INVESTIGATION IN MISSING KOSSE CHILD CONTINUES; LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS MEET TO POOL INFORMATION. The investigation into the case of a missing Kosse two-year-old, Desiree Carroll, continues. Last Thursday, March 31, law enforcement officers, who have been involved in the case, met in Limestone County Courthouse to pool their information. The meeting was called at the request of Limestone County Sheriff Dennis Walker. In addition to Walker, others attending were Limestone Deputies Sgt. Dennis Wilson, Lee Turrubiarte and Jack Avirett, Game Warden Gaylan Alewine, Falls County Sheriff Larry Pamplin, and Deputy John Semeko, Falls County Constable Jimmy Mitchell, Sgt. Bob Prince of Company "F" of the Texas Rangers and Texas Ranger Jimmy Ray. The officers discussed many detailed bits of information and also made various observations about the persons involved---- namely Ann Elizabeth Densman Carroll, mother of the missing child, and David Morris, with whom Mrs. Carroll and her daughters, Desiree and Heather, were living. The officers discussed the peculiar religious beliefs on the part of Morris. Also was discussed the lack of emotion shown by the missing girl's mother and Morris. It was also noted by other members of Morris' family that arrived on the scene after the little girl had disappeared. Morris, Mrs. Carroll and their party left the house near Kosse last week to go supposedly to a motel near Waco to get away from what they termed as harassment from the volunteer searchers. As stated previously, many different pieces of information were discussed by the officers. A more detailed report of this very interesting meeting will be carried in The Journal next week. However, at the end of the two and a half hour meeting, Sheriff Walker said that the possibilities which are being explored are: 1. That their story is true, the child wandered off. 2.That the child was accidentally killed while being disciplined by Morris as the information gathered indicated that he disciplined the two girls a good bit. 3. That the little girl was given away. 4. That the little girl was sold for monetary value. Walker stressed that those possibilities are not being explored necessarily in the order listed. Most immediate action contemplated by officers was interrogation of Heather Carroll, under hypnosis which Constable Mitchell said he believed he could arrange with the father, Reggie Carroll. Carroll was to have picked up Heather from her mother on Thursday night of last week at a place in Waco. Based on evidence surfaced in the meeting, County attorney Pat Simmons issued a search warrant permitting officers to enter the house near Kosse. It was pointed out during the meeting that even though the officers had been in the house they had not really searched it. |

SEARCH CONTINUES TWO-YEAR-OLD KOSSE GIRL As the Journal reached news deadline, no word had been recieved as to the where-abouts of a two-year-old Kosse girl who disappeared from her home, near Kosse about 1 p.m. on last Friday. Hundreds of officers and volunteers from throughout the weekend searched for the little girl. Members of law enforcement agencies from Limestone, Leon and Falls Counties participated in the search. Also personnel from the National Guard Units in Mexia and Marlin and the Department of Public Safety joined in the huge search. The search effort was somewhat hampered by a heavy rain on Saturday night. According to various media reports, officers are investigating the possibility of foul play. The search area, known as "The Big Woods", a few miles southwest of Kosse and south of Highway 7 is described as dense with youpon and other brush amidst the thick trees. The child, Desiree Carroll, who would have been three in July, was residing at the David Morris house with her mother, Ann Elizabeth Carroll and an older sister Heather, who is five. The mother told officers she dropped the two children off at the lane leading to the residence about 1 p.m. as she proceeded to Marlin. Heather, the 5-year-old, walked toward the house, while Desiree followed the pickup she was driving, she said. The general supposition was that the child wandered into the woods. Morris is said to be living at the house and caring for the place, which is a family estate. Mrs. Carroll and the children had been living with him for about 10 days, according to neighbors. The child's father, Reggie Carrolll of Houston, arrived at the scene, about 2 a.m. Saturday. He said he and Mrs. Carroll had been divorced for about two years. |

Texas Ranger, Sheriff work on Kosse ‘Cold Case’ By Bob Wright-Editor Texas Ranger Matt Cawthon, a longtime veteran in law enforcement, briefly reviewed some history of the state agency during a speaking engagement before the Mexia Lions Club. A member of Ranger Company F, Cawthon is no stranger to Limestone County. He has been called upon for his expertise on several cases, including the first one he worked on in this county - the murder of Mexia Police Officer Ricky Ward. His work, along with that of Limestone County law enforcement agencies, resulted in a life sentence for the murderer - not eligible for parole until 30 years served. Sheriff Dennis Wilson introduced Cawthon. Don Corbitt was program chairman. Cawthon is currently assisting Limestone County after digging out a couple of the county’s Cold Cases. One regards the disappearance of a two and a half-year old Kosse girl, who today would be about 26. The girl is Desiree Carroll, who disappeared without a trace in 1985. A computerized age-progression has been made available to law enforcement agencies, showing what Desiree might look like today. “We thought we had located her once, but the lady we saw was not Desiree,” Cawthon explained. However, officers believe that she is still alive. The other case being worked on is believed to be drug-related, although no body has been found. The man was said to have been buried in some pasture, but right now it’s akin to searching for that proverbial “needle in a haystack.” Withoujt divulging too much about either case, Ranger Cawthon did allude to clues’ being checked out. Matt, stationed with the Rangers in Waco, has served for 26 years with the Department of Public Safety (DPS), and has been a Ranger for 16 years. In 1982 he bagan a seven-year career with the Texas Highway Patrol, while being in the DPS for 26. Right now, Matt Cawthon has been in the Rangers/DPS Criminal Intelligence Division for quite awhile. The Rangers were born out of a need to keep down lawlessness during frontier days of the Lone Star State. The special units were formed in 1823 when 20 members were commissioned. There are currently 135 Texas Rangers. Cawthon said the Texas Rangers’ work “has been very rewarding.” As a case in point, Cawthon related the availability of DNA as evidence, highly praising this phase of law enforcement. He told about a case in 1993 when a girl was kidnapped and sexually assaulted. The girl was released in this instance, at the age of eight. Technology was not available at the time, technology which might have earlier tracked down the perpetrator. Some seven years later, DNA made the scene bigtime. The girl was nearly 20 at the time when the perpetrator was caught. Cawthon, in answer to an audience question, said he worked on the Kenneth McDuff case “toward the last,” and explained that McDuff showed them where he and Hank Worley buried the body of Colleen Reed, an Austin woman kidnapped from a carwash, then brought back into Central Texas, where she was tortured, sexually assaulted numerous times, then murdered. McDuff, later put to death, was described by Ranger Cawthon as a “psycho sadistic type of killer, with no remorse for what he did over the years.” http://www.mexiadailynews.com/local/local_..._140112224.html |
