Public's help needed to ID human remains found on Orcas Island

The Associated Press

FRIDAY HARBOR — San Juan County officials are seeking the public's help in identifying human remains discovered on a remote Orcas Island beach last month.

"There's enough of the teeth left in the skull that we believe we can match dental records," Jon Larson, an investigator for the prosecutor's office, said Monday.

The bones were found March 20 by a hiker a half-mile south of Point Lawrence, on the island's eastern tip. Officials retrieved them the next morning, according to a news release issued by Sheriff William G. Cumming.

The Snohomish County medical examiner and a King County forensic anthropologist determined the remains to be those of a man at least 30 years old; about 5-foot-9 ½, plus or minus 3 inches; and likely white, Hispanic or mixed Asian and American Indian ancestry. He is believed to have died two to 12 months ago, and the bones are believed to have washed onto the beach after being in the water for some time.

"This body could have traveled an extraordinary distance before coming to rest on Orcas Island," Cumming said.

Authorities throughout the region, including British Columbia, have been notified of the find, he said.

A reconstruction has been done of the skeletal remains found March 21, 2007 on a remote Orcas Island beach. A Snohomish County Deputy created a sketch of what the victim may have looked like.

The victim is believed to be a male, over 30-years-old, 5'9" tall (+ or - 3") and of white, Hispanic, Asian or native American descent. (possibly mixed race). The time of death was estimated between March of 2006 and Jan. 2007, possibly longer.

If you have any information concerning this man or recognize the sketch as a missing person, please contact Det. Buchanan at the San Juan County Sheriff's office in Friday Harbor at 360.376.4151.

Sheriff releases sketch of deceased found on beach
By Richard Walker, Today correspondent

Story Published: Nov 7, 2010

(Story Updated: Nov 5, 2010 )

SAN JUAN ISLAND, Wash. – Investigators and the regional medical examiner believe human remains found on a remote beach on Orcas Island in 2007 may be those of an American Indian or First Nations man, or possibly a Native man of mixed ancestry.

A hiker spotted the skeletal remains on the beach on the island’s Point Lawrence on March 21, 2007. A forensic anthropologist determined the deceased was a male, between 30 and 50 years of age, 5 feet 9 (plus or minus 3 inches). The time of death is estimated at between March 2006 and January 2007.

Two other clues: An argyle sock, and what the county coroner described as “a unique gold inlay in the upper molars.”

The San Juan County sheriff notified Interpol – the International Criminal Police Organization, based in Lyon, France – and law enforcement agencies in the region, but no leads have yet resulted.

The sheriff’s department released a sketch of the deceased, based on a reconstruction, Sept. 28. Anyone with information about the deceased should call Detective Lach Buchanan, San Juan County Sheriff’s Department at (360) 378-4151.

The San Juan Islands are bordered by straits with fast-moving currents. Vancouver Island, British Columbia, is to the west, mainland British Columbia is to the north, mainland Washington state is to the east, and the Olympic Peninsula is to the south. The waters are heavily trafficked by commercial ships, pleasure boats and tour boats.
