Pamela June Ray

Above Images: Ray, circa 1992

Vital Statistics at Time of Disappearance

Missing Since: August 12, 1992 from Panama City, Florida
Classification: Endangered Missing
Date Of Birth: October 3, 1955
Age: 36 years old
Height and Weight: 5'3, 110 pounds
Distinguishing Characteristics: Brown hair, brown eyes. Ray's maiden name is Bennett. She has a scar on her head.

Details of Disappearance

Ray drove from her residence in Atlanta, Georgia to Panama City, Florida during the early morning hours of August 12, 1992. She was accompanied by her two young children at the time. Ray was not able to locate a vacant motel room in Panama City upon their arrival at approximately 3:30 a.m. She parked her vehicle in the parking lot of the former Wilhite Apartments complex on Front Beach Road for the remainder of the night. (The complex is now called Parsons Place). Ray was spotted by seven witnesses at the complex, including two police officers. She locked her car and left her children asleep in the back seat at approximately 5:30 a.m. Ray also left her purse and keys behind in the vehicle. She walked from the apartment lobby to the swimming pool area at that time and was apparently followed by an unidentified Caucasian male. The same man had been seen earlier in the morning as he urinated in public in Panama City. Witnesses heard a female screaming for help from the vicinity of the pool at the same time Ray walked towards the area. She has never been seen again.
There have been numerous tips and leads in Ray's case, but none have produced any evidence as to her whereabouts. One of the police officers who saw her on the night she vanished underwent hypnosis shortly afterwards. He described the unidentified man who followed Ray as having fair-colored hair and eyes. The suspect stood approximately 6'0 and weighed 150 pounds. He wore a shirt with alternating dark and light-colored horizontal stripes. A man resembling the officer's description was arrested for kidnapping and sexually assaulting a woman from Chipley, Florida in March 1992 shortly after the hypnosis session. The attack took place five months prior to Ray's disappearance. Charges against the suspect were eventually dropped due to conflicting descriptions given by the victim. He has never been connected to Ray's disappearance, but authorities searched the area where the woman had been attacked for evidence regarding Ray's case. Nothing was uncovered.

On a side note, a bank clerk in Georgia mistakenly wired approximately $400,000 into Ray's father's account in 1989. Ray was allegedly one of the family members who helped her father spend the money. Ray's father pleaded guilty to theft of mislaid property in 1991. He repaid the majority of the cash, but prosecutors were frustrated with the lack of payment progress. Other family members, including Ray and her husband, were indicted in 1992 and released on bond. The family reportedly purchased a condominium at the Gulf Highlands Beach Resort in Panama City under Ray's name. Investigators do not believe that the financial problems were connected to Ray's disappearance.

Possible new leads developed in Ray's case in 2000. Authorities did not elaborate on the circumstances, but her case remains open and unsolved. Foul play is suspected in Ray's disappearance.

Pamela Ray Missing For 17 Years

A | A | A Wednesday marks the 17th anniversary of the disappearance of a Georgia resident in Panama City Beach. It was August 12, 1992 that Pam Ray pulled into the Wilhite Motel on Front Beach Road at 5:30 in the morning and then simply vanished.

Despite being featured on various television shows including "Unsolved Mysteries," clues and leads in the case have been minimal. However, Major David Humphreys of beach police says the case is still open and at the forefront of the cold case files.

“We continue to go back to that case. We continue to look at it with fresh eyes every few years and let a new person take a look at it."

Dring their investigation, police searched an area of woods near Defuniak Springs in 2000 after a convicted murderer named Mark Reibi confessed to the killing. The search turned up nothing and Reibi later recanted.

Though 17 years have passed, Major Humphreys says many of the officers that were a part of this investigation are not ready to give up hope.

"There are several of us who have been around for a long time and you know we would really love to solve this case while we are still here."

This week marks the 17th-anniversary of one of the most mysterious missing person cases ever to take place in northwest Florida.

In August 1992, 35-year-old Pamela Ray left her two sleeping children inside the family car to get a motel room on Panama City Beach.

She has never been seen or heard from again.

One witness said she was talking to a man in the motel parking lot and he later heard a scream from the beach.

The case of the missing Atlanta woman has been the subject of several network television programs over the years.

However all the leads have failed to reveal any evidence of what happened to Ray

Date: August 14, 1992 Publication: The Atlanta Journal and The Atlanta Constitution Page Number: D/2 Word Count: 598

Police in Panama City Beach, Fla., were searching Thursday for a sandy-haired "beach bum" with a pet ferret in the abduction of a Villa Rica woman who brought her children to the Gulf Coast for a pre-school vacation.

Pamela J. Ray, 36, was last seen at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, walking away from her car with a man in front of a beach motel, said Sgt. Roland Peak. Shortly thereafter, guests at the motel told police, they heard a woman screaming for help.

Need Help?
Panama City Beach- Was she kidnapped, murdered, or did she simply run away? 20 years following her mysterious disappearance in Panama City Beach the question remains- what happened to Pamela Ray?

"Unfortunately it keeps coming back to one thing, we don't know," said Panama City Beach Police Captain Robert Clarkson.

The Georgia resident and her two kids were about to start a vacation, pulling into the old Wilhite Motel on Front Beach Road. They would get there before the sun rose, around 5:30 a.m., when on that fateful day of August 12, 1992 Ray vanished.

"At least one witness did indicate during the 5:00 time frame, he thought he heard a woman scream indicating she needed help. However he didn't feel the need to contact the police department," said Clarkson.

Hours later a police officer on patrol happened to notice her children sleeping in the family's car. Ray was nowhere to be found.

"All they could really say is mom was trying to get into the hotel room. They didn't have any information whatsoever as to what happened to her," said Clarkson.

Besides her children unable to help, initial investigations were that much more difficult given the lack of physical proof.

"There wasn't a lot of forensic evidence collected back then, so it's not like we have some sort of DNA," said Clarkson.

Pamela Ray's story has garnered national attention thoughout the years, featured on television shows including NBC's "Unsolved Mysteries." Among the countless possibilities as to what happened to her, two scenarios remain at the forefront.

"The family had been indicted on some bank fraud charges," said Clarkson.

Or was she murdered?

"That's really been the only break that we have had," said Clarkson.

Serving life in prison for a separate murder, Mark Riebe is still the only person of interest in the case.

"He professes he's a self-proclaimed mass murderer of women. Nothing he's given us to date with Pamela Ray have we been able to prove," said Clarkson.

With so many questions and so few answers, investigators continue to rely on the public for help in cracking this unsolved mystery.

"That little piece that you might not thought was a big deal 20 years ago, today could be key that we need to solve the case," said Clarkson.

If you think you know any information relating to the disappearance of Georgia resident Pamela Ray you can call the Panama City Beach Police Department at (850) 233-5010.
