http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/l/lugo_katheryne.html Katheryne M. Lugo Left and Center: Lugo, circa 1994; Right: Age-progression at age 16 (circa 2005) Vital Statistics at Time of Disappearance Missing Since: January 8, 1994 from Riviera Beach, Florida Classification: Non-Family Abduction Date Of Birth: March 6, 1989 Age: 4 years old Height and Weight: 3'0, 65 pounds Distinguishing Characteristics: Hispanic female. Brown hair, brown eyes. Lugo has a nickel-sized brown birthmark on the right hamstring of her leg. She has pierced ears. Some agencies may spell her first name "Katherine." Clothing/Jewelry Description: A purple and white t-shirt imprinted with the television dinosaur Barney, and underpants. Details of Disappearance Lugo's mother, Frances Moya, sometimes referred to as Francisca Maya, told authorities she last saw Lugo at approximately 5:30 a.m. on January 8, 1994 at their residence at the Wood's Edge apartment complex on Military Trail north of Blue Heron Boulevard in Riviera Beach, Florida. Moya departed for work at that time and left Lugo in the care of Moya's former live-in boyfriend, Misbah Kazi. Kazi is not Lugo's biological father. Moya stated that when she returned home later in the day, Kazi informed her that he had sent Lugo to Bangladesh. Kazi claimed that he would not allow Lugo to return to the United States until Moya agreed to give him full custody of their unborn child. Moya was eight months pregnant with a daughter in January 1994 and was planning to end her relationship with Kazi. Authorities believe that Kazi abducted Lugo in an attempt to force her mother to give up her rights to her unborn baby. Kazi stated that Moya had sent Lugo away into hiding in a spiteful attempt to frame him for kidnapping the child. He was charged with Lugo's kidnapping, but was acquitted during his trial. He remains the prime suspect in Lugo's case. Kazi began harrassing Moya by telephone after his trial ended, insinuating that he would reveal Lugo's whereabouts. He never divulged the child's location. Moya believes Kazi's sister, who lived in the United States in 1994 but was later deported, may have been involved in Lugo's abduction. The sister has never been charged in Lugo's case. She was one of the witnesses against him at his kidnapping trial, but recanted her statement that she had last seen Lugo in the company of Kazi. Moya now lives in New York. She continues to hope Lugo will someday be returned to her. Kazi is currently serving a life sentence in a California prison for attempted murder. He was convicted after beating his pregnant fiancee with a hammer in 1995 and leaving her for dead. Authorities stated that Kazi purchased a $300,000 life insurance policy on the woman and intended to kill her in order to receive the settlement. Though he has been offered several deals by prosecutors, Kazi has continued to refuse to cooperate with investigators regarding Lugo's case, which remains open and unsolved. Lugo has never been seen again. Taken From Home This age-enhanced photo was created to help find Katheryne. On Saturday January 8, 1994, Katheryne Lugo was abducted from her mother's home in Riviera Beach, Florida. At 5:30am on January 8 Katheryne's mother, Frances Moya, checked on Katheryne before she left for work. Moya planned to have her boyfriend, Misbah Kazi, babysit four-year-old Katheryne while she was at work. When Moya returned home her daughter was gone. "I sent her to Bangladesh and she's not coming home until I have my baby." To Bangladesh? Kazi and Moya had been having familial disagreements... Moya was eight months pregnant and Kazi wanted full custody of her unborn child. When Moya discovered that Katheryne was missing, Kazi told her, "I sent her to Bangladesh and she's not coming home until I have my baby." Cops Wonder: Where Did Kazi Take Katheryne? Investigators questioned Moya and Kazi for hours about Katheryne's disappearance. They were convinced Kazi took Katheryne... they charged him with abduction. But at trial, Kazi was aquitted. On the witness stand his sister recanted statements that she last saw Katheryne with Kazi. Kazi never revealed Katheryne's location. On December 2, 1995 Kazi was arrested in California for attempted murder. He was sentenced to life in prison. Katheryne would be 16 now. She is a Hispanic female with brown hair and brown eyes. Forensic experts created an age-enhanced photo of Katheryne -- hoping that she is alive and well somewhere and that someone may recognize her. http://www.amw.com/missing_children/case.cfm?id=34024 |

http://www.palmbeachpost.com/localnews/con...8/0108lugo.html Case still unsolved for girl who went missing from Riviera Beach apartment Click-2-Listen By JASON SCHULTZ Palm Beach Post Staff Writer Thursday, January 08, 2009 It was 15 years ago today that a young mother, Francis Moya, went off to work and left her 4-year-old daughter with her boyfriend at the couple's Riviera Beach apartment. It was 5 a.m., and it would be the last time Moya - or anyone else - would see Katheryne Lugo. Post your comments on this story below More local news Latest breaking news, photos and all of today's Post stories. On the beat, behind the agenda: Post reporters cover your area in City Pulse. Share This Story Y Buzzdel.icio.us diggNewsvine redditTechnorati FacebookTwitter FarkMore What are these? "It is horrible because you always try to stay positive that someday she will come home, but then reality sets in that it has been 15 years," said a tearful Moya, reflecting on how Katheryne would be 19 years old today. Moya has since moved out of Florida and declined to say where she lives. The man whom police suspected was responsible for Katheryne's disappearance, Moya's then-boyfriend Misbah Kazi, is in a California prison sentenced to life for trying to kill a woman in San Jose. Kazi was the last person with whom Katheryne was seen, and after the disappearance police accused him of kidnapping Katheryne, who is not his child, in order to force Moya to give him custody of their other child, Brenda. A Palm Beach County jury acquitted Kazi of the kidnapping charges in 1994. Investigators have since talked to Kazi in California and offered to try to reduce his sentence if he cooperated with detectives, but he has not, Riviera Beach Police Sgt. Pat Galligan said. The case has received national attention over the past 15 years. It was aired on the television show America's Most Wanted, and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children sent out postcards all over the country with Lugo's picture. Nancy McBride, director of the Florida chapter of the center, based in Lake Park, said, "I still believe there is somebody out there that knows where she is." Riviera Beach police and the Federal Bureau of Investigations have made little headway since Katheryne vanished, but Galligan, one of the original detectives, said he never stops thinking about what happened to the girl. "If I retire in a couple of years, it will be the only case where I feel like I've never had closure on it," he said. Galligan said he has not had an active lead her disappearance in about five years. Anyone with information about Lugo's whereabouts can call the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children hotline at 1-800-THE-LOST or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-458-TIPS. |
