerstrom said. As soon as a gender and an approximate age are determined, law-enforcement agencies throughout the region will try to match the bones with missing persons, Fagerstrom said, but "no absolute likelies are jumping out at us." The remains were found covered with maple leaves, but there was no indication someone had tried to bury them, Fagerstrom said. "It's possible we could make an identification tomorrow — or never," he said. A state Fish and Wildlife agent discovered the bones late Wednesday afternoon while surveying wildlife in the area, Fagerstrom said. Coal Creek Park is connected to Cougar Mountain Regional Wildland Park, and cougars have been spotted in the vicinity, he said. Fagerstrom declined to speculate whether the remains could be those of Hartanto Santoso, an Indonesian citizen living in Kirkland who police think is dead. He disappeared in February 2001, and his body has not been found. Kim Heichel Mason, a co-worker and former lover of Santoso's, has been charged with aggravated first-degree murder in his death; jury selection in Mason's trial is set to begin next week. "Our detectives are aware of the case, but there was nothing found here to identify or eliminate this individual as a possible (victim)," Fagerstrom said of Santoso. http://archives.seattletimes.nwsource.com/...bones+newcastle Investigators think remains are of young adult male By Sara Jean Green Seattle Times Eastside bureau Medical investigators think skeletal remains found in Newcastle last week are those of a young adult male, but they still don't know who he is or how he died. Officials with the King County Medical Examiner's Office tentatively concluded Tuesday night that the remains belonged to a male but haven't determined an approximate age, other than to say he could have been in his late teens to early-40s, said King County Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Kevin Fagerstrom. "They're still working on cause of death, and we're working to narrow our list of missings to young adult males," Fagerstrom said, referring to missing-person cases throughout the Seattle area. A state Fish and Wildlife agent, conducting a wildlife survey, stumbled upon the skeletal remains buried under wet leaves Jan. 15 in a ravine along an isolated stretch of road that skirts Newcastle's Coal Creek Park. It's believed the bones had been in the woods for less than two years. Further forensic work will be done to determine when the man died, Fagerstrom said. He added investigators didn't find evidence at the scene to indicate the remains could belong to Hartanto Santoso, but "he has not been ruled out and is one of several that will get looked at" for a possible match. Santoso, 31, an Indonesian citizen living in Kirkland, disappeared in February 2001. His body has not been found, but police think he was killed. Kim Heichel Mason, a co-worker and former lover of Santoso's, has been charged with aggravated first-degree murder in his death; Mason's trial is set to begin next month. http://archives.seattletimes.nwsource.com/...bones+newcastle Human remains found near Coal Creek Park in Newcastle By Sara Jean Green Seattle Times Eastside bureau NEWCASTLE — A game agent stumbled across skeletal remains late yesterday afternoon in a shallow ravine along an isolated stretch of road that skirts Coal Creek Park in Newcastle. The remains are human, but King County Sheriff officials say they don’t yet know the age or gender of the body. The remains have probably been in the woods less than two years, said sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Kevin Fagerstrom. The remains were found about 12 feet from the edge of Southeast Newcastle Coal Creek Road, just west of the driveway that leads to the Golf Club at Newcastle.
