-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Police searching for missing Davis woman Search area includes Sacramento, San Francisco, parts of Yolo Justin Malvin Posted: 4/5/06 Davis police are searching for a Davis woman known to be involved with the local homeless community, who is reported missing. Kathleen Crimmins is described in a police bulletin as Caucasian, 53 years old, 5 feet, 5 inches tall, weighing about 140 pounds, with hazel eyes and light brown hair. Police suspect she has stopped taking her medication. Police said Crimmins suffers from paranoia and schizophrenia. She was last seen wearing a black coat with a paint spot, jeans and a green baseball cap at Davis Community Church on the evening of Mar. 23. Steve Gerome-Wyatt, head of the Homeless, American Indians, Gays & Lesbians, and Students Party of Davis and middle California said though she is not homeless, Crimmins' disappearance has impacted the homeless community. "She is part of the homeless community so we were concerned," Gerome-Wyatt said. "We are concerned she may have wandered off or had been carried off or harmed in some way." Gerome-Wyatt said he first learned Crimmins was missing while attending a daily free-lunch event at St. Martin's Church when a middle-aged man showed him a picture and asked for information. Gerome-Wyatt said he quickly generated an alert bulletin of his own in which he accidentally misidentified Crimmins as "Kathy Higgins" and included an incorrect phone number for the Davis Police Department. "[The man] just seemed very concerned; I assumed he was a family member," Gerome-Wyatt said. "Our information was truly very sketchy, but we thought it would be a good idea to quickly pass along what we had." Both the police bulletin and the HAGS Party bulletin have been sent to numerous organizations in Northern California and no one has reported hearing from Crimmins. Detective Christopher King of the Davis Police Department said the search is difficult because it lacks a defined search area, noting that Crimmins could be in Davis, Sacramento or San Francisco. "It is very frustrating to go searching for someone without having an idea of where they could be," King said. "We have put out word to every law enforcement and medical facility you could think of in the area." King said Crimmins was under a court-ordered conservatorship program and that the missing persons report was filed by a caseworker from the Yolo County Public Guardian's office. Dick Narver, Yolo County assistant public guardian and administrator, said people under the conservatorship program live in a various secure or open facilities. He noted that the assignment depends on a person's self-reliance and possibility of running away. "Just because a person has a conservator doesn't mean they have to be locked up," Narver said. "If they decide to take off then it becomes a problem." Narver said it is routine for the public guardian's office to contact the police in the event of a missing person under the program and that people are typically located quickly. King said the police are doing all they can to locate Crimmins and that finding her depends on either someone contacting her or her calling in and asking for help. "It is very frustrating to know there is somebody out there that needs help, but not be able to contact them," King said. "All we can do is put out as much information as possible and hope someone contacts her."
