Police reopen cold case Lakeland, Florida - Lakeland police have decided to re-open a 17 year old case. Janice Norat disappeared in June of 1990 and police initially treated their investigation as a missing persons report. However, police now believe Norat may have been the victim of foul play. They base it on new DNA evidence and new interviews done in the case. Norat’s daughter, Carla, believes satanic worship may also have played a part in her mother’s disappearance. Norat told police she never saw her mother dress in robes or perform rituals, but says there were plenty of pentagrams around her home. http://www.tampabays10.com/news/local/arti...x?storyid=57167 |

http://www.theledger.com/article/20090825/...r-Stops-in-Polk Cold Case Tour Stops in Polk ERNST PETERS | THE LEDGER Buy photo Members of local law enforcement and Missing Children International Ministries release a balloon Tuesday to bring awareness to the many cases of missing people outside Lakeland Police Department. By Jeremy Maready THE LEDGER Published: Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at 11:04 p.m. Last Modified: Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at 11:04 p.m. LAKELAND | The sixth annual Missing Person's Tour made a stop in Lakeland on Tuesday to raise awareness and offer help to law enforcement. The tour, founded by Monica Caison, travels around the country to generate new interest in cold cases of missing people. So far, the tour has made 23 stops this year and traveled 4,810 miles to inform the public about 104 cold cases. Caison said on average, her North Carolina-based organization CUE Center for Missing Persons helps solve at least one missing person case a year. In 2008, that happened in St. Petersburg, she said. "We know the tour works, and we believe in it." While in Lakeland, Caison wanted to raise awareness about Leah Jean Van Schoick, a 17-year-old Pembroke Pines girl who was last seen in Plantation on Aug. 15, 1982. "It has been a long road," said Van Schoick's sister, Teddi Fix of Lakeland. "It's been devastating to us. Sometimes we feel like giving up." But knowing there is renewed interest in the case gives her some hope. During the afternoon meeting Tuesday at the Lakeland Police Department, local detectives also announced renewed interest in the case of Janice Elizabeth Norat. Norat, who was 32 at the time, disappeared June 19, 1990, when she left her job as a landscaper at Merchants Walk, off South Florida Avenue in Lakeland. The circumstances of the case are suspicious, investigators said. Norat had told her boss that she needed to take her daughter to a doctor's appointment that day. But her daughter was never picked up. Her car was later found, cleaned up, in the Albertson's parking lot. Investigators hope new information will lead them to some closure in the nearly 20-year-old case. [ Jeremy Maready can be reached at jeremy.maready@theledger.com or 863-802-7592. ] |
