More human bones were found near a South Sound elementary school Saturday, two days after a human skull was found in the same area.

Volunteers with Thurston County search-and-rescue organizations uncovered more bones during an all-day search near Meadows Elementary School that started at 7 a.m. today, Thurston County Sheriff’s Lt. Chris Mealy said.

The bones later were identified as a human lower jaw bone, a femur (thigh) bone, lower leg bones, upper arm bones, vertebrae (back) bones, both scapulas (shoulder blades) and rib bones, Thurston County Coroner Gary Warnock said.

The coroner’s office also found teeth with dental fillings in the skull, he said.

The search for human remains started after three boys playing in a field of dense brush behind the school found the skull shortly before 7 p.m. Thursday.

Investigating detectives with the sheriff’s office said the skull likely belonged to a 35- to 40-year-old man. The rib was 30 to 40 yards from the skull. The skull likely was outside for more than a year, Mealy said.

Detectives don’t know the identity of the man or how he died.

Detective Rod Gray said last week that the cause of the man’s death is considered suspicious, but officials can’t say for sure that he was a homicide victim.

A .38-caliber shell casing was found a few feet from the skull. Mealy said it’s uncertain whether the shell casing is connected to the man’s death. The location is a popular spot for target shooting, he said.

Also, there were bullet-riddled beer and soda cans about 50 yards from the skull, in what appears to be an encampment for the homeless.

The skull showed no obvious signs of trauma, such as a bullet hole, Gray said. The skull was above ground and was missing its lower jawbone, he added.

Three boys playing in a field of dense brush behind Meadows Elementary School found a human skull shortly before 7 p.m. Thursday.

An official with the Thurston County Coroner's Office who investigated later Thursday found a rib nearby.

On Friday, investigating detectives with the Thurston County Sheriff's Office said the skull likely belonged to a 35- to 40-year-old man. The rib — which has not been positively identified as being human — was 30 to 40 yards from the skull.

According to information from the Thurston County coroner, the skull likely was outside for more than a year, Thurston County Sheriff's Lt. Chris Mealy said.

Detectives don't yet know the identity of the man or how he died.

Detective Rod Gray said Friday that the cause of the man's death is considered suspicious, but officials can't say for sure that he was a homicide victim.

A .38-caliber shell casing was found a few feet from the skull. Mealy said it's uncertain whether the shell casing is connected to the man's death. The location is a popular spot for target shooting, Mealy said.

Also, there were bullet-riddled beer and soda cans about 50 yards from the skull, in what appears to be an encampment for the homeless.

The skull showed no obvious signs of trauma, such as a bullet hole, Gray said. The skull was above ground and was missing its lower jawbone, he added.

Angela Epperson, who lives at the end of the Meadows subdivision on Berne Lane, said she sees children walking on the paths behind her home in the wooded area where the skull was found, but she had no idea there was an encampment for the homeless there.

The encampment showed signs of recent human activity, such as a campfire, a newer-style bicycle, blankets and spray-painted trees. One tree had several skulls spray-painted on it.

Epperson said it was frightening to learn a human skull was found near where she lives.

"It's kind of scary," she said. "You like to think you live in a safe neighborhood, and then you come home and there are dead bodies in your backyard."

The children who found the skull Thursday did not touch it but told their grandmother, who returned to the scene with the boys, Mealy said. The grandmother then called the sheriff's office, he said.

The next step for the sheriff's office is to have a search-and-rescue team canvas the area, Mealy said. This morning, the team will look for other bones and clothing that might be connected to the skull, he said.

Detectives took fingerprints and other evidence from the encampment and will try to locate the people who live there in case they can help determine how the skull got there.

Lacey Kids Find Human Skull In Woods

LACEY, Wash. -- Two kids playing in the woods near Meadows Elementary in the Lacey area discovered a human skull Thursday night.

Thurston County Sheriff's Lt. Chris Mealy tells KIRO 7 the boys discovered the skull about 7 p.m. and ran back to their home and reported it to their grandmother.

The grandmother went into the woods with the boys and took several pictures of the skull with her cell phone and later showed those photos to Thurston County deputies.

Investigators tell KIRO-7 the skull appears to belong to a young man in his 20's and has likely been at the site for at least a year.

An additional search Thursday night also uncovered a rib bone nearby and what appeared to be the remnants of a potential homeless encampment nearby.

Detectives are out at the scene, conducting a more extensive search.

Right now, they have no idea who the skull may belong to or how the person died.

NEAR LACEY, Wash, - Thurston County sheriff’s detectives are searching a densely wooded area near an elementary school where three boys found a human skull Thursday night.

The gruesome discovery was made about 500 feet east of Meadows Elementary School off Deerbush Drive.

The boys ran home to get their grandmother, who took a photo of the skull on her cell phone and called police.

"A deputy responded, took a look at the photograph on the cell phone and said, 'Sure enough. That's a human skull,'" said Lt. Chris Mealy, Thurston County sheriff's spokesman.

Detectives immediately searched the area and also found a rib. Search and rescue workers will continue looking for clues Saturday.

The discovery has parents on alert.

"It's enough to make it where my son won't be walking to school by himself anymore,” said Amber Wagner.

Mealy says the skull appears to be that of a man in his 30s. It may have been there for more than a year. It does have some dental work that may help in identifying the man.

A spent .38 caliber casing was found about ten feet from the skull, but it’s not know if that is related to the skull.

Investigators said a homeless campsite that teens sometimes use for parties was found near the skull, but it's not known if that has anything to do with the skull.
