Detectives search car, building in connection with missing woman

Rachael Anderson
April 23, 2010, 4:58 pm

Detectives have searched both a car and a building where a Clarkston woman was last seen in an attempt to pinpoint her whereabouts.

The disappearance of Rachael L. Anderson, 40, continues to be the subject of a multi-county investigation one week after her disappearance in Moscow April 16.

Anderson was reported missing Monday when she failed to show up for work at Pathologist Regional Laboratory in Lewiston.

Clarkston Police Chief Joel Hastings said the investigation of a task force formed earlier this week has yet to lead detectives to where Anderson might be. Personal items collected from the 1997 GMC Yukon she was driving and from the Moscow building where she was last seen are being sent to the Idaho State Police crime lab for analysis, he said.

Hastings has referred to the investigation as a suspicious missing person case. Anderson is described as a 5-foot-4-inch white woman who weighs 120 pounds. She has black hair and brown eyes.

Anyone with information on Anderson's location is asked to call the Clarkston Police Department at (509) 758-2331.

Flyers seeking information about Anderson's whereabouts have been posted in this two-city region that straddles the Snake River.

Missing woman seen in Moscow on day she disappeared

CLARKSTON, WA -- Investigators are piecing together a timeline that’s helping them learn what Rachael Anderson was doing in the days right before she disappeared.
user posted image
A week ago Friday Anderson went missing. Originally police thought she was last seen leaving her Clarkston home in a white GMC Yukon but Friday investigators said she was seen in Moscow Friday evening.

Clarkston police said they searched a building in Moscow but would not elaborate at to what they think Anderson was doing there. Anderson's oldest daughter, Amber Griswold, says she has no idea where her mother could be but is trying to be positive.

"We're trying to keep our hopes up and hopefully it turns out good," Amber said.

Thursday the Missing Persons Task Force searched a building in Moscow where Anderson was last seen Friday night. Clarkston Chief of Police Joel Hastings says they can't say what type of building it is or what the connection is to Anderson.

"Anything they found that they think might be helpful or of value has been sent to the crime lab," Chief Hastings said.

Anderson’s family has converged into the area from all across the Northwest to aid in the search. Griswold says she just can't sit and wait by the phone. She has set up a Facebook page, organized a candlelight vigil and continues to search the field where police tracked her mother's cell phone.

"Just keep your eye out, keep spreading the word. If anybody saw her or the vehicle over the weekend report it so we can figure out where she went," Amber said.

Family believes missing mom was stalked with texts, phone calls

Posted on April 29, 2010 at 10:41 AM
CLARKSTON, Wash. -- The family of a missing Clarkston woman says Rachel Anderson, 40, was stalked for weeks by an unknown caller to her cell phone.

Clarkston Police believe Anderson's disappearance is suspicious. She was reported missing on April 19. For the Anderson family, they say each day is an emotional struggle as the search drags on.

Clarkston Police are combing through Rachel Anderson's cell phone records hoping to find clues about her disappearance. The last time anyone saw her was the evening of Friday, April 16. Detectives traveled to Moscow, Idaho and searched a building where Anderson was last seen.

Detectives were in touch with Anderson well before she disappeared because she had filed several harassment complaints with police. Her family says for months someone was texting her strange messages, calling her, and then hanging up. They fear who ever was harassing her, kidnapped her.

"She was confused, scared, didn't know who it was," Anderson's daughter, Amber Griswold told KREM 2 News. "She was very afraid for her life, we had many conversations where we talking about how this could end in her death."

Anderson's white, 1997 GMC Yukon was found last week at a bus stop behind the Dyna gas station in North Lewiston. Police found her phone over the weekend, but there has been no sign of her since. Out of town relatives have flown in from as far away as Wisconsin to pass out fliers and posters with Anderson's picture, hoping someone has seen her. Her sister is praying for the best, but worries Anderson is hurt.

Anderson lived in Clarkston with her two young sons. Her family is asking that the farmers and large landowners keep an eye out for her. They are hoping to set up a cash reward for information on the case.

Anderson is 5'4", 125 pounds with brown hair and black eyes.

Call Clarkston Police at 509-758-2331 if you can help.

Missing Idaho woman's husband arrested for firearms violation

Posted on May 7, 2010 at 10:55 AM

MOSCOW, Idaho -- The husband of a missing Clarkston mother was arrested Thursday morning for violating a federal firearms law.

ATF agents from Spokane arrested Charles Capone at his work place in Moscow, Idaho around 10:00 a.m. Capone was recently estranged from his missing wife, Rachel Anderson, 40. Anderson was last heard from on Friday, April 16.

Officials say Capone is a convicted felon, and was breaking federal law by possessing a firearm.

Capone and Anderson were in the process of getting a divorce. Anderson had filed harassment charges against him prior to her disappearance.

Anderson's daughter, Amber Griswold, told KREM 2 News her mother was stalked for weeks by an unknown caller to her cell phone, sending mysterious text messages implying someone was watching her.

Thursdsay, Griswold told KREM 2 News she believes Capone had something to do with the stalking of her mother. Griswold claims Capone kept Anderson isolated from her family after she tried to break up the marriage, and believes he physically abused her.

Anderson's cell phone and SUV were found abandoned in a field in Lewiston on Wednesday, April 21.

Capone has not been named a suspect by investigators in Anderson's disappearance.

Capone will be transferred to the Federal Courthouse in Coeur d'Alene. He will appear in federal court Friday morning.

Judge orders Capone remain in custody
Rob Kauder | Internet Content Manager, KXLY.com
Posted: 5:02 pm PDT May 10, 2010

COEUR D'ALENE -- A Monday afternoon court hearing for Charles Capone on a weapons charge painted a very disturbing picture of a man who has been prone to violent threats against women in the past.

Capone was arrested recently on an ATF charge for being a felon in possession of a firearm. At the same time his estranged wife, Rachael Anderson, has been missing for several weeks. The couple separated in early January after an incident where Anderson said that Capone strangled her.

During Monday’s court hearing it was revealed that Capone has had a history of violence against women. In 1997 he reportedly threatened a Moscow, Idaho doctor, telling her that he would break into her home, rape her and her daughter and then kill himself. Capone also has an ex-wife in Florida and in 2006 he reportedly stood over her with a screwdriver and threatened to kill her.

Members of Anderson’s family, who were in court Monday for the detention hearing, say they’re relieved that Capone is being kept in jail and were not surprised by the revelations of his history of violence and threats of violence against women.

Rachael Anderson had told family members – and the Clarkston Police Department – in the days and weeks prior to her disappearance that she feared for her life. She said that she was being stalked, her tires on her vehicle were slashed and she had been receiving prank calls, all incidents she reported to the police.

Not long after family members reported her missing investigators found her cellphone and vehicle. She was last seen in Moscow on April 16th.

It was also revealed that Capone, a three-time convicted felon, has an outstanding warrant for unpaid child support out of Arizona.

A federal judge ordered during Monday’s detention hearing that Capone be kept in custody on the firearms charge.

Investigators: video shows Rachael Anderson apparently did not get on bus

Story Updated: Jun 9, 2010 at 8:31 AM PDT
By Stephanie Smith Watch the video

CLARKSTON - Lewiston Police say they have reviewed over 24 hours of surveillance video from the bus stop in North Lewiston where they discovered the SUV missing Clarkston woman Rachael Anderson was last seen driving.

Asotin County Sheriff's Office Captain Dan Hally, an investigator working with the task force dedicated to the case, said that to their knowledge, Anderson did not get on a bus.

The GMC Yukon Anderson was last known to be driving was found on April 21st. She has been missing since April 16th.

Hally said the task force is actively working on the case and following up on tips. He said a tip last week led them to search the Clearwater River with the help of the Nez Perce County Sheriff's Office Dive team after a boater spotted something on his fish finder.

It turned out to be wood debris.

Hally said he hopes the public continues to keep the case in mind and call 509-758-2331 if you've seen something suspicious or have any information.

What Happened to Rachael Anderson?
Posted: Jun 23, 2010 12:48 PM EDT
Updated: Jun 23, 2010 5:40 PM EDT
LEWISTON, Idaho (AP) - Detectives say the pace of tips about the whereabouts of a missing woman last seen in April has slowed.

Meanwhile, Rachael Anderson's estranged husband the last known person to see her remains in an Idaho jail awaiting separate federal weapons charges.

Anderson has been missing since April 16. Early this year, the Clarkston, Wash., resident petitioned for divorce after alleging her husband, Charles A. Capone, strangled and shoved her.

The tips are still coming in, but "it's obviously a lot slower than it was to begin with," says Clarkston Police Detective Dan Combs.

Amber Griswold, Anderson's oldest daughter, says waiting for word of her mother has been difficult for the family. Anderson's birthday earlier this month was especially tough.

Rachael Anderson's Family Preparing For Solemn Christmas
Tania Dall | KXLY4 Reporter

Text SizeAAACLARKSTON, Wash. -- With Christmas just days away, the family of a missing Clarkston woman is bracing for a holiday without their mother and grandmother.

Rachael Anderson was last seen in April near Moscow and hasn't been seen or heard from since.

Anderson's family would normally celebrate Christmas at the 40-year-old's house but since her disappearance the holidays and life haven't been the same.

"We've had that one since I was a little girl, it's very old," explained Amber Griswold, sitting in her living room, looking at her mother's Christmas tree, adorned with ornaments. The tree isn't real and that's how Rachael Anderson would like it.

"We never cut down trees because she didn't want to kill trees." said Griswold. That was just one of many holiday traditions Anderson shared with her kids.

"Usually we go to my mom's house. She always gets everyone pajamas for Christmas and slippers. Then she makes a huge brunch the next morning," Griswold said. She's expecting the holiday to be different this year. Amber and her family still don't know what happened to Rachael.

"What's important about Christmas is not the gifts or the giving or getting presents. It's about spending time with your family and that's important to me and we're missing a big chunk, its hard", she said.

Before her disappearance in April 16th, Anderson was being stalked by a stranger and had contacted police. Her family knew something was wrong when she didn't show up to work.

Her car, wallet, and cell phone would later be discovered abandoned in a field. Anderson's estranged husband Charles Capone - the last person to see her alive - was later arrested on an unrelated federal weapons charge.

As Christmas draws near, Anderson's family can't help but hope for miracle.

"I don't want people to forget and i know there are some people out there that know what happened," Griswold said.

The Clarkston Police Department and the Rachael Anderson Task Force is still investigating the case.

Search for Rachael Anderson continues

Rachael Anderson has been missing for 11 months.
By Stephanie Smith Story Published: Mar 5, 2011 at 2:08 PM PDT
(Story Updated: Mar 5, 2011 at 2:08 PM PDT )

LEWISTON - Rachael Anderson went missing almost 11 months ago. And the Asotin County Sheriff's Office said the case is still an active one.

Multimedia Watch The Video "The main part of the investigation right now is we're awaiting lab results. We are starting to get results back from the Idaho State Lab," said Captain Dan Hally. "Those results we believe will be beneficial to the resolution of this case. We're still awaiting some lab results from the Washington State Lab."

Hally said items from various locations, including the SUV last driven by Anderson, are being tested.

"We just have to keep in mind that the lab is an over-stretched resource, both Idaho State and Washington State Lab. They're moving as quick as they can," said Hally. "And they have to be thorough. We don't want them to hurry things. That wouldn't serve anybody well. And so we understand and we are as patient as we can be, but we certainly do understand the frustrations of the family and how long this process can take."

Hally said they are continuing to follow up on leads.

"We continue to search sites that we come up with information, possible locations for Rachael," said Hally. "Just this last weekend we searched a site in the Moscow area. There were negative results, but we still haven't ruled that site out."

Hally said they have not spoken with Anderson's estranged husband Charles Capone recently. He's in prison on an unrelated federal firearms charge.

"He does remain a person of interest in this case and we'll just have to see where the evidence leads us," said Hally.

Rachel Anderson Update: Daughter shares missing mom’s story, asks for help in finding her
May 1, 9:42 AM
Seattle Headlines Examiner
Isabelle Zehnder

May 1, 2010 - “My mother is a strong, intelligent, vivacious woman who everyone loves and misses dearly,” Ashley said. “She has two young sons who live with her and are heartbroken by her disappearance. We all need her home safely. Please help us in our search!”

Rachel Anderson went missing Friday, April 16, and her daughter, Ashley Colbert, shared her mom’s story on Facebook and is asking everyone’s help in finding her missing mom.

Ashley says her mom was last seen in Moscow, Idaho, on April 16, 2010.

Rachel is 40 years old, is 5’4”, 120 lbs., has a small stature, black hair, and brown eyes. She is pleading for everyone’s help in finding Rachel.

She said her mother is a mom, a grandmother, an aunt, a sister, and a friend. She brightened everyone’s day.

Ashley and her sister, Amber Griswold, are searching for their missing mother. Rachel has two young sons, ages 6 and 11. Her grandchildren are 5, 4, 2, and 16 months.

Rachel, of Clarkston, Washington, is missing under suspicious circumstances.

Ashley and Amber reported Rachel missing on Monday, April 19, after she failed to make it to work and they were unable to contact her. This behavior, Ashley says, is very uncharacteristic for their mother.

“The past three months have been a nightmare for her,” Ashley said. “She was a victim of stalking and feared for her life. The stalking compelled her to sleep in the living room of her home with the lights on instead sleeping in her own bedroom. Many times she would have a friend stay over with her because she was so scared.”

This all started about three months ago, Ashley said, with phone calls. At first her mom would receive phone calls and no one would respond. The calls progressed and Rachel could hear music playing in the background that was muffled, but no one would speak on the phone.

She then began receiving phone calls from various telephone numbers with disguised voices. The disguised voices, Ashley said, would tell her what she was doing, what specific lights were on in her home, as if Rachel’s every move were being watched.

“During this time my mom had the lock to her shed broken off, eerily men’s cologne was present on her front porch at night, her vehicle tires were slashed in front of her home, and the back windshield of her vehicle was broken in broad daylight at the parking lot of her employer,” Ashley said.

“She had reported this information to law enforcement as she feared for her life,” she continued. “Multiple police reports were filed and she was working with a police detective with whom she checked in with everyday.”

During a phone conversation with Clarkston Police Chief Joel Hastings on Friday, Chief Hastings told Examiner.com that Rachel had filed a couple harassment-type reports with the Clarkston Police Department before she went missing.

Hastings also said Rachel was in contact with the Asotin County Sheriff's Department and was planning to meet with them the day she was reported missing to discuss her case.

“On the day that my sister and I reported our mother missing,” Rachel said, “our mother was supposed to meet with detectives to try and find out who was stalking and harassing her. Interestingly, my mother also had documented information which she was compiling together that is now missing.”

A good point was raised on the Facebook page created for Rachel: Did threatening cell phone calls and texts stop after Rachel went missing? Examiner.com has sent an email to Chief Hastings posing this question.

Due to the investigation, it is unclear if this is something police will be able to share with media. If so, an update will be provided.

Ashley said that the vehicle her mom was last seen driving was located on Wednesday, April 21, at a local gas station/bus stop. Chief Hastings confirmed a search warrant was issued and executed for the vehicle.

According to Ashley, another search warrant was executed on the building where her mom was last seen.

She said the FBI should have become involved with the case on April 26.

“My mother is a strong, intelligent, vivacious woman who everyone loves and misses dearly,” Ashley said. “She has two young sons who live with her and are heartbroken by her disappearance. We all need her home safely. Please help us in our search!”

ASOTIN COUNTY--Two years after Rachael Anderson disappeared her daughters are looking for closure.

Coast Guard Joins Search for Woman, Missing Since 2010, In Snake River
Posted by George Prentice on Wed, Jan 8, 2014 at 9:49 AM

Crews from the U.S. Coast Guard and Lewiston-Clarkston Valley law enforcement will return to the dark, cold waters of the Snake River today in their search for a woman who has been missing for more than three years.

This morning's Lewiston Tribune reports that the Coast Guard has brought in specialized remotely operated deep-water equipment in the search. The equipment has been previously used in water as deep as 1,000 feet.

The Tribune reports that the Coast Guard is using the search for training, while local law enforcement uses it as a new opportunity to search for remains of Rachael Anderson, who was allegedly thrown over the rail of the Red Wolf Crossing Bridge in April 2010. Anderson's estranged husband, Charles Capone, is facing murder and conspiracy charges in connection with her death. An acquaintance of Capone told investigators that he helped dispose of Anderson's body in the river.

"Some divers think she may have gone straight down and others think she could have been carried by the current or covered by sand waves at the bottom and buried," Detective Jackie Nichols of the Asotin County (Wash.) Sheriff's Office told the Tribune. "The only way to find out is to start where we think the body went in the river. If we don't find her, we'll continue searching downstream as resources are available."

The water is approximately 55-feet deep and very murky.
