Former St. Clair woman vanishes without a trace

Buzz up! On Nov. 11, the day Krista Lueth disappeared, she left her horticulture class at Michigan State University and took a bus home.

At about 5:30 p.m., the 34-year-old Lansing woman, a St. Clair native, talked to Rick Stilgenbauer about selling the truck she never drove, raising his rent from $200 to $250, as well as how she was starting a part-time job as a waitress at a bar.

Lueth needed more money to make ends meet, said Stilgenbauer, 40, because her ex-boyfriend, who shared the rent and utilities, had moved out the previous week.

Stilgenbauer sublets a part of the house Lueth rents.

"She was making plans for the future to get by," Stilgenbauer said. "She was doing well, and everything seemed bright and happy for the moment."

Michigan State Police are investigating Lueth as a missing person. On Wednesday, police secured a warrant to search Lueth's apartment in the 1100 block of Eureka Street. It is not known what they were looking for.

"We're still investigating all the leads. We still have family, friends and neighbors we're interviewing," state police Detective Sgt. Kevin Mark said. "In this type of investigation, we've got to talk to everybody before we know what we really have."

Stilgenbauer's conversation with Lueth is the last time anyone has reported hearing from her. When she left her apartment, she locked it, leaving her cat inside.

"Nobody we've talked to knows where she went Tuesday night or who she went with," Lueth's sister, 39-year-old Elizabeth Crum, said by telephone from her home in Las Vegas. "It's just a blank page."

In interviews Wednesday, Crum, as well as Lueth's father, Roy Lueth of St. Clair, said they fear Krista is dead.

"If she did run away, she would have gone to my dad's house, she would have called me," Crum said. "I know her well enough to know she didn't just disappear."

Missed classes
Roy Lueth said he became increasingly concerned about his daughter last week when he could not reach her by cell phone.

"I called her on Tuesday evening, Nov. 11, and her phone went directly to voicemail, but I didn't think much of it," the 67-year-old man said. "When I called Wednesday, Thursday, Friday -- it kept going into voicemail."

She did not show up for classes Nov. 12, said Art Cameron, a professor of horticulture at MSU.

On Saturday, Roy Lueth drove to Lansing, checked on his daughter's apartment, which he said friends had opened the previous day because they also were concerned.

Nothing appeared unusual. He then filed a missing person report.

"She would not miss her classes. She would not leave her cat alone," he said, adding: "She was a person with such a great future."

He has driven to Lansing several times this week from the farm in St. Clair, where Krista, her sister and brother were raised.
Graduate program

Krista, who Cameron said is the top student in his class, is working on a bachelor's degree in horticulture. It would be her second bachelor's degree.

She needs the degree to apply to a graduate program at Cornell University, her father said.

Cameron said he met with her Nov. 10 because he was in the process of hiring her as an undergraduate employee. The position eventually would lead to an internship, he said.

"She's a wonderful, lovely woman," he said. "Whatever is going on is obviously not good, and it's hurting all of us who know her."

Police, friends search for clues about student's disappearance
By Abby Lubbers

Lueth
Rick Stilgenbauer is adjusting to the unfamiliar footsteps of police in the apartment above his own, where his friend of eight years was last seen Nov. 11.

Krista R. Lueth, 34, who is pursuing her second MSU bachelor’s degree in horticulture, spoke to Stilgenbauer in his kitchen between 5:30 and 6 p.m. Nov. 11. No one has reported seeing or hearing from Lueth since that conversation.

“It’s a dichotomy, because I’m used to having people coming and going and creaking around upstairs,” he said. “(Now) it’s been about two weeks of quiet except for people coming to the door.”

Lueth attended a lab at MSU until 5 p.m. Nov. 11, horticulture professor Art Cameron said. They scheduled a meeting for the following day, but she never showed up.

Investigators from the Michigan State Police searched Lueth’s apartment Wednesday and Thursday. They were looking for hints about where Lueth could be, State Police Sgt. John Faccio said.

“They were looking for clues as to where she may be, to find a sign where maybe she had written a note saying where she was going — just anything like that,” he said.

Police are investigating the incident as a missing person case, but are not ruling out foul play, Faccio said.

“Anytime there’s a missing person complaint we take it seriously. We always investigate it one way until the outcome goes another way,” he said.

Lueth had recently broken up with her boyfriend, who moved out of the apartment they shared between Nov. 6 and 11.

Police have spoken with the ex-boyfriend at least twice since Lueth disappeared, Faccio said. Faccio could not comment on whether he was cooperative in the interviews.

Her friends have been checking at restaurants and bars in the area to see if anyone has seen her, and her father, Roy Lueth, also has been searching for clues to his daughter’s whereabouts.

Lueth
A 34-year-old student has been missing for nine days, Michigan State Police reported.

Krista R. Lueth, who is pursuing her second MSU bachelor’s degree in horticulture, was last seen Nov. 11 at her Eureka Street home in Lansing. Lueth’s father reported her missing to State Police around noon Saturday.

Police are still investigating the incident and would not comment if the circumstances surrounding Lueth’s disappearance are suspicious.

“The case is still a missing person until we’ve conducted interviews with family and friends,” said State Police Sgt. Kevin Mark.

But Lueth’s sister, Elizabeth Crum, said she fears the case will not end well.

“We are all extremely, extremely worried. We fear the worst because she was doing so well, and she was so cheerful,” Crum said. “There’s just no way that she took off.”

Lueth was last seen by her friend Rick Stilgenbauer, who has subleased the apartment below her for the past five months. She recently broke up with her boyfriend, who had lived with her. He moved out of the apartment they shared between Nov. 6 and 11, Stilgenbauer said.

“She was dealing with everything how she always does — confidently and soundly,” he said. “She’s a very strong-headed woman, she takes care of business.”

Lueth and Stilgenbauer talked in his kitchen Nov. 11 between 5:30 and 6 p.m., after Lueth returned from class at MSU. She was concerned because her ex-boyfriend moved out and her rent would increase. She was planning to sell her truck and start working as a waitress to pay her bills, Stilgenbauer said.

“She was hopeful, sound, planning for the future,” he said.

After Lueth left his apartment, Stilgenbauer did not hear anything from her upstairs apartment.

“I didn’t hear anyone come back in or out, I never heard anyone leave after that. It was all very quiet,” he said.

Stilgenbauer and Lueth’s father, Roy Lueth, both called Krista Lueth on Nov. 12, but her phone went directly to voicemail.

“I’m in contact with Krista all the time,” her father said.

But when none of Krista Lueth’s friends or family could reach her, they were worried, Stilgenbauer said.

Roy Lueth drove to his daughter’s home Friday to look around and said her cat was alone in the apartment.

“She’d never leave her cat if she went anywhere,” he said.

Roy Lueth said he did not want to speculate about the disappearance.

“All we know at this point in time is that she’s missing, and has been since Tuesday,” her father said.

As the investigation moves forward, Krista Lueth’s family and friends are looking for answers.

“It’s a double-edged sword – as much as you want to know, you fear hearing,” Crum said. “You want answers, but they’re probably going to be answers we don’t want.”

Krista Lueth is 5 feet, 4 inches tall and weighs 125 pounds. She has brown hair and blue eyes, police said.

Anyone who has seen her or has any information is asked to contact the Michigan State Police at (517) 322-1907.

student's records

Lueth
Police have executed warrants for phone and financial records of Krista R. Lueth, a 34-year-old MSU student who has been missing for more than three weeks.

“We go where the case takes us; we are still interviewing everyone,” Michigan State Police Sgt. Kevin Mark said. “Just doing normal police work, so we have executed warrants on the missing person case.”

It is standard procedure to review phone records, bank and credit card statements in missing person cases. Police are looking to see who contacted Lueth, if she contacted anyone since her disappearance and if she still is spending money, Mark said.

“We contact everyone that deals with the financial stuff to make sure what’s on the reports is factual,” he said.

Lueth, who is pursuing her second bachelor’s degree in horticulture, was last seen by her neighbor and friend of eight years, Rick Stilgenbauer. Stilgenbauer has rented a unit below Lueth’s in a home on the 1100 block of Eureka Street in Lansing for the past five months.

Lueth’s apartment looked as though she had left but was intending to return, he said.

“It looked like she just stepped out to get cigarettes or a loaf of bread,” Stilgenbauer said.

Police are still interviewing anyone who might have come into contact with Lueth since her disappearance, he said.

Lueth’s father, Roy Lueth, 67, said his role in the investigation has decreased after a whirlwind two weeks during the initial stages of the investigation. During that time, he drove from his home in St. Clair to Lansing every day to give interviews and information to police, he said.

“Since that time, they’ve had to do their investigation,” Roy Lueth said. “I check in with them and am seeking counseling with people down here. I see my son, talk to my other daughter — I’m just trying to keep it together.”

Krista Lueth’s friends and family said her apartment showed she had no intention of leaving.

A pot of mold-covered food was left on her stove when Stilgenbauer and two other friends entered the apartment to look for her.

The hardest part of the whole experience is simply the lack of noise coming from above his apartment, Stilgenbauer said.

“It’s dizzily quiet, I’m used to the hustle and bustle of people living upstairs and that’s ceased,” he said. “And now it’s completely quiet. It’s a morbid quiet.”

Family still awaits word on missing MSU student
By Kyle Feldscher
The State News
Published: January 13, 2009

As the search for missing MSU horticulture student Krista Lueth enters a third month, friends and family are awaiting closure to a painful process.

Roy Lueth, Krista Lueth’s father, said Monday he’s hoping the $5,000 in reward money he has offered for information will help lead to her discovery, whether she is found alive or dead. Although police continue investigating the case as a missing persons case, Roy Lueth said he has given up hope of finding his daughter alive.

“We’re trying to find out where her body is,” Roy Lueth said. “It’s not a fact that she’s dead, it’s just my opinion.”

Krista Lueth, 34, was last seen Nov. 11 by her friend of eight years, Rick Stilgenbauer. He has lived in the unit below Lueth on the 1100 block of Eureka Street in Lansing since last summer.

Detective Sgt. Kevin Mark of the Michigan State Police said in December that in order to change the case from missing persons to homicide, police would need some sort of evidence that Krista Lueth is dead. State police also are offering a $5,000 reward for tips leading to Krista Lueth’s discovery.

Mark, the lead investigator in the case, could not be reached for comment on Monday.

Crime Stoppers of Mid-Michigan, a nonprofit organization that works with police to get information on open cases, is offering a $1,000 reward for any information leading to Krista Lueth’s discovery.

Horticulture junior Kathy Koch, who organized a candlelight vigil for Lueth in December, said she’s still hopeful that Lueth’s body will be found, but like Roy Lueth, she does not believe Krista Lueth will be found alive.

“I’m a realist,” Koch said. “I think her family deserves some type of closure from a human standpoint.”

Roy Lueth said police investigating the case have done
their best to keep him informed.

“They have to be tight-lipped so things don’t get out that can hurt the case later on, assuming they find her and the person who did this to her,”
 he said.

Koch said even though not everyone in the Department of Horticulture knew Krista
Lueth personally, her disappearance has affected
many people.

“I know I just talked to (professor) Art Cameron’s wife, and they’re still really affected,” Koch said. “(Lueth) was going to be working for him, so it really bothers her.”

Roy Lueth said he had a message for the person who has kidnapped his daughter.

“Just tell us where she is so we can put her to rest,” he said. “We just want closure.”

Anyone with information on Krista Lueth’s disappearance should call the Michigan State Police Lansing Post at 517-322-1907 or Crime Stoppers at 517-483-7867.

Missing woman believed killed
Police: Slaying of MSU student, 34, who vanished last Nov. not random

Del.icio.usFacebookDiggRedditNewsvineBuzz up!TwitterRoy Lueth wants the chance to bury his daughter, who disappeared last November and who police now say was the victim of a homicide.

For the first time since 34-year-old Krista Lueth was reported missing, police said Wednesday they believe someone killed her and that it was not a random act.
The Michigan State University student's body has never been found. Investigators hope publicity about the case leads to tips or new information.
"If they could just get a break, we could at least put her to rest," Roy Lueth said.
"Whoever did this has talked to someone," he added. "Somebody out there knows something. Or has seen something."
Up to $15,000 in reward money is now being offered to anyone who provides information that leads to an arrest and conviction.
Krista Lueth was last seen Nov. 11, 2008 at the house she rented in the 1100 block of Eureka Street in Lansing.
It is believed she left the house that night between 6:30 p.m. and 7 p.m, possibly wearing a long black coat. Investigators do not know where she was going.
Her father, who lives in St. Clair, said he has been trying to figure that out since he reported her missing four days later.
Detective First Lt. Dan Pekrul, who is heading a team of Michigan State Police investigators working on the case, said they have identified a person of interest. He would not say how the person knew Lueth.
Pekrul said investigators are trying to find anyone who might have seen Lueth - who had long brown hair and blue eyes - the evening of Nov. 11.
Maybe someone saw a woman fitting her description crying or involved in an argument, he said.
"We just need more pieces of the puzzle," he said. "Who saw her, and where, after she left her (home)."
Police also are asking hunters and others who are out in area woods and fields to be on the lookout for clothing or a coat that seems out of place. That could lead to her body.
"We want them to keep this case in the back of their minds and contact law enforcement," Pekrul said.
Roy Lueth said he has filled his home with Krista's things, including souvenirs and photographs from places they visited - Chicago, Niagara Falls, South Africa.
He called Krista, who he raised on his own since she was about 12, his best friend.
She was working on a second bachelor's degree, in horticulture, and was planning to attend graduate school in that field.
When she left her home the evening of Nov. 11, she locked the door, leaving her cat inside, according to friends. An overhead light was left on in the living room and she left a pan of food on the stove, covered by a plate.
"She went with someone she trusted," Roy Lueth said.
