'Credible' Tip Sparks Search For Woman Who Mysteriously Vanished

POSTED: 12:47 pm EDT August 22, 2007
UPDATED: 11:41 pm EDT August 22, 2007

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- A tip described by police as credible prompted a massive dig in an Orange County yard Wednesday in hopes of finding the remains of a woman who mysteriously vanished 15 years ago.

Heavy machinery was used to search for the remains of Sandy Schlamann, 21, at a home on 16th Avenue near County Road 13 in Bithlo.

After hours of digging, police said nothing was found. However, they said the Schlamann's remains still might be in the area.

"This was the most promising (lead)," Orange County sheriff's Sgt. Allen Lee said. "It puts us in this area, and we are still going to concentrate in areas around here. We've got information coming in. We know there is other information out there that people are holding on to."

Schlamann disappeared March 15, 1994.

Police said they believe a domestic situation with her boyfriend possibly led to her disappearance. However, no one has been charged in the case.

The current homeowner of the property was not the same owner who lived there when the woman vanished.

Anyone with information concerning the crime is urged to call Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS.

Yard Dug Up After New Tip In Old Missing Person

POSTED: 5:24 pm EDT August 22, 2007
UPDATED: 5:46 pm EDT August 22, 2007

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- A new tip in an old cold case of a missing young woman led investigators to dig up an east Orange County yard to look for evidence. Sandy Schlamann, 21, disappeared 13 years ago and is believed to have been murdered.

Investigators spent two days digging in what is now Robert Gregory's yard after getting a tip that they might find Schlamann's body. The dogs did pick up a scent and Wednesday investigators said they believe that her body was there and then moved.

By many accounts, Schlamann lived a sad life. There are reports she was abused as a child and then, as a teenager and adult, looked for escape in a high-risk lifestyle. That could've ended in a Bithlo backyard on March 15, 1994.

Investigators brought in a back-hoe to look for the missing woman and focused the digging on a spot where concrete had been haphazardly poured, possibly to cover up her first grave.

Even though they didn't find anything, they think they're closer than they've ever been.

"This was the most promising. It puts us in the area and we are still going to concentrate on areas around here," explained homicide detective Sgt. Allen Lee.

Investigators said the person who owned the house back then is not necessarily a prime suspect. They believe someone she knew well is involved, possibly a boyfriend.

Schlamann had the home's address on her driver's license and spent quite a bit of time there, but did not live there when she disappeared. Investigators said they're trying to give Schlamann's family closure and catch whoever is responsible.

"It's our belief that someone out here knows what happened to this victim," Lee said.

Investigators said they don't expect a happy ending. The latest tip came in to Crimeline and investigators are hoping the public provides more information.
