Possible Break in Starkey Search
Written by Tim Daly, Reporter

It appears human remains found Wednesday in Amador County are likely connected to the case of missing San Joaquin County woman Mary Starkey.

On Wednesday, the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office announced human remains had been found in Amador County. That announcement came after investigators had traveled to the Fiddletown area while investigating the possible location of a murder victim. A spokesman said it was likely those remains would be identified Thursday.

However, the sheriff's office said it is unable to offer any other comments because of a gag order in the case.

The gag order cited matched the date of a gag order issued in Starkey's case and was issued by the same judge.

Currently, there are only two other gag orders in effect over cases in San Joaquin County, including the Larry McNabney-Sarah Dutra murder case. The body in that case has already been found.

Mary Starkey of the Ripon area disappeared in June 2005 while meeting a man over the possible sale of her boat. She was never seen again. A couple weeks later, investigators arrested Roy Smith of Manteca. He'd been videotaped driving Starkey's car after her disappearance.
