Story Updated: Apr 6, 2009 at 11:02 PM MDT
By KBCI Web Staff, Kiersten Throndsen Video BOISE - A New Zealand native living in Boise for several months may be missing and his family is asking anyone with information to call a hotline.

Peter O'Brien's family and friends say they have no idea where he is but something just doesn't seem right.

O'Brien's family says he recently moved from Southern California to be closer to his two sons. They say he's never left without telling someone where he is going and that's what makes this time so strange.

In store fronts and posted on windows missing person sign blanket Hyde Park, each one a plea for help from O'Brien's family.

"I just can't imagine him running away, so I think something must have happened to him," said Suzanne Oppenheimer, O'Brien's ex-wife.

Oppenheimer says she last saw him Thursday evening when he dropped off their two young sons.

"There was nothing that made me think 'Oh my, there is something wrong with Pete,'" she said.

On Saturday when she called to find out when he would be picking up the kids no one answered.

"Fifty calls later he stilled hadn't return any calls so finally I went up there with my six year old just to check on him, make sure he was okay," says Oppenheimer.

But she says the door to his apartment was unlocked and inside she found his keys, wallet with his credit cards, and his cell phone all left on the counter.

"His bags are at home, his shoes are at home, his clothes are at home, his jacket is at home, so I don't know where he could be," Oppenheimer said.

Boise Police say they are investigating O'Brien's disappearance and right now there is no evidence a crime has been committed.

But Oppenheimer says it's hard not knowing what to do or what to say especially when it comes to their two sons.

"I don't want my kids to grow up without a dad," she said.

O'Brien is described as 5'8'', about 160 pounds, with short black hair. He has a New Zealand accent.

If you have any information on his whereabouts you are urged to call a tipline his friends have set up #936-2722.

You can also call Crime Stoppers at #343-COPSs.

O'Brien's apartment manager says he did pay his rent on the first day of April. Oppenheimer believes that is an indication he was planning to stay.

No clues to missing Kiwi

Aerial and ground searches of bush close to the United States home of missing New Zealander Peter O'Brien have failed to turn up any clues.

Father-of-two Mr O'Brien, 44, has been missing from his home in Boise, Idaho, since last Thursday, when his ex-wife Suzanne Oppenheimer last saw him.

Ms Oppenheimer said she expected Mr O'Brien to pick up his five and six-year-old sons on Saturday and went round to his place when he did not show up.

When she arrived at his apartment, she found the door unlocked and his wallet, car keys and cellphone inside. His car was parked in the drive.

Ms Oppenheimer said today both ground and aerial search teams had been scouring a wilderness area directly behind Mr O'Brien's home but had not found any clues to his sudden disappearance.

Detectives were also in the process of checking airports and Mr O'Brien's bank records in order to find if he had left the local area.

"The police are now beginning to take the case seriously," she said.

Ms Oppenheimer's brother told US media Mr O'Brien usually called if he was going to be late to collect his sons and his disappearance was "definitely out of character".

Mr O'Brien, who was originally from Wellington, had been living in the US since 2000 after making a move from Australia.

Mr O'Brien's brother and one of his sisters have flown to the US to help with the search.

His mother and his other sister both still lived in New Zealand.

Search Continues for Missing Boise Man

April 6, 2009 07:59 PM CDT

Boise, Idaho -- It's been nearly a week since Peter O'Brien, 44, simply vanished.

O'Brien was last seen on Thursday evening after he dropped off his two young boys at his ex-wife's house. He never returned to pick them up on Saturday, leaving his door unlocked with his keys, wallet and cell phone inside, his car still parked out front.

His ex-wife filed a missing person report on Sunday and now, nearly a week since he was last heard from, there's still no clues as to what happened to O'Brien.

"Peter has vanished into thin air. It's extraordinary," said Michael O'Brien, Peter's brother. "One moment he was there, the next moment he was gone and there's no trace of him."

Both Michael, of Australia, and Patricia, of Italy, Peter's brother and sister, got the first flight to Boise once they found out about his disappearance and wasted no time jumping into the search.

"I spent hours up there (at Camel's Back Park) on my mountain bike checking out the trails, the police have done search and rescue, an airplane flyover," said Michael.

Still all of that has not turned up any real leads, so the investigation continues while the clock ticks away.

"We're desperate to find out anything we can," said Michael.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crimestoppers at 343-COPS.

Peter O'Brien isn't in any of his usual haunts. He hasn't been clicking away on a laptop computer in Downtown coffee shops, walking in the Foothills or playing with his sons near his North End apartment.

He's vanished.

The 44-year-old was last seen by his ex-wife in Boise on April 2. Suzanne Oppenheimer reported him missing after he failed to pick up his boys on April 4.

What happened to the movie sound designer is a mystery.

Is he a victim of foul play?

Is he running away from someone or something?

Did a traumatic event force him to leave?

It's been more than a month, and friends, family and police aren't sure.

'THE PIECES DON'T FIT'

O'Brien's wallet, keys and cell phone were left at his apartment near Camel's Back Park. He'd paid his rent for April. He'd spent time with his sons and talked to family members overseas. He accepted a job.

Then he disappeared.

Michael O'Brien told the Idaho Statesman last week that not knowing what has happened to his brother is agonizing.

"It's a mystery," he said. "There are all sorts of theories, some of which would give hopes to the family, and some are worst-case scenarios, but the pieces don't fit."

So far, the case is inconclusive, Boise police spokeswoman Lynn Hightower said.

There is evidence that O'Brien might have walked away from his life.

"The detectives do have some direction they are going with. It wasn't leading toward foul play or suicide," Hightower said. "He is an adult, and if he is not doing something otherwise criminal, he has a right to be where he wants to be and do what he wants to do."

NEW TO BOISE

O'Brien took a winding path to Boise. He is originally from New Zealand and lived in New York as a child.

He graduated from the Australian Film Television and Radio School and played saxophone in a professional jazz band. He developed a reputation as a good cook, especially of fish curry.

He and Suzanne were married in Queensland, Australia, nearly 10 years ago, according to court records. Two children followed. The couple separated while living in Vermont, and Suzanne came to Boise. Peter lived in Los Angeles and worked in the film and video game industry. Their divorce was finalized in mid-March.

He came to Boise about seven weeks before he disappeared to be closer to his sons, Michael O'Brien said.

"He absolutely adored them," Michael O'Brien said. "His sole reason for moving to Boise was so he could spend more time with his boys."

A week before Peter disappeared, he had his usual weekly chat with his brother, who said nothing seemed amiss. Peter had just accepted a new work assignment from sound designer Martin Lopez, a longtime friend in Los Angeles.

FRIENDS BAFFLED

Still, O'Brien was under a lot of stress from the divorce and seemed to have some kind of money trouble, Lopez said. Court documents show O'Brien made about $30,000 in the year before the divorce.

"If he disappeared of his own will, which is what I tend to believe, I think stresses became unbearable - financial stresses and emotional stresses with Suzanne and just being a dad and managing two rambunctious boys," Lopez said.

Lopez was told O'Brien took a small amount of money from bank accounts before he disappeared, and his passports are gone.

"For some reason, that all escalated at the end of March. Something pushed it over the top. It's not clear to me what it is," Lopez said.

Another lifelong friend, Carol Cumming of Melbourne, Australia, said she can't imagine a scenario in which Peter would walk away from his family.

"It's just a genuine mystery because none of the pieces fit," said Cumming, who regularly spoke to O'Brien.

"Nobody tap-dances their way through a divorce. He had maybe a rough year, but he certainly was through the hardest yards of that," Cumming said.

She said being a father was important to him.

"He lost a father when he was quite young. He always said it was really important for him to be part of the boys' lives because he missed his own dad," Cumming said.

THE SEARCH CONTINUES

In early April, O'Brien's family converged in Idaho from Australia and Italy to plead for help in finding him. Friends have created a Web site and sent fliers to cities, hospitals and hostels around the country.

"We continue to have serious concerns about Peter's health and safety, and for Peter's sake and for the sake of his children and family we are hopeful he will be located soon and that he will return to be a part of his boys' future," Jonathan Oppenheimer, Suzanne's brother and family spokesman, said.

Suzanne Oppenheimer, Peter's ex-wife, declined an interview with the Statesman.

But Michael O'Brien said things were looking up for his brother, and he knew if O'Brien needed financial help he would have received it. So his disappearance is "uncharacteristic."

"We have found no indication of travel," Michael O'Brien said. "We have found no evidence to suggest that Peter went anywhere else. There is nothing. ... You can't reach any conclusion (based on whether) he had his passport or whether or not he had any money. It's not possible. People are just speculating."

Michael O'Brien is still asking the people of Boise to help find his brother.

"It's something you read about that happens to someone else, but not to you. ... It's only when something happens like this - when it happens to you - then you notice how often things can go badly in families," Michael O'Brien said. "We want some information to help us find Peter and find out where he is and what has happened."

Boise man reported missing
04/06/2009

BOISE - A north end Boise man has been reported missing and his friends and family are appealing to the community for information. Peter O'Brien, 45, apparently left his apartment near Camel's Back park with no wallet or car keys sometime Thursday or Friday. It is possible he went for a walk in that area and ran into some kind of trouble, said his friend, Martin Lopez, who lives in Los Angeles.

"My horrible concern is he rolled down some ravine or something, hit his head or broke his leg and is unable to extricate himself," Lopez said. Lopez said he and others are mystified at O'Brien's disappearance. Flyers have been posted around the Camel's Back Park area and in his neighborhood.

"It's just like he vanished off the planet. It's just unnerving to see someone vanish like this," Lopez said.

Lopez told the Idaho Press-Tribune that when he didn't show up to pick up his two boys on Saturday morning, his ex-wife went to his apartment near Camel's Back park and found his apartment door unlocked. Inside she found his wallet, car keys and cell phone. His car was parked in the driveway.

She filed a missing persons report with Boise police Sunday, Lopez said.

O'Brien is 5 foot 8 inches tall, has a fair complexion and weighs approximately 160 pounds. He has short cut black hair and speaks with a New Zealand accent. He frequents coffee shops in the Camel's Back park area, often working on his laptop.

Boise Police Department communications director Lynn Hightower confirmed O'Brien's disappearance is under investigation as a missing persons case, but there is no indication of foul play and no evidence he is in any danger.

Lopez said O'Brien has two young sons who are "worried beyond reason" about their missing father. "It's more questions than answers," Lopez said. "But we're trying to get his picture out as much as we can."

Lopez said he and O'Brien had scheduled work together this coming week.

Anyone with information can leave a message on a tip line set up by Lopez at (208) 936-2722 or call Crime Stoppers at 208-343-COPS.

North End Boise Man Disappears; Help Needed
The disappearance of a Boise man is a complete mystery. It's as if he evaporated.

By Jill Kuraitis, 4-06-09

Boise resident Peter O’Brien disappeared Thursday evening April 2nd from the area of Camel’s Back Park in north Boise, near the Hyde Park neighborhood where he lives.

O’Brien, father of two boys, was a familiar figure in Hyde Park, where he often works on his laptop in coffee shops, and takes walks in the park.

O’Brien is in his mid-40s, is 5’8” tall and 160 pounds, and has short black hair. He speaks with a New Zealand accent.

His brother-in-law, Jonathan Oppenheimer, a well-known executive with the Idaho Conservation League, says there are no clues why O’Brien has vanished. “He wasn’t tied up with bad people. There were no signs of anything that would have hinted this was coming.”

Oppenheimer and the family have sent out this flyer with specific information, and are asking the public to print and post as many as possible.

If you’ve seen O’Brien, or have any clues from last Thursday, please call the tip voicemail line at 208-936-2722, or the Boise Police Department at 208-377-6790.

Boise Father Missing
April 6, 2009 08:59 PM EDT

Boise, Idaho -- Here one day, gone the next.

That's what seems to have happened to a Boise man. Friends and family members of Peter O'Brien, 44, say he simply vanished.

He was last seen Thursday after he dropped off his two children at his ex-wife Suzanne Oppenheimer's house. O'Brien was supposed to pick them up again on Saturday but never showed, so Suzanne went to check on him.

"His cell phone, his wallet, his keys are all sitting on the kitchen counter," said Oppenheimer. "His car is parked outside of his apartment, but there's no sign of Pete."

The only thing that appears to be missing is his laptop, which he used for work as a sound and audio editor for films.

"We're really at a loss here to try and figure out what's going on," said Jonathan Oppenheimer, O'Brien's brother-in-law.

Friends and family members say this is out of character, that O'Brien would not just leave without telling anyone. Now the search is on to find this New Zealand native who loved hiking in the foothills, specifically the area of Camel's Back Park.

"That's one of the possible scenarios here, that he went for a hike and fell or got hurt or injured," said Jonathan.

"I just fear for his safety and I don't want my kids to grow up without a dad," said Suzanne.

A missing person's report has been filed with Boise Police. Since there are no signs of foul play, no evidence of a crime, there isn't much that can be done. Therefore, Peter's family is turning to the public looking for clues as to what may have happened to this father of two.

"I'm going to have to tell them (his kids) I don't know where he is," said Suzanne.

O'Brien moved here full time about seven weeks ago. Before that, he was splitting time between Boise and Los Angeles. Family members say he spent a lot of time in Camel's Back Park and in coffee shops working on his laptop.

If you've seen O'Brien or have any information on his whereabouts, call Crimestoppers at 208-343-COPS.

BOISE - Family and friends of Peter O'Brien are pleading for help. His brother and sister arrived in Boise Tuesday in hopes of finding their missing brother.

Expressions of concern is evident in their faces and their voices.

"I'm very, very worried because he doesn't just walk away from responsibilities," said Patricia O'Brien, Peter's sister.

Patricia and her other brother Michael O'Brien are desperate to find their younger brother Peter.

"I became extremely concerned because it's out of character for him not to turn up to collect his boys, it's just not the sort of thing he does," said Michale.

Both say they wouldn't have come from their homes in Australia and Italy if they did not think something was wrong.

"It's completely out of character," said Patricia.

Peter was last seen Thursday when he dropped his two young sons off with his ex-wife. His family says he recently moved to Boise to be closer to his boys.

When asked if Patricia thinks he may have just up and left, she responded: "I can't even imagine it, I can't imagine that scenario."

They say what else is strange in this case is Peter's door to his apartment was left unlocked, his keys, wallet with credit cards, and cell phone all inside.

"You have to be positive but the circumstances are extremely unusual, we are extremely concerned," said Michael.

Boise Police are continuing to investigate but so far Peter's family says there are no solid leads in this case of their missing brother.

Peter O'Brien is described as 5'8'', about 160 pounds, with short black hair. He has a New Zealand accent.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is urged to call either a tip-line his friends have set up at 208-936-2722 or Crime Stoppers at 208-343-COPS.

His family says any information leading to an arrest or conviction of a suspect could be eligible for $1,000 dollar reward.

Ms Oppenheimer said she had no particular fears about the Mr O'Brien's mental state before he disappeared but that their relationship was strained.

"I'm just worried something bad has happened. I don't think anything good (has) happened.

"The police don't think he was abducted. They think perhaps he has killed himself."

Ms Oppenheimer said police had not yet discussed with her any plans to call off the search.

Mr O'Brien, who was originally from Wellington, had been living in the US since 2000 after making a move from Australia.

His brother and one of his sisters have flown to the US to help with the inquiry.
