http://www.kansas.com/news/story/444632.html Officials brace for 'worst-case scenario' Search turns up few clues; tips sought BY STAN FINGER AND TIM POTTER The Wichita Eagle Jeff Tuttle/The Wichita Eagle Sedgwick County sheriff's deputies search a field near Viola, Kan., on Tuesday, June 24, 2008. Leads still coming in about Patterson disappearance Joyce Patterson Joyce Patterson is 5-feet-4 and weighs 113 pounds. She has brown hair and green eyes, and was last seen wearing khaki pants, a brown striped shirt and large glasses. Anyone with information on her whereabouts is asked to call 911, CrimeStoppers at 316-267-2111 or the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office at 316-660-5300. Law enforcement officers combed more than 20 miles of wheat fields, pastures and woods surrounding Viola in vain Tuesday for a convenience store clerk who vanished under suspicious circumstances the day before. Sedgwick County sheriff's Capt. Mike Oliver acknowledged authorities are preparing for "a worst-case scenario" in the disappearance of 48-year-old Joyce Patterson from the General Station Country Store at K-42 and 263rd Street West, near Viola -- about 20 miles southwest of Wichita. But family members clung to hope. "Joyce, we miss you," Larry Patterson said, struggling to hold back tears as he spoke across the road from the convenience store where his wife has worked for the past seven years. "Your grandson misses you. Your daughter misses you." Joyce Patterson was last seen at about 3:15 p.m. Monday at the convenience store, Oliver said. The owner returned about 45 minutes later to an empty store, and noticed that some of Patterson's belongings had been left behind and money had been taken from the cash register drawer. There were no indications of a struggle. Family and friends describe Patterson as a loyal, conscientious employee. "We're treating this as a worst-case scenario," Oliver said. "We don't know that that's happened yet. We just know that she's missing. "Her disappearance... has a lot of unanswered questions." Officers searched a five-mile area Monday and expanded that search Tuesday. About 30 law enforcement officers looked under bridges, among trees and along the Ninnescah River on Tuesday and found nothing, Oliver said. "We have a couple of leads we're working on, trying to track down," he said, but he would not elaborate. He urged anyone who may have seen or heard anything in the area between 3:15 and 4 p.m. Monday to contact authorities. Sheriff's deputies and Kansas Highway Patrol troopers halted traffic at the K-42 intersection Tuesday afternoon, showing motorists Patterson's photograph and asking if anyone had seen anything at or near the store Monday. Viola Baptist Church pastor Steve Sherbenou pleaded for people to search their memories for "anything that you saw or that you heard" -- even seemingly inconsequential details. A small detail may prove pivotal in this case, he said. A spokesman for the Patterson family repeated the plea Tuesday. Oliver said authorities have not ruled out anything, including the possibility that Joyce Patterson vanished voluntarily. But Larry Patterson rejected that. "Absolutely no way," he said. People around Viola, which has a population of about 200, weren't buying that, either. Larry and Joyce Patterson go everywhere together and really enjoy each other, Terry Alloway said as he relaxed inside A&D Automotive. "They're really close," Alloway said. Joyce Patterson is well-liked around town, he said. Alloway is recovering from a knee injury, and she would bring his call-in orders to his truck so he wouldn't have to get out. "She is so personable, she's another who never met a stranger," Sherbenou said. "She has always been very open and very generous. She just gives a lot of her soul." Her disappearance has shaken Viola. The Viola Baptist Church didn't have to add her last name to its "Please pray for Joyce" sign because everyone in town knew who it was and why she needed prayers. "You always hear that happens in big cities, but out here? It's just hard to believe," Alloway said. Jim Simon, who raises quarterhorses in the area, said an uneasiness has crept into the town. "I think everyone locked their doors last night," he said. "I can't blame them. You never know." Jordan Fields, who lives in Viola with his fiancee, said nothing remotely close to it has happened in his seven years of living in Viola. "I've got friends down the street," he said. "They're all worried." Viola Baptist Church hosted a prayer vigil for Joyce Patterson on Tuesday night. About 50 people filled the pews in the old, brick church. Because the convenience store is on a state highway, the case has been entered into the National Crime Information Center database, and jurisdictions in surrounding counties and states have been notified, Oliver said. Authorities have studied suspicious character reports from recent weeks in the Viola area, Oliver said, but turned up nothing promising. A woman who lives near the store said she checked her outbuildings but saw nothing suspicious. Her neighbors did the same. For now, she said, "Everybody's praying." |
