Kerhonkson teen missing for 10 years
By Kathryn Gill, Freeman staff
03/25/2006

KERHONKSON - Five-year-old Haleigh Belmont hopes to meet her Uncle Joe someday.

"Haleigh saw Joe's picture at Troy's Deli and Pizzeria and said, 'I miss him and love him. Will I ever get to see him?'" said Cathaleen Martin Lightstone. "I told her 'Maybe, one day.'"

Lightstone is Haleigh's grandmother and the mother of Joseph Patrick Martin, who disappeared without a trace 10 years ago today.

There have been no solid leads in the case, but Lightstone holds out hope that her son will return - and she said she continues to live in the house on Samsonville Road in Kerhonkson where Martin grew up so he will know where to find her.

But Lighthouse knows she may never see her son again.

"Everyone says it must be getting easier as time goes by, but it just gets harder, because chances are slimmer and slimmer he will be found," she said.

Martin, who was 15 years old at the time, left his house the evening of March 25, 1996, en route to meet some friends a short distance away for a night of comet watching. But he never hooked up with the group and never came home.

Lightstone still puzzles over the circumstances surrounding her son's disappearance.

"The place he was going to was only three-quarters of a mile down the road," she says, "and Joe was a track runner."

Investigators say the case is at a standstill but remains open, and Lightstone gives police credit for checking any tips they receive in the case, though none has panned out.

State police Senior Investigator Stan O'Dell said the case still is "certainly a high priority."

Lightstone said spring is always difficult because she fears hikers may find her son's remains after the snow melts.

Lightstone said she is thankful for the support of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which sends her a letter each month. The center also continues to distribute posters of Martin, which include a description of him as well as a computer-generated photo of what he might look like today. And this year's long-form Internal Revenue Service booklet for income tax returns also contains Martin's photo, Lightstone said.

Given the amount of time that Martin has been missing, Lightstone could have gone to court and had him declared legally dead, but she isn't ready to do that.

"We keep looking for him," she said.

The recent birth of another granddaughter, Jessie Martin, reminds Lightstone of her son even more.

"Jessie looks exactly like Joe as a baby," she said, "It weird. It feels like he's back sometimes."

At the time of his disappearance, Joseph Martin was 5-foot-2 and weighed 115 pounds with a slim but muscular build. His head was shaved except for a blond ponytail. He had green eyes and two piercings in his left ear. Anyone with information about the case should call state police at (845) 626-2800.

Jailed man claims involvement in 2 old cases
September 14, 2006

Kingston —- A Kingston man in his 50s has confessed involvement in two decade-old missing persons cases. The man is currently in Ulster County Jail on other charges, police said.
The man's name has not been released and police would not say which local missing persons cases the man claims involvement in. Police also would not say whether the man was jailed on violent charges or a drug-related offense.

"The man said he had some involvement. We want to do this carefully through a thorough follow-up on these leads," Detective Lt. Ron Dreiser of the Ulster County Sheriff's Office said.

Unsolved missing persons cases in the Ulster County area more than a decade old include the disappearance of a young mother with multiple sclerosis, Laura Smith Williams, of Connelly in 1994, teen Joseph Patrick Martin, of Accord, in 1996, and Cindy Loretta Rowles, of Kingston, in 1986.

There are lso two unidentified bodies. One was of a middle aged man found alongside a highway in Saugerties in 1970 and the body of a middle aged woman found off Lucas Avenue in Accord in 1985.

"I can say that the cases involved were not those of the two unidentified bodies, since remains have not been found," District Attorney Don Williams said.
