3 local people still missing
Investigations continue into disappearances
By John Grant Emeigh - 01/07/2009

It's been a frustrating past year for investigators in Butte and Anaconda who have been working to solve three missing person cases.

The whereabouts of two adult females and one adult male remain unknown as of the new year.

Investigators are still seeking information on what happened to Brandy Christiansen, 46, of Butte, Helen Gracia, 45, of Anaconda, and Matt Hatfield, 49, of Butte, all of whom just seemed to vanish without a trace.

Butte police have been working on finding Christiansen and Hatfield.

Christiansen was last seen on Nov. 2, 2007, by friends in Butte. Since then, there's been no confirmed sighting of her, telephone calls from her and no activity involving her bank account.

Police found her blue 1991 Toyota Tercel abandoned on the road between Homestake Lake and Delmoe Lake on Nov. 14. The car was parked along the side of the road and there appeared to be no signs of foul play. Investigators said there were no tire tracks from the car in the snow, indicating the vehicle may have been parked there for several days.

In May 2008, dozens of searchers, along with a pair of search dogs, combed a wide area around where the woman's car was found. The effort turned up nothing.

As for Matt Hatfield, his sister reported him missing to police Dec. 23, 2008, after she hadn't seen or heard from him in three weeks. Hatfield was last seen by family on Nov. 28 or Nov. 29, living at his mother's residence at 415 Roosevelt Dr., where he was caring for her, police reported.

Police also have had little luck with the Hatfield case. Investigators searched the property and one of two cabins located just off the main house at the Roosevelt Drive property for evidence the last week in December. Despite these efforts, there is still no sign of the missing man.

Hatfield is described as a white male about 5 feet, 11 inches tall and weighing 180 pounds.

Capt. Doug Conway said a photograph of Hatfield will likely be made public by police next week.

Conway said these cases are frustrating, because there is no indication of what happened to these people.

"We're treating both these cases as criminal investigations until we find out otherwise," Conway said.

In Anaconda, Police Chief John Sullivan describes his missing person case from last summer as frustrating.

Gracia went missing May 23, 2008. Initial reports said she was last seen at the Rock Inn, an Anaconda bar. Family members have said earlier that day she had gone to buy medications and groceries for her mom.

In early June, police found her car outside the Anaconda Bar, the medications and spoiled groceries inside. Investigators questioned a "person of interest" with whom Gracia was seen at the Rock Inn, and discovered that later the night of May 23 she was at Carmel's Bar.

Sullivan said poster of Gracia are posted around town and she is listed on the Web site www.helpfindthemissing.org.

In August, the missing woman's family offered $10,000 for information leading to her whereabouts or the arrest and conviction of those involved should her disappearance be the result of a crime.

Sullivan said the case remains open.

"Without any new information, the case gets tougher and tougher to investigate," Sullivan said.
