3 local people still missing
Investigations continue into disappearances
By John Grant Emeigh - 01/07/2009

It's been a frustrating past year for investigators in Butte and Anaconda who have been working to solve three missing person cases.

The whereabouts of two adult females and one adult male remain unknown as of the new year.

Investigators are still seeking information on what happened to Brandy Christiansen, 46, of Butte, Helen Gracia, 45, of Anaconda, and Matt Hatfield, 49, of Butte, all of whom just seemed to vanish without a trace.

Butte police have been working on finding Christiansen and Hatfield.

Christiansen was last seen on Nov. 2, 2007, by friends in Butte. Since then, there's been no confirmed sighting of her, telephone calls from her and no activity involving her bank account.

Police found her blue 1991 Toyota Tercel abandoned on the road between Homestake Lake and Delmoe Lake on Nov. 14. The car was parked along the side of the road and there appeared to be no signs of foul play. Investigators said there were no tire tracks from the car in the snow, indicating the vehicle may have been parked there for several days.

In May 2008, dozens of searchers, along with a pair of search dogs, combed a wide area around where the woman's car was found. The effort turned up nothing.

As for Matt Hatfield, his sister reported him missing to police Dec. 23, 2008, after she hadn't seen or heard from him in three weeks. Hatfield was last seen by family on Nov. 28 or Nov. 29, living at his mother's residence at 415 Roosevelt Dr., where he was caring for her, police reported.

Police also have had little luck with the Hatfield case. Investigators searched the property and one of two cabins located just off the main house at the Roosevelt Drive property for evidence the last week in December. Despite these efforts, there is still no sign of the missing man.

Hatfield is described as a white male about 5 feet, 11 inches tall and weighing 180 pounds.

Capt. Doug Conway said a photograph of Hatfield will likely be made public by police next week.

Conway said these cases are frustrating, because there is no indication of what happened to these people.

"We're treating both these cases as criminal investigations until we find out otherwise," Conway said.

In Anaconda, Police Chief John Sullivan describes his missing person case from last summer as frustrating.

Gracia went missing May 23, 2008. Initial reports said she was last seen at the Rock Inn, an Anaconda bar. Family members have said earlier that day she had gone to buy medications and groceries for her mom.

In early June, police found her car outside the Anaconda Bar, the medications and spoiled groceries inside. Investigators questioned a "person of interest" with whom Gracia was seen at the Rock Inn, and discovered that later the night of May 23 she was at Carmel's Bar.

Sullivan said poster of Gracia are posted around town and she is listed on the Web site www.helpfindthemissing.org.

In August, the missing woman's family offered $10,000 for information leading to her whereabouts or the arrest and conviction of those involved should her disappearance be the result of a crime.

Sullivan said the case remains open.

"Without any new information, the case gets tougher and tougher to investigate," Sullivan said.

Reporter John Grant Emeigh may be reached via e-mail at john.emeigh@lee.net or by telephone, 496-5511.

You can help People with information about the disappearance of Brandy Christiansen or Matt Hatfield are asked to call police at 497-1120.

Anyone with information about Helen Gracia may call Anaconda police at 563-5241

Missing woman
Investigation continues
By The Standard Staff - 11/30/2007

Butte police have been heavily criticized in our online comments for not doing anything to find Brandy Lauren Christiansen, a 46-year-old Butte woman who’s been missing since Nov. 2.

Some have jumped to the conclusion that Christiansen was murdered, and one commenter wrote: “Unless the guilty party confesses or a body falls out of the sky and lands on the courthouse steps, this one is going to remain unsolved.” As it turns out, the criticisms are unwarranted, fortunately. Police have been working diligently. They just haven’t found anything that would lead them to conclude this is anything but a missing person case.

A search party was called out on Nov. 14, right after Christiansen’s Toyota was found between Homestake and Delmoe lakes.

Brad Belke, commander of the 15-90 Search and Rescue, said their best tracker, a highly trained team member of 25 years, went to the scene with police detectives and others, and they found plenty of animal tracks but “absolutely zero tracks” that had been made by humans.

“We were able to confirm that she had not walked into the forest,” Belke said. “We covered quite a bit of area around there just to make sure.” Searchers even went back a few days later and looked for more ominous signs such as crows, magpies, or coyotes that would be attracted to a dead body. Again — fortunately — nothing.

One piece of conflicting testimony still under investigation is whether Christiansen’s car had been moved. Search and rescue volunteers spoke with a group of hunters and with another man who regularly walks his dog around there, and both parties said they noticed the car had been parked in a few different places over the 10 or so days it was up there.

However, Detective Capt. Doug Conway said other witnesses swore the car was not moved, and no evidence of movement was found.

“Whether it was or it wasn’t, we don’t know,” Conway said.

The car has since been impounded and thoroughly searched, along with everything else the police had authority to search. Sheriff John Walsh also said detectives have looked into the backgrounds of every name given to them, including Christiansen’s ex-boyfriend.

“We feel that everybody we’ve talked to has been cooperative,” Walsh said. “At this point, we have not determined that foul play was involved.” Online commenters also questioned why police have not widely distributed Christiansen’s photo along with information about her missing status, and Walsh said there is no such thing as an “Amber Alert” for missing adults. Friends and family members can do outreach, but not authorities since adults have a legal right to disappear, and so far this is still just a missing person case.

“If you decide to leave and not talk to anyone for three months, you have every right to do so,” Walsh explained.

We hope all this information helps to clear the air, and we were as relieved as anyone to learn that police were all over this case. Understandably, they refuse to share details of their investigation since that could jeopardize any future charges if the nature of the case changes, but it’s reassuring to know they’re giving it the serious attention it surely deserves.

“I’m not going to let this thing go away until we’re satisfied that we’ve done everything we can do with it,” Conway said.

And of course new leads are always welcome. Christiansen is described as 5 feet, 1 inch tall, weighing 102 pounds, with blue eyes and short brown hair. She was taking classes at Montana Tech, and a friend from Missoula said the Chances R casino was one of her “main hangouts.” Anyone with information is asked to call police at 497-1120, or the Butte Crimestoppers at 782-7336.

Details of Disappearance
Christiansen was last seen in Butte-Silver Bow County, Montana on November 2, 2007. She has never been heard from again. A week after her disappearance, her blue 1991 Toyota Tercel with Montana license plates numbered 1C-8609 was found on Delmoe Lake Road in Homestake Pass. It was undamaged with no signs of foul play, and women's clothing was in the backseat. There were no tire tracks in the snow around the vehicle, indicating it had been parked there for several days. Authorities were unable to search the area at the time due to bad weather. When they finally conducted a search in May 2008, they found no clues as to Christiansen's whereabouts.

Christiansen was a student at Montana Tech at the time of her disappearance. She lived in Butte, Montana and frequently changed residences. She has three children and enjoys rock climbing. She had a restraining order against her former live-in boyfriend at the time she went missing, but he has not been named as a suspect in her disappearance. It is uncharacteristic of Christiansen to leave without warning. Her case remains unsolved.

Sister of missing Butte woman voices concerns with investigation

11/21/07

46-year-old Brandy Christiansen has been missing since November 2nd. Last week, police found her 1991 blue Toyota Tercel undisturbed on Delmoe Lake Road on Homestake Pass.

We spoke with Christiansen's Sister, Dana Mann, who is lives in Orting, Washington. She says she knew something was wrong when Christiansen did not show up to pick up her son on Saturday, November 3rd. Mann expressed her frustration with local authorities.

"At first it was a little hard to take because it just seemed like nothing was being done. It was like are you sure she didn't take off, it was a little hard to take. She would never leave here friends like that."

Mann says no one has heard from her sister since she was reported missing. KXLF News has learned that Judge Bob Lee issued a temporary restraining order against Christiansen's live-in boyfriend at the end of October.

The Restraining Order, in effect until December 17th, requires Richard Penhaligen to stay at least 1,500 feet away from Christiansen, her home, her car, and Montana Tech where she is a student. Judge Lee tells us he also ordered Christianson to vacate the home on Quartz Street, which she shared with Penhaligen. She was to be out of the house by the 8th of November.

The Order goes on to say that Penhaligen is being restrained because the Court feels Christiansen is in danger of immediate harm.

An affidavit attached to the order explains why Judge Lee felt there was such danger, but he says he is sealing that document, in order to protect Christiansen's privacy.

Friend worried about missing Butte woman

By The Standard Staff - 11/21/2007

Brandy Christiansens blue 1991 Toyota Tercel is seen in this Nov. 14, 2007 photo parked between Homestake and Delmoe lakes. Christiansen, of Butte, has been missing since Nov. 2.

A best friend of Brandy Christiansen, a Butte woman missing since Nov. 2, described Christiansen as very outgoing and says her disappearance raises red flags.

In the last 10 years Ive known her I probably never went more than three days without speaking to her. At this point, to go three weeks, its just not normal, Julie Davis told The Montana Standard in a telephone interview Tuesday night.

Davis, of Missoula, said Christiansen has got to be around people. She loves people. I just dont see her being out there by herself and not contacting anyone. Christiansen has three children a 16-year-old son who lives in Missoula with his father, and two older children who live on their own, Davis said.

She loves her son, and for her to go this long without contacting him, theres something wrong, Davis said.

Butte police are still trying to find Christiansen, but the case has produced few clues. Davis said she notified police of Christiansens disappearance.

Sheriff John Walsh said the department hasnt received any reliable tips.

We are following up on leads as best we can, but nobody has seen her since she went missing, Walsh said.

Christiansen was taking classes at Montana Tech, according to Walsh. The last time she was seen, Walsh said Christiansen was moving from one Butte residence and to another. Davis said Christiansen has no family in Butte. A younger sister lives in Washington state.

Davis said Christiansen delivered pizzas in Butte for awhile, and had lots of friends at the Chances R casino, one of her main hangouts. She traveled to Missoula quite often to see her son and Davis, Davis said.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 497-1120, or the Butte Crimestoppers at 782-7336.

Christiansen is describe as 5-feet, 1-inch tall, weighing 102 pounds, with blue eyes and short brown hair.

While Christiansen had moved around a lot, Davis said they always stayed in touch, and her recent disappearance has her worried.

A person just doesnt fall off the face of the earth, she said.

Search resumes for missing Butte woman

Posted: May 30, 2008 06:13 PM CDT

Updated: May 30, 2008 08:00 PM CDT

Now that the snow has melted on the Eastridge the search for a missing Butte woman resumed today.

For several hours today search and rescue personnel used search dogs to scour an area on East Delmo Lake Road close to Homestake Pass for clues to that may lead to Brandy Christiansen, 46.

Christiansen was reported missing early last November, then two weeks later her car was found near Homestake Pass. But the vehicle yielded no clues that could help locate Brandy.

Police are using dogs to help in their search, and they say the K-9's can pick up everything from Christiansen's scent to her clothes, shoes and other belongings.

Lieutenant Ed Lester: "These dogs are good at locating people that are missing so hopefully we can eliminate this area as a possible area to search and move onto some other areas of interest."

Police are urging you to call them if you have any information that could help in finding Brandy. Those numbers are 497-1120 or Crimestoppers at 782-7336.

Case still open on woman missing since November

By John Grant Emeigh - 08/08/2008

Almost 10 months since her daughter was reported missing, Dorothy Toti finds in hard to believe no one has seen her.

“My daughter is a very outgoing person, she knew everyone there,” Toti said.

Regard-less, Brandy Christiansen, 46, was last seen on Nov. 2, 2007, by friends in Butte. Since then, there’s been no confirmed sighting of her, telephone calls from her and no activity involving her bank account.

“She would not just disappear,” her mother told The Montana Standard in a phone interview from her Puyallup, Wash., Friday afternoon.

For Butte police, it seems Christiansen just vanished, because they haven’t been able to locate her.

Butte Sheriff John Walsh said the missing person case is still open, but his investigators have “exhausted” every lead they’ve had in the case.

“We’ve followed up on every lead, but unless we can get some new information the case is still open,” Walsh aid.

Investigators got their strongest lead on Nov. 14, when Christiansen’s 1991 Toyota Tercel was found abandoned on the road between Homestake Lake and Delmoe Lake, east of Butte. Police found no signs of foul play.

An initial search of the area was hampered by bad weather at that time. Conditions finally cleared in late May, and an extensive search was started. Dozens of searchers, along with a pair of search dogs, combed a wide area around where the woman’s car was found for two days. The effort turned up nothing.

Christiansen’s mother suspects her daughter could have met with foul play. She said Christiansen had a restraining order against her boyfriend at the time she ended up missing. She also was moving into her own place and taking classes at Montana Tech when she disappeared.

Her mother doesn’t believe Christiansen would just pack up and leave without telling anyone.

“She would have called and told me that she left and was living somewhere else,” Toti said.

The sheriff said he’s heard Toti’s concerns that Christiansen may have been the victim of a crime. Walsh said investigators have questioned people in her disappearance.

“We don’t discount anything, but we have to have proof — something to go on,” Walsh said.

There is no evidence to indicate if Christiansen is alive or dead, Walsh said.

Toti said her daughter was into rock climbing and was at first concerned she may be been involved in a climbing accident. However, the weather conditions where her car was found wouldn’t have been right for rock climbing.

Toti is asking anyone with information on her daughter to come forward.

“I want people to know my daughter was a good girl and she loved people,” Toti said.
