Teen still missing after a year

MYSTERY: The Moreno Valley girl disappeared last July, leaving no clues as to her whereabouts.

She didn't have a cell phone, car or driver's license.

She didn't have a boyfriend, health conditions or any problems with the law.

More than one year has passed since Kristine Nicole Hamilton, then 18, went missing from her Moreno Valley home, and her disappearance remains a mystery to her family and police.

"It looks like she disappeared without a trace," the girl's mother, Barbara Hamilton, said by phone.

Kristine was last seen at her family's Pala Foxia Place home on July 7, 2005. Her father, sleeping at the time, did not see her leave the house.

She took nothing with her, and there were no signs of foul play, Barbara said. It's not clear if she left alone or if someone picked Kristine up, she said.

It is out of character for Kristine to leave without telling her parents where she was going, her mother added.

"She was the type where, even if she was mad at me, she would call me," Barbara said.

Police have investigated the disappearance, but the case is still open, said Cpl. Dennis Gutierrez, spokesman for the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, by phone. Police have said they had entered her name and information into a California law enforcement database should any other police agencies encounter her.

The Hamilton family had moved from Illinois to California in 2004. Kristine had completed high school in Illinois, but she hadn't quite decided what she wanted to do next: She wasn't working, but she was considering taking some college courses, her mother said.

It is unlikely that Kristine would have moved back to Illinois or out on her own in California without telling her parents, and certainly not without taking her clothes and belongings, Barbara said.

"If she wanted to do that, she was the type of child who would just tell us," her mother said. "She was very forward."

Barbara, a Moreno Valley city employee, said she even ran a credit check on her daughter's Social Security number, but it turned up nothing.

Kristine spent most of her time hanging out with her friends or on the phone -- so much so that her parents took away her cell phone a while ago because she was racking up such a high monthly bill, Barbara said.

Yvette Allen, one of Kristine's friends, said they had made plans before she disappeared to go play pool at a friend's house. It was only when Allen, 22, called the Hamilton home that she found out that Kristine was missing the day they were to get together.

"If you made plans with her, she would always follow through," Allen said by phone. "If she couldn't, she would call. It's not like her to disappear."

Allen said she regularly checks with friends on the police force to see if there is any new information on the case. But they haven't seen or heard anything, she said.

Kristine depended on her friends or her mother to drive her around town. Although she had an Illinois driver's license, Kristine had lost it somewhere, Barbara said.

At 18, Kristine was legally an adult, but not in her mother's eyes.

"To me, she was still a child," Barbara said. "She had never done this before."

Kristine turned 19 in April. She is 5 feet, 6 inches tall with long, dark-brown hair and blue yes. She has a teal-colored star tattoo on her left shoulder and her initials, "KNH," on her right shoulder.

Anyone with information on Kristine's whereabouts should call the Moreno Valley Police Department at 951-486-6700 or Barbara Hamilton at 951-966-3180.
